There are certain types of books that are almost guaranteed to keep me turning the pages into the late hours of the night. The first is any novel that develops a compelling story of the complexities found in human relationships. Second, I love a great piece of historical fiction that places me in a previous moment in time. And, finally, I gravitate towards thrilling mysteries that are filled with breath-taking action and plot twists. For literary satisfaction on the last count, I am so excited t...more

A serial killer huntress

Everyone rates books on different things. For myself it’s whether or not the pages keep turning, and if it’s a story that draws me back to my Kindle to pick up where I left off. Chase’s unique writing style in COMPULSION fits this description.

Emily Stone has a past, and it drives her to find serial killers and bring the family of the victims some closure and justice. What she doesn’t realize is her line of work is about to catch up with her when she becomes the target of...more

Take a seat, grab a bag of popcorn, and get ready to dive into Compulsion. From page one, Jennifer Chase grips readers with a compelling story centered around the heroine Emily Stone and her passion for tracking down child abductors. When she discovers that a duo of local serial killers are after her, threatening to expose her identity and her end her life.

I found myself unable to peel myself away from this crime fiction novel, as the short chapters written from various perspectives kept the sto...more

I read Dead Game before I read this one. This is apparently Jennifer's first book in the Emily Stone series. I think she learned a lot between the two books. In this one, she starts off writing in the present tense and then she begins skipping between the present and past, sometimes within one paragraph. It's very confusing and the only reason I didn't give it a five star.

I enjoyed the book very much. The plot was interesting and I love Emily Stone, the character. What she does, chasing serial k...more

Compulsion is a fresh and exciting debut focussing on crime and the devastating, life-changing effects it can have on everyone involved, including the cops who have the unenviable task of uncovering victims and digging them out of their shallow graves.

The heroine, Emily Stone, is a complex and well-written character who comes to terms with the injustice of a past tragedy by acquiring justice for her self and others through hunting down serial killers.

I have a weakness for cop and vigilante thr...more

The Killers are Coming!

That's right two killers. Jennifer Chase takes us into the life of serial killer-hunter Emily Stone. Emily is the secret behind the resolution of many serial killings and kidnappings, but no one knows her name. Her messages to the appropriate detectives and investigators are always sent anonymously, but always full of information carefully collected to ensure convictions and long sentences for the criminals.

That is until one astute police officer traces the messages back t...more

Page turner for sure, however it would have benefited from some editing. The story itself is compelling. Emily hunts for serial killers and provides the information to law enforcement. The clever twists in the plot, and the mounting fervor of the killer drive the story along relentlessly. I would have given this a 5 except for the need for editing, and I found that the dialogue and actions when it came to intimacy were quite awkward and stilted. Perhaps the author is more comfortable with crime...more

Get ready for a page-turner! Compulsion is a thriller that will chill you as you turn up the heat flipping through the pages to see what will happen next. The action is furious and quick-paced. The plot twists and turns deliciously. The characters are engaging and will make you feel as if you know them intimately. God bless you if you ever meet up with a serial killer such as the two demons who do their dastardly deeds in this book!

I have not read a chiller that was as engaging as this book in y...more

Emily Stone is a super crime fighter. For a woman so intense in revealing crimes, with evidence, of child predators and killers, you have to wonder what drives her to work alone without any back-up. She's a loner, telling people who inquire about her profession that she's a writer. But her massive collection of weapons and surveillance devices outshines even agents of local enforcement agencies. She has an uncanny skill of tracking down serial killers, and she only shares her reasons with Detect...more

Where to start? I liked the book, however, I'm not a fan of present tense, it just throws me for some reason, I don't know why. That's not a deficiency of the book, just a personal preference of mine :)
That preference aside, it was a good story.

There were twists and turns in the plot. Some I saw coming, others I didn't. There were times I was confident in what I thought would happen, only to doubt myself a few pages later. I love to try to figure out who did it, and how an author's going to wra...more

This book was a story in the making for some time. I finally decided to write it early last year. Thrillers, suspense and mystery novels are my favorite types of books to read. I hope that thriller lovers enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it!

This was the first introduction of Emily who spends her days searching out serial killers and child abductors. She has a special sense of where to start that the police do not. Very strong female character. Can not wait for many more books with Emily

Here is a different kind of heroine who isn't afraid to take on the worst kind of killers. The story is fast paced and will keep you up all night reading.Chase knows how to build up suspense right up to the end. Great reading.

Gave it three starts instead of four because of the lack of editing. It was distracting when reading. Otherwise I liked it and will keep reading.

This was in general a good book. There were many things I liked about this novel including Emily's relentless attitude towards taking down serial killers, the looks into the lives of two radically different serial killers, and the way Emily was completely selfless in her pursuits of the worst kinds of killers. This novel was a little heavy on the police details which greatly effected my opinion, but to others that may be extremely appropriate. The book was a quick read and I will definitely read...more
