Book was a little hard to get into, but it is a young adult, so that may be the reason. Anyways, the book finally caught my interest about half way in. It is a good medieval story with a couple of twists to the story. I am in the second book now and finding it much more interesting. Will save these for my granddaughters. I hoped that Ayla and Roderick would get together in the first and now I hope Bree and Landon in the second. Can't help it, I am a romantic at heart.

“Roderick chased after her. “Wait! Where are you going?”
She shook her head, “I don’t know.”
She looked up seeing the smoke rising into the air from the direction of the walls. She could hear shouts and chaos still coming from the city.
“There’s so much to do.” She stopped, regarding the broken gates.
Roderick came up behind her and put an arm around her shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll do it together.” She looked down at his hand, remembering the identical slash she had seen there.
She turned and looked up at him. “Does that cut mean we’re married?”
He took a deep breathe and nodded. “It was the only way to save you from being joined to the prince and to empower the pendants.”
“Oh.” She said, her cheeks turning red.
“But only you have the power to rule, Ayla.” He turned to her, taking both her hands and kneeling. “And I will follow you, my queen, for as long as I live.”
Ayla couldn’t help but smile at his seriousness. She pulled him up and laughed slightly, throwing her arms around his neck and letting him lift her into the air. When her feet hit the ground again, they were in an embrace that Ayla never wanted to end.
“Promise me this!” She said.
“Anything.”
“When all this is over, can we have a real wedding?”
He laughed and nodded, “Yes.”
