I was very disappointed by this book, and I think this is one of those rare instances where the movie will actually be better than the book.

By now, I'm sure everyone knows the story - and since there's a movie, there's no room for ending spoils, which is why I'll go into detail about what I didn't like.

I can not say enough good things about this book. In my honest opinion I think it should be required reading for any couple going through premarital counseling. After completing this easy read I honestly wanted nothing more than to hug their necks and tell them Thank You for sharing such a courageous story of their infinite faith and devotion to each other and to God.

This is our March book club book. After seeing the movie, I was very intrigued to read this book. It's a quick read. I really enjoyed hearing about how their faith helped them through this trail. It's a great reminder that God is there for all of us. If you're reading this book because you enjoyed the movie and want more of it, you'll be a bit shocked or confused when you read this. The movie is cute and Channing Tatum is a lot of fun to look at, but the love story in the movie completely leaves out the reason why they decided to keep their vows in such a terrible situation: they loved God and wanted to honor the commitment they made to him. Very, very inspirational book. It's amazing how the prayers were answered from God.
"Krickitt's soul can't be affected by any injury because it's immortal. Her faith will always be there. It's there now. We've seen it. God has preserved her for some great purpose, and her faith is there to carry through." The ending paragraph of this book really hit me, I love this book. I can't wait to see the movie, I hope it's very inspirational like the book.

I don't read non-fiction, but I picked this book up thinking it would be better than the movie. Wrong. And I want to apologize in advance to the Carpenters as this won't be a five star review. I couldn't decide whether I should review this or not, because it's a true story, and I don't want to offend anyone. But I've checked the amazon reviews and my thoughts seem to be on par with a lot of people's.

The Carpenters are in a car wreck the day before Thanksgiving which leaves Krickitt in a coma. The movie opens up here. The book starts a year and a half earlier. The problem is this is the inciting incident. I know it's non-fiction, but I've read memoirs need to be as compelling as a novel. The story starts here. Another difference is that the movie moves pretty quickly from the car accident to her trying to rebuild her life. The book spends way too long on the details of her hospitalization and recovery.

The thing that surprised me is even though this is a memoir and the movie is fiction, I found the movie more believable in many aspects than the book. The couple were basically pen-pals for the first year of their relationship. They met in person 2 months before they got married and were only married 10 weeks before the accident. It then took a year and a half after the accident for them to rebuild any sort of relationship worth having. I know it's true, and I don't doubt it did happen, but there wasn't enough relationship building in the book to make me believe it as I read it. A couple of other things bothered me about the book. For example, I found the characters in the movie easier to relate to. Now, it's true an over-achiever who finally drops out of law school to do something artsy and takes crap from the whole family for it hits close to home for me, but I just felt the characters in the movie were more well rounded. (I'm not in any way implying that the Carpenters are not well-rounded individuals, just that you don't get that from the book).

Part of the reason I chose this book was because I caught part of an interview with the couple where they said they liked the movie but wish it paid more attention to the role their faith played in staying married. I find lots of expectations when writing and lots of things available for reading to be anti-faith. I thought I'd give this a try. I think the fundamental problem is that it's too much the other way. Rather than building characters (which should be easy to do--the writer knows these people) and building relationships, the writer spends the majority of every page in excerpts from prayer journals. If he really felt it was necessary one or two excerpts for examples would have been fine, but this book reads more like a list of events squeezed between prayers than a story. And I don't know that the overtness makes God's role more apparent to the story. If you're going to have massive head trauma and memory loss, Krickitt Carpenter's situation is the ideal way to do it. They had lots of really supportive family and friends. Her family wanted them to stay together had they taken advantage of her memory loss the way Paige's family in the movie did, I'm not sure this couple would have made it. In spite of having a family that wanted to get rid of her husband and not being able to remember who he was Paige still ended up where she was supposed to be. When she dropped out of law school the second time for the same reason. I just thought "Wow, you always end up where you're supposed to be. All roads lead to the same place." If I didn't believe in God I'd have to call it fate. Then she ends up with her husband again. I actually found that more amazing than being able to stay together with lots of encouragement and support. And it's kind of reflective of life too. We make bad or dumb decisions from time to time. It's called being human, but years later when I look back on it, I often find that had I gone another route I'd still end up where I am today.

