I once upon a time read Luanne Rice. And then stopped reading her books because it seemed the characters were starting to overlap themselves in my mind. And even though it’s been years since I read Rice, it seemed like just yesterday, and the characters were once again typical of her novels. This book is all about the relationships between parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, and the choices they made in life. As a mother of a wonderful daughter I found myself often angry with L...more

Nisto temos ainda o relato das imens...more

The Summer of our lives was the first book I read of this author, and to be honest not much excited me a lot.
This book talks about, forgiveness, hope, reconciliation, love, the departure could be tonics for a good novel, but turned out to be a very exciting book. The story takes place in the beautiful Capri, the author manages to describe beautiful landscapes, and sites that we want to convey to there, so long the narrative we enter then into Lyra's life, a woman who abandoned her daughters and...more

I've read some Luanne Rice books better than this one and some worse - this was about middle of the road with the typical Rice characters trying to deal with a myriad of life trials and angst. In this book, Pell and Lucy, two teenagers, are trying to come to grips with a mother who abandoned them when they were 4 and 6 years old and went to live on the island of Capri. After their father dies and Lucy starts exhibiting some strange behavior, Pell, the older of the two sisters, decides it's time...more

This book made me want to book a flight to Capri. The authors visualization in setting the scenes in Capri made me feel I was there. Pell travels to Capri to see her mother, Lyra, for the first time in 10 years to try to reunite with her mother and convince her to come home. Having lost her father to a brain tumor, she desparately wants to have a parent in her and her sister Lucy's lives. Lyra left the girls in their childhood after suffering from severe depression, and the feeling she needed to...more

I just finished my second Luanne Rice read and ir just happened to be a sequel to The Geometry Sisters. I find it interesting that I just randomly picked about both books from the library having no idea what either was about. Although I wouldn't say that I loved the story, I do enjoy her writing hence the second random read.

Both reads about "ghost in the nursery" meaning family secrets that slowly shake the very foundation of homes, lost love, and bonds that distance and time can not erode.

I'm not sure why I grabbed this one on my way out of the library one day as I had given up (for the most part) on Luanne Rice as I couldn't handle any more campy-ness. But this one wasn't so bad. The very end showed remnants of that over the top sweetness; but for the most part, she seemed to rein herself in for the majority of the book. And I have come to the conclusion that I am an excessively violent person because if my mother left me as a child, the first thing I would have done upon meetin...more

A departure from her normal books (you know, woman gets beat up by husband and escapes to start a new life only to find love again...or womans husband dies and she finds out deep dark secrets about his past. etc.)

Years ago wealthy and priviledged socialite Lyra Davis battled depression and anxiety. She cannot be who she feels she is supposed to be, rather she does what is "expected" by her family, and is never happy.
So she does what she can to save herself and her sanity... She flees from her ma...more

Pell and Lucy Davis are 14 and 16 going on 30. They have survived their mother, Lyra, abandoning them at at young age, their father dying of a brain tumor, and have learned to only trust themselves. As The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners opens, we meet Pell on her way to Capri to reunite with her mother, seeking the truth of her departure, and hoping to restore their relationship for her and her sisters sake.

I would recommend this book to individuals seeking a quick summer read. The author's descri...more

here are my thoguhts on the book: it started out a little slow and i dont think that a lot of backround information about Pell and her mother's relationship was given up front and so i didnt get the depth to that as much as i would have liked in the begining.
also, i was disgusted by max's affections toward lyra. a grandfatherly relationship would be just fine.
i found rafe's character to be the most interesting. i liked the little pieces you learned about him especially with monica and the inci...more

I actually enjoyed this sequel to THE GEOMETRY OF SISTERS more than the first one. But it was the descriptions of Capri that made it so fascinating to me. Though I must admit that I loved the character of Max and his relationship with Lyra. I also was drawn to Rafe and his struggle to get his life back on an even keel. I loved his rescues of stranded sea creatures like starfish. And the passages with the descriptions of the sea horses made me want to hop on a plane and go there. The family dynam...more

This would be a good young adult book. Pell is an amirable character. She really should be older than 16 given how she thinks and some of her activities.
Taylor acted correctly. Lyra is not someone to admire. It's hard to believe she had no contact with her children for so long. There is middle ground. It seems like she could have seen the girls but not been in charge of them. There still would have been a story.
I can't believe how Lyra acted when Rafe was in the hospital. She ditched her own gi...more

