Recommends it for:
older children, no anyone, who enjoyed the first Owen and Mzee story
The sequel to Owen & Mzee: The True Story Of A Remarkable Friendship, Owen & Mzee: The Language Of Friendship provides a detailed and informative account of Owen (a young hippopotamus) and Mzee's (a 130 year old aldabra tortoise) first year and a half together at the sanctuary (Haller Park in Kenya). There is a short and succinct account of Owen's rescue and his transport to the sanctuary, but most of the story presented in Owen & Mzee: The Language Of Friendship features Owen and M...more
The sequel to this amazing, unique friendship between Owen, a hippo and Mzee a tortoise, captured me as much as the first book, if not more. I am interesting in finding out more about the future of these two, because the authors note that things have got to change in some way for Owen because he is awake in the heat of the day when hippos usually sleep and eats the same food as Mzee which is not what hippos eat, so there is a discussion beginning about moving Owen into an area with another orpha...more
There's a recap of the first book if you want to skip ahead to this. But both have good science and sweet photos. I appreciate this one because it made clear a couple of things that children need to know.
1. Since Owen did not associate with other hippos, it seems he doesn't quite 'know' he is one - and since he eats what Mzee eats, he's not getting everything a growing hippo needs for best health. And he's probably going to have trouble doing his bit to help save the species from ...more

If you're going to read one of these books (the story of a remarkable friendship or the Language of Friendship) I would recommend reading this one. The first few pages are a recap of the first book and then it tells what happens to their friendship as Owen continues to grow.
I would recommend this to 1st-5th grade. A beautiful story of friendship and how as living creatures, we need companionship and love.

Owen was just a baby when he was orphaned in 2004 because of a devastating tsunami. After being rescued and moved to Haller Park in Kenya, he met Mzee (mm-zay), a 130 year old Aldabra tortoise and the two began an unlikely friendship. The Language of Friendship is the follow up book to the original story of Owen and Mzee and explains how the two communicate and happily coexist. Age 10 and up.
Our family *loves* the true story of Owen and Mzee. Brought together by the 2004 Tsunami; Owen and Mzee have a remarkable friendship. Owen is a young hippopotamus. Mzee (Mm-zay) is a 130 year old Aldabra tortoise. Both animals overcome instinctual behavior to develop a true bond.
The Owen and Mzee books have been fabulous learning tools for us. The globe and maps have been explored as we located Africa, Kenya, and the other countries the Tsunami affected. We've researched Tsunam...more

Owen and mzee: This book is about two animals that need help and try to help each other out; and sometimes in the book it said that Owen and mzee thought/felt like they were real people. And again just help each other out. The cover and the illustrations were very good and appealing to me. I would recommend this book to animal lovers.
This book ties into the introduction of Owen and Mzee. I think this story would be great to teach around a lesson involving friendship. Even read in February during black history month you could focus on the idea of two individuals who no one thought would get along with would become such good friends. The main emphasis is that anyone can be friends. I really like these stories overall and the pictures are so much fun to look at just because you know its a real story.

I read the original story of Owen & Mzee and wanted to read this story as well. It takes a deeper look into the friendship between the two friends. There is nothing like this story. It is remarkable. I would recommend this story to anyone.

I didn't like this as much as the first one. It covered the story presented in the first book, and then it gave an update. I found some of the little anecdotes cute and fun, but thought it was sad that they might be separated for Mzee's safety. I didn't like how the book ended on that note. Again, the photographs were great!
This beautiful true story is both touching and intriguing. Filled with gorgeous photographs and interesting facts about the tortoise and hippo who have become unlikely friends.
A good book but a lot of the same information that was in the original book. Still an amazing story about friendship. I do believe friends come in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
Sequel to the first Owen and Mzee book! Just as good as the first one, a must read. This book would also be good for friendship. Good to read during the first week of school.
Loved this book of the tale of a friendship of a 130 year old grumpy turtle and a baby hippo. I love baby hippos, but this was so cute to hear of how their friendship came to be.
Not as good as the original but has the same style of photographs and writing. Includes talking points of friendship and odd couples.
If you ever have a bad day, one of those days when you wonder if it's all worth it and if there is any hope that humans can know what it is to be united.... read this. The continuing story of Owen and Mzee, best friends. Observers are still puzzled as to why a reptile like Mzee would develop an attachment to a mammal like Owen. It gets more freaky - they've developed a language that is unique to the two of them, bearing no relation to hippo or tortoise noisemaking. So there, bad day! We're ...more
I LOVE this book!Even a hippo and a Tortoise can be friends! This book is all about Friendship!
Sweet story of a hippo and tortoise who become friends. Great photographs, too.
This is one of my favorite stories of acceptance and friendship. I just love it!
Another great story about the adventures of a famous hippo and tortious.
Heartwarming story of real friendship between two creatures.
Beware ! This book might melt your heart it is so loving!
It was just barely okay. Nothing like the first book.

I think that this book is fun and cuite
This a good nature book.

Oops! I accidentally ordered the second book about this remarkable pair from the library not realizing there were two. Went ahead and read it anyway; it's really sweet and I don't think the sequence matters that much. About the continuing friendship between a young hippo named Owen, stranded by the 2004 tsunami and rescued by a man named Owen, and a one-hundred and fifty year old tortoise, Mzee. Just think what a lot of changes Mzee (pronounced Mm-ZAY) has seen in his lifetime!
Continued tale of the baby hippo Owen and the 130 year old tortoise Mzee. Introduction of another tortoise friend, Toto, and the possibility of a hippo friend. Appendix includes additional information. Photographs accompany text.
This book is similar to the first one, but it also shared further details about Owen & Mzee's life together as time progressed. I'm still intrigued by this story of an amazing friendship between a tortise and a hippo.