In the beginning of the story, I found this book very, very boring. Once Krickitt got to the rehab center, things got interesting and I enjoyed this part the most. I loved how she still was connected to God through her journal even after forgetting a lot of other things. Also, she sounded normal in her journal, but not while speaking to Kim.

It is not often that I see the movie before I've read the book but this was the case with, "The Vow." I have to say I enjoyed reading this book but I can see for many it may be a disappointment compared to the movie. The book is completely different to the movie and there is a lot of religious underground/ references in the book which some people may find uncomfortable. My Review:

As per my rule, I read the book first and then saw the movie. The book follows Kim on his spiritual journey as he struggles to rebuild a relationship his wife can't remember. After talking to Krickett on the phone, Kim is drawn to this woman and soon realizes she is the one God has chosen for him. After barely two months of marriage, an accident erases Krickett's memory of ever even meeting Kim--much less marrying him. As a successfull baseball coach, Kim uses his skills to coach his wife into daily life, but he soon learns that's not what made her fall in love with him. As Kim struggles with his marriage, his bills, his career, and his faith, readers will cheer for him to succeed--wowed, as I was, by his never ending commitment to his marriage.

The movie version was loosely based on Kim and Krickett's experience but several things were different. Hollywood changed the characters' names (Paige and Leo in the movie), professions (Leo is a music producer and Paige is an artist), and the years in which the events ocurred (events happened in 90's, movie is in present day). Sadly, Hollywood also took God out of the story - in real life Kim and Krickett relied on their faith and prayer during their difficult times; whereas, this was left out of the movie. However, both stories are wonderful celebrations of a love that triumphs over seemingly impossible circumstances. Additionally, both women had something inside of them that even a major brain trauma could not erase - with Krickett it was her faith and with Paige it was her art. I thought this message was beautifully portrayed in both. Also the message that no matter what happens, we all end up where we belong resounded in both the book and the movie. Read the book, see the movie, enjoy both!

Their 15 minute phone calls turned into 4 hour long phone calls. They finally decided to meet in person. Kim paid to have Krickett flown out to New Mexico for a small trip. They really had fallen for each other. It wasn’t long before Kim proposed and Krickett moved out to New Mexico to be with Kim. She took on a new job there and everything was perfect. They got married and were the happiest they could’ve been in their entire lives. About a month after they got married Thanksgiving rolled around. They wouldn’t let Kim go with her she he had to get his dad to come sign him out of the hospital even though his injuries were very severe and they urged him not to leave. As soon as he got to her hospital he was admitted as well. He just wanted to see his wife. When he saw her she was all hooked up to machines it was a horrible sight for Kim. They didn’t think Krickett would make it. One of the things that Krickett and Kim had in common was that they are extremely strong in their faith. The only thing they could do at this time was pray. Krickett made an astonishing recovery after many surgeries. The accident had a horrible long term effect though. She could not remember the last couple years of her life. She remembered things from a very very long time ago. But she had no memory of ever falling in love with Kimmer. It nearly broke his heart. But low and behold he was there with her everyday. Through everyday in rehab, he was there. As soon as they deemed her strong enough she was aloud to go home and be with Kimmer. He knew she would never remember him, but the only choice he had left was to make her fall in love with him all over again. She started another job and at least once a week they went on date nights. They dated enough to the point where Kimmer decided it was time for him to propose to his wife for the only the second time. They had a beautiful wedding ceremony and she wore her dress from the first wedding. Kimmer and her promised they wouldn’t buy different rings. They would use the ones from the first wedding. But they went out and bought new rings anyway without the other person knowing. They have an amazing life now and thank God for being on their side through all of this. They have been blessed with two beautiful children. One boy and one girl. Their story has inspired so many people. They have been featured in newspapers, magazines and now, a movie.
In the book “The Vow”, the theme of the story would be to never give up and keep on trying. Krickett and Kimmer didn’t even live in the same state at the beginning of the book and they still pushed to be together because their love was so strong. After Krickett’s accident she didn’t even remember her own husband. Kimmer didn’t give up and leave her, he stayed with her and helped her along the way even though he knew she would probably never remember him. Kimmer put fourth all the effort to make Krickett fall in love with him again. He didn’t get discouraged when she would get mad at herself for not remembering that she ever married him. She just tried her best to fall back in love with the guy she married six months ago.
I think that girls would be mostly interested in a book like this one. It’s a romance novel. “The Vow” is actually better then most books I’ve read. It’s very touching. You would think after something so tragic happened your life would never be the same. Krickett and Kimmer’s lives weren’t the same, but they did everything they could to make it as close to normal as possible. I think that is truly what I loved most about the book.
A quote that I really liked was “Lying in bed late one night with Krickett asleep beside me, I came face – to – face once again with the fact that only God could heal our marriage.” This quote can be found on page 136. This quote really spoke to me because a HUGE part of their lives was their faith. Their faith was truly what got them through such a rough patch in their lives. They knew god was always with them.
The book as effected me very positively. I’m the hopeless romantic type, and I think that it is beyond adorable that Kimmer would go through so much just to make this girl fall head over heels in love with him for a second time because she doesn’t remember ever doing it for the first time. I feel a relationship with the theme “Never Give Up And Keep On Trying” because even if it’s a relationship, a softball game or even making a snowman, never give up. That’s something we are taught when we are young and it sticks with us. If we want to get stuff done, we can’t give up.

