With interest growing in the tradition of women's writing, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) has been transformed from a colorful eccentric to an important writer. This book is the first to take her writing achievement seriously, as well as re-telling a life-story which every newly uncovered detail renders more extraordinary.

I know this seems an odd book to love so much - but I had to write a paper on someone in college. Once I read this book, I was completely fascinated with Lady Mary. A true life adventuress, smarter than anyone around her, a writer in secret but also semi-incidentally, the savior of many people through her advocacy of small pox vaccinations usage in the West following her time in Turkey. Her letters are published and are also highly interesting, but it is her own story that is most amazing.

Excellent biography, and fills in some of the speculation about MWM writing some of the pages of Spectator. I have a full run of Spectator, but as it was printed in the late 1700s, it's delicate and must be carefully read. When I do read it, I try to peg which of them wrote what.
