Enjoyed this one. Love it when the main characters start out not liking each other. Well, he definitely did not like for… and for a good reason.

No one knows why Dr. Lara Mallory came back home to Eden Pass, Texas to open up her medical practice after all these years. But everyone remembers her role in the well-publicized scandal that caused the downfall of White House hopeful Senator Clark Tackett....

Narrator: Natalie Ross

Not even Natalie Ross' narration could save this. I like most of SB's books, both her oldies and newer ones. If I've read Where There's Smoke, I must have blocked it from my memory because I did not like this at all.

At first, it felt like the same old SB southern romance of rich vs white trash (which I enjoy so that's not a complaint) but I never warmed to Lara Mallory.

The first half, before they left for Montesangre, was okay. Good, in fac
I was one of the lucky winners of the goodreads first reads program. I've enjoyed a lot of books by Sandra Brown so far, but this one is currently my favorite.

Feuer in Eden (Where There's Smoke) is a really complex story about Dr. Lara Mallory and Key Tackett, the son of a texan oil-dynasty.
Lara Mallory is said to have been involved with Key's brother,Clay , a senator, while being married. When the affair became public, Lara and her ambassador husband are forced to accept a position in a war co

3.5 stars rounded down for Amazon. I was hoping for a romance novel, but this was more of a mystery. I was annoyed with parts of the story.

I was mad at Lara toward the end. Key deserved to be told all truths, but Lara chose to keep secrets from him. She didn't tell him that Clark was gay because she didn't want him to be hurt. Her logic was wrong because Key thought she didn't want him when she really did. Another problem: on the night of explosion, Jody left home to stop Janell
I must agree with my friends. Best Sandra Brown book I've read. She is an amazing author with unexpected twists and turns and I was most definitely NOT disappointed in this book. Shocking revelations in the last 40 pages or so. Wow. Might be one that I actually read again, in digital format of course, will be passing this on to my sister insisting she read it first!!

OK, a fun trashy summer read. My 93 year old grandma passed it on to me!

Dr. Lara Mallory is a fallen woman since a tabloid incident involving her and Senator Clark Tackett. She had been married at the time, and found anything but a forgiving attitude following the scandal. Finally, after Clark Tackett dies and leaves her a medical practice in his home town of Eden Pass, Texas, she decides to start over there. Besides, she believes the Tackett family owes her, and she’s in town to collect a favor from Clark’s younger brother, notorious playboy Key. Things are even to ...more
First off: I got this book as a goodreads giveaway.

I always wanted to read something by Sandra Brown and I’m grateful for the signed copy of her book. But, sadly, after reading close to a hundred pages of the novel I have to say that it isn’t mine.

There’s certain romance tropes that I can’t stand much, and one of them is to start out with a as irredeemable appearing male main character as possible, and Key, the books male hero, is a role model in that department. Lead character Key hates Lara, o

This novel, like the other ones I have read by Ms. Brown, was pretty good. She knows how to weave a tale.

This was a romance with thriller elements. The female characters are represented as strong willed women, who know how to get what they want, just not always in an above board fashion.

There were many incidences of "karmic retribution", and twisty redemptions. I have to admit here that I had already figured out one of the big reveals beforehand, but was more than satisfied with a number of surp
Hmmm...I didn't seem to enjoy this particular Brown novel as much as I have some her other's. Ca la vie!

Recommends it for: Sandra Brown fans, people who like soaps, people who like the show Dallas and others like it
Disclaimer: No synopsis here, considering you can read the blurb for the book and PLENTY of those in other's comments. Relatively quick & to the point.

Secrets, lies, malicious persecution, undeniable attraction, excitement, and adventure over multiple story arcs. Reading it now, it felt almost like historical fiction...considering it occurred in my lifetime,it made me realize how much has actually happened in the last 20+ years. Anyway, a pretty good read and solid work that you expect from S

I'm on a Sandra Brown roll now. This one had another surprise that I didn't see coming. Not quite as great as Deadline, but still managed to make me say, hmm. This one is set in a small Texas town run by a matriarch of an oil family, the Tacketts. Now I've always appreciated my sweet mother, but this mama is cold and mean. Our hero turned out great anyway, though he's something of a bad boy. But we love those, don't we? Our heroine was caught in a scandal with the golden boy of the oil rich fami ...more
Romantic thriller that was a quick, easy read. The characters were somewhat stereotyped, but you still cared about them. Dr. Lara Mallory is given a medical practice by Clark Tackett, the man whose political career she ruined by being found in his bedroom in the middle of the night. The practice is in his family hometown, where his wealthy and powerful mother Jody is determined to ruin Lara. Clark's brother Key, back in town after a long absence stumbles into the medical practice bleeding from a ...more
Great read. I think that I enjoy Sandra Brown books because almost all of them are set in Texas and Louisiana so I can really picture the settings. This one moves very fast and has a good plot. Key and Lara are good characters that develop throughout. Definitely not a disappointment.
Very promising start. Oh, good!> I thought, one of her readables ones.>

OOOPs. The more I read, the worse it got--the language, plot, preachiness, characters full of psychobabble about themselves and others. Ugh. I had to stop.
This is a great romantic suspense read from Sandra Brown, when Lara returns home and gets an unexpected homecoming. She's a great heroine to root for... in the long run.
I have never been disappointed by a Sandra Brown novel. She writes with feeling and the detail is such that I can often see exactly what she's projecting with my mind's eye. This novel was no different. While all of the novels I have read so far have an element of romance in them, it isn't the driving force. They have many other elements as well, suspense, drama, mystery and she weaves the tapestry together so well. Some books are easily figured out long before the last page has been read but Sa ...more
Great storyline to this book - easy read........and it contained pretty much any element you would look for in a book: Romance, Intrigue, Treason, Unfaithfulness, Mistaken Identify, Truth, Drama, Trauma, and mystique. What more could you ask for? Halfway through the book I thought I had it all figured out - - NOT so fast....the intrigue is only beginning. Sandra Brown finishes up all her books to have people play nice in the end - and this one is no different. Its a great entertaining read wher ...more
Out of all SB books, I would say I liked this one the least. I did like it a little, and didn't regret reading it. I re read all of SB book a lot, but not this one. I wished Lara and Key and more of a relationship besides all the "somebody is trying to kill me" drama, and people wanting Lara gone because of something she was blamed for, that wasn't her fault. I would have liked the thing she was blamed for to be completely cleared up. For me personally the whole thing with her daughter was a bit ...more
3.5* Where There's Smoke is a romantic suspense in that it places the relationship of the two main characters in the forefront of the readers mind, if not the forefront of the action. The reader is constantly aware that Key and Lara will end up together, as in any romance book. But after establishing that fact, Brown seems fairly unconcerned with the romance and more with the layered suspense and mystery plot lines. The more satisfying relationship development takes place between two secondary c ...more

This book was one of the slower sandra brown reads for me in a while. Usually within the first few chapters im sucked in and flipping pages as fast as i can read. This book started gettting exciting and speeding up somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 the way in. However, having said that i have spent some late nights up reading on and on and enjoyed the story/ plot thicken when it picked up. Im about 20 pages from the end. So its starting to wrap up and i want to give it a review again at the end.

The only thing I dislike about Sandra Brown's books is that the hero is almost always kinda brutish and jerky... Although they end up with soft-gooey centers by the end ('Where There's Smoke' is no different), I find it a bit difficult to root for them and the inevitable relationship with the main character... I have only read a few of her books, but trust me there is a formula. Other than that, she writes a decent mystery and this story was intriguing.