Kim and Krickitt Carpenter are hundreds of miles apart, but are brought together by one phone call. Soon that phone call turns into many. And what first started out as two minute talks turns into countless hours of conversation. As time goes on Krickitt flys down to New Mexico, where Kim lives, to meet him for the first time. They hit it off immediately. And they quickly start making trips back and forth to see each other. Soon after they fall in love Kim asks Krickitt for her hand in marriage and she happily agrees. But only two months after their marriage tragedy strikes. On their way up to Phoenix to stay with Krickitt’s parents for Thanks Giving they get in a terrible wreck. One of which neither of them should have survived. Kim is in horrible condition himself, but Krickitt is worse. She has serious brain damage and isn’t expected to make it through the night. But with God’s grace, many prayers, and amazing doctors and nurses, she does. As Krickitt slowly begins her recovery it becomes known that she can only remember up to a certain point in her life. A time before she knew Kim at all. With this devastating news and no sign of Krickitt ever gaining that part of her memory back, Kim must make a decision. Will he stand by his wife who doesn’t remember him? Or will this end their marriage and any chance of a future they had together?

I recommend The Vow to anyone looking for a good story that us filled with love, trial and faith. The Vow really makes one appreciate what they have and shows the ways God is always working. I enjoyed seeing how much commitment was in their hearts throughout the story and how much they trusted God to take care of them. There wasn’t anything about this story that I disliked. This was a time in their lives they will never for get and they showed amazing strength and courage through. What’s not to like about that? I highly recommend The Vow for anyone who is looking for an inspirational story to read.

Watched the movie and then read "The Vow, the true events that inspired the move". An amazing story. Basically it is a miracle that Krickitt survived the accident and that she recovered as well as she did. The book is very good when relating the facts of there courtship and the accident. However, the part about her recovery and the two of them getting back together again is not communicated as well. It is difficult to get a feel for when things started to turn around for them. It would have done their story justice to perhaps work with a seasoned writer to help them recount what happened in a way that would make sense to the readers. This is not a boring story. But it is told in a boring way.

