Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico (1876-1880 and 1884-1911) dominated his country during a crucial phase of its development into a modern nation. The political rule of Porfirio Diaz has mostly been viewed from the perspective of the Mexican Revolution which finally toppled him from power - holding that he was the cause of, and deserved, his own downfall. But Diaz has rece ...more

In terms of style, this book definitely serves as more of an analysis of different aspects of the porfiriato than chronology of the life and politics of Díaz. As such, I found it a difficult read. I also didn't like the author's writing style, which seemed to me to lack rhythm, with dull repetitions of words like "regardless", "nonetheless", and "therefore" and repetitive sentence structure.

Caudillo, General, Presidente, tirano...

This is a pretty balanced examination of the rise and fall of Porfirio Diaz, who served as President of Mexico for most of the 35 years before the Mexican Revolution (1876-1880, 1884-1910). I didn't know much about Diaz before reading this book, but I found it to be accessible to the non-specialist. The author attempts to be fair and frequently weighs the relative merits of pro and anti Porfirio arguments. I suspect this is one of the more sympathetic and apologetic accounts of his tenure.
