This is the first book I've read from Cheryl St. John, and it has left me wanting to read more of her books. I thought she did an excellent job of engaging me in a tender and beautiful love story. Kate had married Levi Cutter, but after a couple of weeks, he told her he needed to find a good job and would come back for her. After five months of his absence, his brother, Noah shows up to tell her that Levi was shot. Kate soon realizes that Levi had no intention of coming back to her since he was...more

Noah Cutter is one of my favorite heroes of all time. What a beautiful man and a beautiful love story.

I really liked this heartwarming and also intense romance between two people who were so perfect for each other. The story had me hooked from start and there were passages that moved me immensely. However, both the hero's and heroine's insecurities went on for a bit longer than I deemed necessary, thus creating undue frustration near the end. Also, a few issues I had with the plot's credibility kept me from rating it with 5 stars. Still, a very sweet and tender romance that I'm glad I r...more

An emotional read about a young pregnant widow taken in by her physically and emotionally scarred brother-in-law. Better than average writing and characterization. The author sets the scenes well and the dialog is smooth and natural. Both main characters are mistaken about the other one's motives, but the reasons behind the mistakes are believable (and not unkind), so the plot device works here. Although there was tension between Noah and Katherine, the author could have build more tension and g...more

Noah Cutter is surprised when he finds not only that his younger brother Levi has gotten himself killed but that he also left behind a wife he told no one about.

Driven by his sense of duty, Noah locates Katherine and finds her working at a laundry house, poor and pregnant and without the support of her mother. So, Noah does the honorable thing and asks her to come with him to his ranch, where she and the baby will be safe and provided for.

Katherine isn't sure if she can believe Noah, after all h...more

Excellent tear jerker book ,awesome story though i felt it was dragged a bit in between but still the whole book was awesome absolutely wonderful sweet well developed characters, plot is also so good and Noah's step mother was shown to be very mean, rude to Noah but it was also explained at the end ,one of my fav books

The story goes as Katherine (Kate), is abandoned by her husband (who married her basically because he wanted sex with her & she wasn't offering it without marriage). She's taken...more

HIS SECONDHAND WIFE is the second book in the Copper Creek series. SWEET ANNIE is the first. There is quite a bit to like about this story of Noah Cutter and his deceased brother's widow, Kate.

Levi Cutter, Kate's husband, was suppose to be looking for work. She hadn't seen him in several months. Noah claimed his body when he was shot dead. The reason? Another man had caught him with his wife. At the same time Levi had left a very much pregnant Kate alone.

Noah, who is severely scarred over most...more

She’d caught three more by the time she became distracted by the rising sun. “Have you ever seen anything equal?” she asked in a breathless voice.
He’d been comparing her impressive catch to his two small sunfish, but at her exclamation, Noah turned his gaze to the palette of color streaking the sky, then to Katherine’s face bathed in the golden glow of morning. “Never.”

First let me say the title was...rather cruel wasn't it? I sure don't want to be a Secondhand Wife, or to be called one.

Katherine's husband left her to go find work. Weeks turn into months and he doesn't come back home. Noah his brother comes one day to announce that her husband has been killed and that he will take her to his ranch. Soon Noah realizes that Kate is pregnant and offers to take care of her and the baby. Kate having no other options accepts this very generous offer from the silent scarred man.

His Secondhand Wife is a very sweet romance that brings two people who have always felt like outcasts togeth...more

I hope people who read my reviews do not get tired of me repeating my thoughts on how gifted Cheryl St. John is as a writer. This was a re-read for me and the very first book I read of Ms. St.John which was in June 2013. And even though it was part of a two book series in her Copper Country Brides series, as all her books could be read as a stand alone. She has characters that are shared from her first book, Sweet Annie, as their lives develop. Also, like the first, the strength of important lif...more

What I enjoyed most about this book is the relationship between Noah and Kate. They first meet when Noah seeks her out to inform her that her husband, his half-brother, has been killed. Kate is pregnant and working with her shrewish mother cleaning laundry in Boulder. Noah impulsively offers to let her live with him on his ranch to help get her out of her poverty and away from her critical mother. She readily accepts. Noah is horribly scarred and has been hiding from the world since he was 13 ye...more

4.5 stars.

This is the story of a naive woman who fell in love with a man who gave her many false promises. He leaves, telling her he's off to find a job, and five months later she gets the news that he's been shot by a man for sleeping with the man's wife. Unfortunately, she's pregnant. Her husband's brother, whose face and body is severely scarred, takes it upon himself to do the right thing and take her in so he can provide for her and his brother's child. What they didn't expect was that the...more

I wavered between a two and a three for this one. At best it's a run-of-the-mill beauty and the beast story that's entertains but brings nothing new to the table. At worst, it's a poorly written story that overuses POV prose, tells instead of shows and rehashes the fairly exasperating "angsty disabled/scarred hero consumed by self-loathing redeemed by endlessly patient and good Mary Sue heroine." The good characters are unconflicted and perfect while the bad characters are pure malice and outrag...more

When Noah goes to claim his brother's body after he was killed by the husband of one of the women he was carrying on with, Noah learns that his brother had a wife himself.
When he goes to tell his sister-in-law that she is now a widow, he learns she it pregnant and living hand-to-mouth, so he offers to take care of her and the baby.
Noah has avoided people ever since an accident when he was a teenager left him badly scarred.
I really liked the characters and the story, but the telling of it got a b...more

Good story, but the writing kept me from really enjoying it. It felt kind of choppy and the dialogue was stilted and sometimes awkward. I often felt the characters seemed to be speaking non sequiturs. Actions and words were written very straightforwardly which sort of took the emotion out of the book. Still, the romance was cute and I enjoyed the setting of Colorado in the 1890's.

I can't help but think this would have been a much pleasanter read without all of the 'woe is me'ing from Noah. When our hero spends 98% of the story feeling sorry for himself...

It is Beauty and the Beauty set in the Old West. Normally I would not read a Old West romance but I liked this one. Maybe because it was a beauty and beast tale. Noah suffered a horrific accident as a child that left him very scarred and ashamed to be seen by people. Katherine is his brother Levi's pregnant widow.

They are both adorable in their own ways. Katherine is very happy, sees beauty and wonder everywhere. She wants to be needed. She could have easily be mistaken for stupid. I think her...more

Update: August 4, 2013 (read on kindle) I first read this in December 2012 I believe.

My local library has this book in paperback. And now I have it on kindle, unfortunately it's not lendable.

I have been in a reading rut..yes, again and I decided to search through Amazon for some of my favorite themes.. I was even getting stuck thinking about what to search on, so I started looking at Cheryl St. John's books.

She's not someone I've read a lot, and I thought I might find a hidden gem. Nothing new...more

Good, sweet story with a "Beauty and the Beast" theme. There were some scenes where shadows and light played an important role and I could easily "see" all with my mind's eyes. It would make a beautiful movie.