Kim begins the story, if I remember correctly, with a heartfelt description of their meeting, courtship, and blissful first weeks of marriage. After their tragic accident occurs and he puts forth a heroic effort to follow his wife to another hospital to which she was airlifted, even before his own injuries had been evaluated, his tone flattens as he describes her recovery and homecoming. He discusses in repetition the bleak moments in her journey back to health, where he could have summarized while still accurately conveying the repetitive, often discouraging nature of extensive physical and mental therapy. She finally comes home to live with him, downright grieved and befuddled by the fact that she's married to some guy she doesn't remember, and they restart a life together.

This is where, I believe, his retelling truly disappoints in that he doesn't seem to give any attention to the woman Krickett became after much of her therapy had ended, and their life had begun again. He mentions her personality change, her lack of impulse control, but did she recover at all from these things? In what ways, if at all, did she resemble her former self? It perhaps would have bettered the story to simply continue it--they stayed married and continued on to have children, but the reader really doesn't have much of an idea how it happened. And to remain together in the midst of such a rare and awful tragedy, when there didn't seem to be much reason TO stay together, is an admirable accomplishment that deserves a better portrayal than the skeletal one that Kim pieced together.

That pretty much sums up the whole book. This is a straightforward account of the lightning speed meeting, courtship, and wedding of the Carpenters, and then the horrific accident and recovery that followed 2 months after the wedding as told by Kim. Krickitt is the subject of the book, with a few of her thoughts and prayers narrated through her journal entries. Having watched the movie before reading the book, I wasn't prepared for just how Christ centered this couple was and how devoted to staying in the marriage they both were (unlike the movie). Even through Krickitt's amnesia she still held fast to her faith. God certainly brought this couple through the valley of darkness and the journey they took and the lessons of faith they learned were powerful.

Why only 3 stars? The book was good, but not outstanding. The incredible story of survival was impressive, but the account given was just average. Kim often repeats several sections of his (and her) feelings. Though chronologically correct (and I'm a stickler for details like that so I was thankful), it got a bit repetitive. The book itself is very short and there are gaps in the timeline that were glossed over or skipped ahead so quickly. I wish Krickitt could have given some of her thoughts in first person through the confusing time of realizing she had amnesia and the process she had to go through of adjusting to a life she didn't remember.

This couple freely admits their shortcomings and struggles through the process and testifies to the healing work of God through all adversity. It is a refreshing story in a world focused on media flash and the easy way out. I wonder why Hollywood felt the need to change the Carpenters' story so much for film. Even the account of the car accident and the minutes that followed felt more Hollywood than what was on screen.(less)

I received this book as a freebie from B&N. (gotta love those freebies). I wasn't quite sure what to expect. In 1993, Krickett Carpenter suffered a severe brain injury. This book is about her recovery.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. It is a little dry as it is told from the perspective of Kim Carpenter. He doesn't go into great detail and the book is a little short. Several months ago, my teenage daughter remarked that she wanted to see the movie, The Vow. When I was grocery shopping, I purchased the book in hope she would read the story. However, after the book sat for months unread, I decided to pick it up and check it out for myself.

This is when I discovered The Vow was based upon a true life story about Krickitt and Kim Carpenter. In 1992, the young couple met, bonded through their Christian faith and fell in love over a long distance phone call.

I found the story to be very inspirational. A couple barely married are in a tragic accident. While the husband is injuired, the wife is injured more, to the point of serious brain damage and not expected to live and have amnesia to the point of not remembering any of their relationship. This is the story of how they found their way back to each other.

There was something about this book I just loved. It had a huge spiritual role throughout the book, which normally I can only take so much of in reading books, but this one just seemed to fit quite well. It was heartbreaking some of the obstacles they had to push through together, but in the end of everything it turned out so comforting.

Ugh. I decided to read the book that had been on the back of every shelf of every single library in the world (for good reason) because after seeing the trailer for the movie I was compelled to look for the book.. This book is 3.5 stars for me. Very quick read, I literally read it in a few hours. While the book won't win any literary awards, it was written by the actual couple. In ways I feel like the book was therapeutic for Kim and you can tell by the way the story progresses. I think the original book was written in the late 90s and you can definitely tell they pieced together the update from then until now- it's like 40 pages long.
