This cornucopia of Italian delights titillates the senses and entices the imagination. Occasionally fringing on the irreverent (who else but Susan van Allen would dream of calling the Blessed Virgin Mary the BVM, for instance – only kidding, grrll!), and bordering on the erotic (as in Susan’s description of The Capitoline Venus attempting to cover her “Cupid’s cloister”), Susan’s selective guide to Italian beauty and beauties scampers through both urban and rural landscape with exuberant glee.

This sounded like something I should definitely check out before my trip this somewhere. It would probably be more useful if I were going more places in Italy than just the Veneto region. Some good tips, especially the one about making your own masks in Venice, and how to tell if the gelato is home-made and not mass produced.
I didn't expect this book to be as helpful as it was. In Florence I went to at least 2 of her suggested haunts & they're very fond memories due to the wonderful, warm people I met there. I researched another spot which ended up being too costly for my budget but having read about it & then going to the web site, I feel like I got lots of the joy and wonder of the experience for free. Now THAT's good travel writing. I recommend this to anyone heading to Italy or for anyone wanting to feel...more
