This was an amazing book that everyone should read to find out what war is really like and how it affects people’s lives. What is so great about this book is the way Dean Hughes writes from the perspective of two characters. The first character is Spencer who is a recruit in the American Army. It was his dream and sole purpose to fight in World War II and to him it was a cool action packed adventure. Also, he wanted to be remembered as a hero and show to this girl that he likes that he...more

I went to bed two nights ago, after starting to read this book and dreamt that I was a soldier in Germany all night. I wouldn't say that I had nightmares, but I was running in a cold forest all night... with people shooting at me. (I guess that qualiies as a nightmare, but it really wasn't.) This isn't a scary book, it just had that effect on me. Really the message of the book is one of hope, staying true to your principles, and being kind.

This book had a really profound effect on me. Spencer demonstrated what it means to be a true Christian. The fact that a 16 year old boy is willing to show such humanity towards his "enemy" is very touching. I cried when I read the last page. Spencer started out as an innocent young boy who wanted to become an illustrious and famous soldier to impress a girl. He died as a much more remarkable hero - the type that doesn't win every honor that the army has to offer, the type that doesn't...more

I don't think I've ever read a more heartbreaking story in my life. This book was absolutely beautiful, following the tale of two young boys (one 15 and German, and the other 16 and American) who are on opposite sides during WWII. I enjoyed every minute of this amazing novel and Dean Hughs truly captures the essence of war and its effect on people. the ending was something I never would have expected and the way he wrote it had me sobbing my heart out - and I rarely ever cry when reading. It was...more

I enjoyed this book, except the end really upset me, but I'm a sucker for those "disney-type" endings, so that could just be my problem.
Anyway, this book has 2 main characters. One is a young boy - for most of the book he's 15 - who is a member of Hitler Youth, then the Nazi army. The other boy is about 17 and a member of the United States Army. You really get to feel for these boys, both of them. I have a rather large collection of holocaust books in my classroom and I thought...more

This is a wonderful book for upper grade students and adults who love and want to learn in-depth details about WWII.
Two boys, aged 17, who come from different family styles, different parts of the world, and different sides of the war learn the truth behind every war and that it is not as glorious and heroic as they thought it would be.
This book helps the reader realize what young boys were thinking before they joined the war, what their experiences were, and brings a heartfelt, tearful endi...more

I think all young men should read this book sometime before they turn 18. It is not a message of pro-war or anti-war. It is a frank, but not-too-graphic look at war and how viewpoints of those involved can change as their involvement changes. The 14 year old boy who recommended it, loved it! He's a history buff as well, and enjoyed the historical facts woven into the story. I wouldn't push anyone to read this until they are mature enough to understand the realities of war however. I'm glad he...more

I thought that this was a very interesting book. It tells about WWII from the piont of view of an American boy from Utah and a German boy who joined Hitler's Youth. The book tells about what the Hitler's Youth thought was going on and why the war started. The boys both go into training to go onto the front, were, by chance, they meet each other, and the result is both wonderful and heartbraking.

This book is a very exiting book with what i would call a great plot. There is a lot of action in many different parts when your past the introduction you cant stop ready because it's so entertaining. and the book grabs you in so to speak makes you want to know what happens next.
i would say that anyone that likes world war to or book about war, this is the book to read. It's very descriptive about the guns and tanks and wars in this book, witch i likes personally.

I love this book. I initially was wondering about how much I would like it since it is described as a "boy" book. It really surprised me, it is full of action and real struggles about war. The ending was unexpected but it just added to the story. The plot being about an American and German boy who each join up into WW2 at the age of 16. They each have a mentor and describe what the war is like in contrast to what they thought about it and the political climate at the time.

I enjoyed the book but hated the abrupt ending. I felt the story should continue on. I guess after reading the CHildren of the Promise and the Hearts of the Children series this Dean Hughes book dissappointed a little. It is a good read for kids and I enjoyed the true-to-life attitudes of the soldiers.

I thought it was interesting. Although the WW2 story is a bit told, he comes at it from a fresh angle that actually taught me some new things about the psychology of the Hitler regime. His writing style is nothing special though--but clear and easy to read.

What I learned from this book is to never give up and to quote from this book...

This is one that's a pleasure to teach to my 8th graders. The structure of the book, in which one chapter focuses on an American soldier, then another focuses on a German soldier during World War II, makes for easy character development lessons.