I have read many other Luanne Rice books and this was the worst one by far. I didn't like Lyra at all and her choices -- as a mother there are some things you just do not do. I couldn't understand how she had children and then stopped fighting for the right to see them and parent them. And I didn't like how her daughters, at 14 and 16, could express themselves as 24 year olds. The ending was the worst -- I didn't like that everything was resolved "happily ever after" and the kids could forgive t...more

I never met a Luann Rice book I did not like. I'm serious. I love the way Luann does families. I eat it up. I can't get enough. It's one of the things I try to emulate in my own writing--portraying those really complicated issues that family members and close friends face, the price you pay for being close to another person, what they feel, who they are. This really emotional connection with the characters is what I like best about novels.

In The Deep Blue Sea For Beginners, sixteen year old Pell...more

It was okay, not as good as the first book in the series. I do recommend read the first book " The Geometry of Sisters" first however...

I loved this book. Although the mother in this book made a LOT of bad choices she tried to do what she thought was the best for her Girls. Although Children no matter need a parent, but what if that parent is not ok? The Children will not be ok if the parent is not ok. Some people do not seem to give children the credit to know if a child must be mature or have wisdom they will usually raise to the occasion, it just depends on the child. I enjoyed this book, obviously.

The most angst-ridden, dramatic people in the world gather together in Italy. I like a few of Rice's books, but this one just kept getting more and more silly. How many tragedies can possibly occur between so few people? Guess we'll find out. And if there aren't enough tragic deaths at young ages (was EVERYONE'S father dead in this book?) then we'll put in terrible choices and misunderstandings, etc etc. I just wanted a little comic relief, or a laugh, or a smile!

this book revisits characters from the geometry of sisters. the story follows Pell, as she travels from the states to the island of Capri where her mom has been living for the last 10 years after abandoning Pell and her younger sister, Lucy. family secrets are revealed as Pell learns more about herself, her mom and love.

thoroughly enjoyed this bookand read it over the weekend cuz i had a hard time putting it down. definitely recommend this book ... after you've read the geometry of sisters ;)

Continuation of the story told in "The Geometry of Sisters". This is the story of Pell Davis (girlfriend of Travis from "Geometry"). When Pell was six and her sister four her mom left the family and moved to Capri. Ten years later, after her dad dies, Pell goes to Capri to find mom and finds things are not what she expected. Another good story of normal flawed people whose love can overcome those flaws. Clean, well done, but not as good as "Geometry".

I've read and enjoyed other books by Luanne Rice, but I could not get into this one, and gave up after about 75 pages. The characters weren't particularly interesting, and I didn't find the 16 year old narrator (Pell) compelling. Additionally, one of the plot lines involving the actions of the mother (Lyra)in the past seemed far fetched. However, if you liked Rice's book "The Geometry of Sisters", several of the characters from that novel appeared in this book.

This is my first Luanne Rice book.I will definitely seek out more of her stuff. I found that her writing style really appealed to me it was beautiful and lyrical and so descriptive. The storyline really drew me in. I alwsys thought she was a romance writer so I had avoided her as that is not really my favorite to read but she is much more contemporary fiction. I would really recomend this one it made me think about love and forgiveness.

This book is kind of a continuation of Geometry of Sisters, focusing on different characters from that story. It deals with the bond between sisters and between mothers and daughters, the unbreakable bond which does not waver despite the challenges of time and distance. An excellent read. I was quite drawn to the characters, the story line, the descriptions of the beaches and seas of Capri, and the brief discussion of New England winters. A great summer read.

I did not realize that this was a sequel to Geometry of Sisters. It was nice to see the continuation of the story of Pell & her sister Lucy and their quest to reunite with their mother. It was a little pat in the resolution of problems, but I enjoyed the story any way. It was a good, light, enjoyable read. Not soemthing to read if you are looking for a book with a lot of meaning and depth. Just a good story, well told.

I have read many books by Luanne Rice but this was by far my least favorite. Like most of Rice's books the theme centered around family bonds, but for me, the bond between mother and child is sacred. I just couldn't sympathize with Lyra and her choice to stay away from her children. Rice tries to justify Lyra's actions but the truth is that the choice was always hers.

A psychological novel about the trauma 2 young girls face when their troubled heiress mother abandons them and flees to Capri, Italy leaving them with their loving father....Finally after 10 years, Pell, now 16 flies to Capri to see her mother in an attempt to learn the reasons for her mother's departure, while even deeper and more troubling questions surface................
