The one place that I want to see before I die, is Italy. I've always been fascinated with the beauty of Italy. It's such a gorgeous place and I adore Italian food. I know for a fact that the first place I would visit would have to be Rome. I want to see the Pieta at Saint Peter's Basilica. Then I would move on to Florence to see the Costume Gallery. Of course I would have to visit Florence.

After reading this book, I want to go more than I ever imagined possible. The details included brought Ita...more

This cornucopia of Italian delights titillates the senses and entices the imagination. Occasionally fringing on the irreverent (who else but Susan van Allen would dream of calling the Blessed Virgin Mary the BVM, for instance – only kidding, grrll!), and bordering on the erotic (as in Susan’s description of The Capitoline Venus attempting to cover her “Cupid’s cloister”), Susan’s selective guide to Italian beauty and beauties scampers through both urban and rural landscape with exuberant glee.

This book would truly be a treasure in your library, virtual library, or even in your life via iPhone app. Whether you want to find a cooking course, spa, religious retreat, great beach, or just some fabulous shopping, Susan has it covered – in every corner of the Bel Paese.

When I first received this book, I thought it would be something I’d flip through every now and again when the mood struck; instead I found myself reading chapters straight through, imagining myself visiting all of the wonde...more

This is an interesting and useful book for travellers to Italy. The title suggests that this book is of particular interest to women, but men may also find interesting tidbits. It is not necessarily a book to read from cover to cover (which indeed I haven't done), but rather a book to dip into as and when the mood or necessity arises.

Chapters are grouped according to interest which may be shopping, beauty treatments, etc. or art, churches, buildings, gardens, music, literature, cooking classes,...more

I didn't expect this book to be as helpful as it was. In Florence I went to at least 2 of her suggested haunts & they're very fond memories due to the wonderful, warm people I met there. I researched another spot which ended up being too costly for my budget but having read about it & then going to the web site, I feel like I got lots of the joy and wonder of the experience for free. Now THAT's good travel writing. I recommend this to anyone heading to Italy or for anyone wanting to feel...more

This sounded like something I should definitely check out before my trip this somewhere. It would probably be more useful if I were going more places in Italy than just the Veneto region. Some good tips, especially the one about making your own masks in Venice, and how to tell if the gelato is home-made and not mass produced.

Funny, irreverent guidebook featuring favorite places of Susan and her friends. Get your armchair or suitcase ready for a girlfriend getaway.

Trivialized travel in one of my most treasured places. Dreadful.
