I am absolutely delighted by this series. I didn't know about Jeanne Stein and her "Anna Strong Vampire" series until I read a vamp story by this author in the new anthology "Many Bloody Returns." Hers was one of my favorites, and that is the reason I read anthologies...to discover authors of series I am unfamiliar with. Then I googled Amazon to find what she had written and discovered this series.

Anna Strong is a bounty hunter that bites more then she can chew on when she hunts for a man. She and her partner are attack by a crazy man who ends up being more then a man he's a vampire. After the attack, Anna wakes up in a hospital recovering nicely..too nicely. She doesn't remember the attack, but slowly she realizes it was not a normal attack. The doctor sends her home and follows her to explain to her what had happen and what she needs to do about it. She is confused and doesn't know...more

Anna Strong is a bounty hunter who, inadvertently, goes against a vampire. When trying to apprehend the vamp, he attacks. Of course, he meant to kill her but somehow Anna wound up drinking his blood and becoming a vampire herself. She doesn’t realize it until the doctor at the hospital where she is taken tells her so. He becomes her mentor, so to speak, and her lover.
She needs an ally since someone is trying to kill her, it seems. She’s pulled over by a state trooper who is a vampi...more

I gave this book two stars because it was not actually technically flawed, and if you suspect there is a 'but' coming up, you are correct!
Anna, the protagonist, is made a vampire when she bites her rapist back. Then, she is possessed by some sort of vampiric rapturous lust, which Anna, the book, and Avery, the vampire who helps her cope with her new status all feel means that it was not rape. "It's frightening you because you realize you were a participant, not a victim."

I was pretty disappointed by this novel- it struck me as boring and predictable, and not in any good ways. I found some of the character's actions really surprising and didn't seem logical or fit with the character at all- until I realized that Stein needed them to something in order to move the plot.
The romance was entirely absurd, the sex scenes contrived nearly to the point of being unreadable, the plot didn't make sense, even after the denouement. I was left with all sorts of unanswered ...more

Would it be cliche if I said that I found this book, and the character of Anna Strong, weak?
It was lackluster and so moved so quickly that I when I finished, I wasn't even sure that I'd read the book. "Really? Wasn't that just the synopsis on the back? I must have missed the boat!"
Oh, and it's not exactly a twist when the author basically tells you what's going to happen. Or I gues I should just say it was predictable - either way it was disappointing, especially with a rec...more

fans of the "Anita Blake" series looking for a little less porn and a little more story...
This, the first book in the "Anna Strong" series, is a most worthy addition to the vampire genre. Like many newer "vampire" series, it takes previous vampire mythology and spins it to create something new. Anna is an excellent main character, a strong female, but not completely without frailty. She's the type of character that Anita Blake used to be, before she turned to just having sex with just about everyone (sorry, Anita Blake fans... I'm a fan too, just not of where t...more

An interesting introduction to a vampire series. Instead of the heroine being the non-vampire, for once, she IS the vampire. Attacked while trailing a bond jumper with her partner in her bounty hunter business, Anna finds herself transforming slowly into a vampire. A doctor takes an all-too-personal interest in her, revealing himself as a Night Watcher, a vampire who helps patrol his kind. Her struggles to find the vampire serial killer who turned her and protect her partner seemed real enou...more

Argh, this was just too dreadful, I couldn't get further than halfway. A really awful I-just-got-turned-into-a-vampire story. Honestly, the heroine meets a vampire who says he's going to guide her in the ways of vampires, blah blah blah, she falls in bed with him, wakes up the next morning thinking, "Woops! What about my boyfriend?" Then Mr Hunky Vampire walks past again and all thoughts of boyfriend disappear off the page as they leap into bed together. I didn't believe in this c...more

Laurell K. Hamilton fans, anyone who enjoys vampire stories
I discovered Jeanne C. Stein's latest release, The Watcher, at a bookstore in Richmond. I love vampire stories and am a big Laurell K. Hamilton fan, so Stein's book caught my eye. When I discovered she'd written two previous books for this series, I bought all three.
The Becoming is a quick and entertaining read. Stein establishes the "rules" of her vampire world early through the clever use of a vampire "mentor" to help the newly-turned bounty hunter, A...more

I want to say think LKH before she went to shit, but it's different than that. It was an almost refreshing look at vampires, but definately just an introduction to the tale. She leaves it so wide open with questions you beg for the next book in the series.
Anna isn't set out to kill vampires, she's just a regular joe-blow bounty hunter with her best friend David (who is a hot ex-football player) and rarely gets to see her boyfriend Max (who is an undercover operative for the DEA). But wh...more

I suppose this is considered Urban Fantasy, but I really don't care about shelving it correctly in my bookshelves here. Fantasy is fantasy.
I was pleasantly surprised at this book, which I just happened to pick up at the library. It's one of those that blurs the lines just enough between fantasy and reality that you almost believe that this could happen to you.
A fun, good read for the vampire-shapechanger lovers among us!

A surprisingly fun and engaging start to a series; captured me quickly with the fleet pace and storytelling, and learning about Anna's world right along with her as she is thrust into situations she doesn't know how to cope with as a newly turned vampire lends a refreshing spontaneity to the story, making it feel less like a history or cultural lesson.

I met this author at Comic Con this year. I was intrigued that her vampires were able to walk around in daylight. The main character,Anna, is likable, strong. I was able to relate to her easily.
The book is a quick read because you just can't put it down. I read A LOT of paranormal fiction and I will definitely continue to buy Stein's books.

I didn't think this series was going to be that great, but I ended up getting hooked. Don't get me wrong, I do like this series but I just figured it would be one of those that I would read once because it was interesting enough to hold my interest but not something I would keep around to reread one day. I can see myself reading this again though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I loved the independence and ingenuity of the main character and her “relationship” with her male counterpart was drastically different than most books in this genre. I had a hard time putting it down and I plan to order everything else from this author ASAP.

This is a super fun read! Anna Strong is turned into a vampire and must learn to use her new gifts wisely. It's not brilliantly written, but there is some good action and sex, and I liked Anna as a heroine. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I have to say this is one of the better books in this genre. I am hopelessly hooked on these, they are my guilty little pleasures. Good read, interesting characters, pretty good story that makes you want to read the next book just to see what happens.

I picked up this book based on seeing the author take part in a panel at Comic Con 2007. I liked the fact that she set the book in San Diego -- I recognized all of the places her character went it the book, which was cool.
