Only I saw Narian for who he truly was: a young man with courage and an independent mind, and made to pay for what was outside his control. He couldn't help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep-blue eyes pierced me and held me captive.

An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return...

Most people who pick up this book or series won't be looking for or expecting to find a pretty good story about politics and war, but this one is. There are quite a few impressively done scenes that has just the right tone and feel for a city and kingdom under seige by the enemy and the desperation comes right through. I can totally understand the frustration the main character, Alera, goes through since she's the leader of the place but unable to do anything about what's going on around her. Th...more

Yes, this is a sequel. I tried to avoid major spoilers and hide anything that might be spoilery, but you WILL get some spoilers for the first book.
Want to read my review of Legacy instead?

Did the writing improve?

Um, no.

The writing is pretty much exactly the same as the first book. Lots of useless information and sentences that say in twenty words what could easily have been said in ten. This frustrates me and I sigh about it an awful lot, but it's cle...more

A feel-good historical 'kingdom' romance that reads as a filler between novels more than a noteworthy story in its own right.

The main character is a well-wishing but not particularly good heroine who is given more credit than she deserves for courage and leadership ability. She frequently demonstrates the weakness of putting herself and her feelings before others' needs, and retaliates and sulks when others respond to her confused obstinacy in a way she does not like. Though she occasionally red...more

There is no question that Legacy left one of the most uncool cliffhangers that I have ever faced in the history of reading. Whether or not it served as a ploy to get readers to pick up the next installment, I must admit that I am glad that I gave Cayla Kluver another chance because Allegiance was absolutely heartbreakingly good in the sense that one character made the story come to life for me.

With the prospect of war looming between Hytanica and Cokyri, Cayla Kluver's Allegiance raises the stakes for its characters and has a darker feel than Legacy, the first book in the Legacy series. That said, Allegiance can kind of be divided into two parts: the slow first half which goes into excessive detail about Alera's daily life as queen – the writing still hasn't been tightened – and a more intense, exciting second half.

Alera remains as annoying as ever in Allegiance and makes me so happy...more

10/31/12 - Just finished it anticipating my copy of Sacrifice from the library - should get it in the next week. I felt the same as below...except I didn't mention how MUCH I LOVE LONDON! He is such a stud!

3/9/12 - So, I just put my life on hold so that I could read this. I started it last night, and just finished it.

So good, again, surprised that such a young person could write with such detail that makes you feel like you have dived into their world and are walking along with the characters....more

Kluver's writing has really progressed and I feel that Allegiance was a much more sophisticated read compared to Legacy. This book really took the characters to a new level. Where I began this book thinking that we would have the usually shallow, hated characters *cough*Steldor*cough*, we were simply lead to think the same way that Alera, the main characters was thinking. In Legacy she was young, she was inexperienced, and hadn't completely matured yet. Allegiance brings a new outlook for our her...more

Honestly I can not finish this book.

I am two chapters from the end and I cant deal with Alera's stupidity anymore!

"'Is there no one else?' I asked feeling ill-equipped to take this task" The high priestess gives her a chance to govern her kingdom again but she needs to think about it(WTF!?) I thought she wanted to be viewed as someone capable and equal to men.

Alera's attitude and thoughts in general are contradictive every few pages. Honestly its like looking into the mind of a selfish, idiot...more

I waited 3 years for this book to come out... I'll admit that I don't have that much love for the author because of that. However, this novel was worth the wait. It put me through plenty of emotional turmoil but the ending was prefect. *spoilers from this point onward* Now to details- 1st I actually got to love Steldor (or should I say Helldor?) in this book. He was a good husband and his family was adorable. His uncle easily became my favorite character when he offered Alera pants and free ridi...more

Urgh. There are so many things about this book that frustrated me! I mean really, REALLY frustrated me. I love the story and the world-building is amazing.

But Alera? Well, I would have stabbed her in the cave. The story would be much better off without her. The other characters (especially the Elite Guards) are all so well-developed and strong. I just don't understand why Alera is so mortifyingly annoying. She's passive, weak-minded, selfish and above all stupid. She allows her kingdom's destru...more

Allegiance by Cayla Kluver was released back in February. To say I was excited to read this sequel to her, Legacy, might very well be the understatement of the year. Here’s the synopsis from Amazon.com:

He couldn’t help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep blue eyes pierced me and held me captive. An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return…

I hated Alera. How could such a woman be so weak? So selfish? So incredibly useless and overcome by her own emotions that she fails to act for the good? I'm afraid that reading about her completely ruined the book for me, even though the book itself had an incredibly slow plot too caught up on the wrong things.

What exactly is wrong with Alera? Well, specific instances come to mind: She's freaking stuck on the wrong guy. I understand that she loves another person, but when you're the freaking que...more

I really liked this sequel. While it had been a while since I read the first book, I still enjoyed this one and was able to pick it up and not get lost in the story. I had forgotten about what had happened at the end of the last book with Narian, but it quickly came back as the story started. In this, I found myself not so much being on Narian's side when it came to Alera, but I actually started to hope she would fall in love with her new husband and king, Steldor. I found him much more honorabl...more

All right…just let me get this out of my system real quick…Steldor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UGH! Why am I always rooting for the losing team?
Moving on…

What an awesome follow up to the first book! Alera grew so much in this second novel. Even though I would have happily been with Steldor, I do understand her reasoning for not. The heart wants what the heart wants, and I was impressed with how she kept to her convictions and became stronger because of them. Girl power! I also appreciate that she is not per...more

I had mixed feelings about Legacy the first book in this trilogy, particularly disliking the ending, but when I had the opportunity to read this sequel, I found myself keen to find out what happened, and I’m pleased to say that Allegiance is a much better book than its predecessor. It is a moving story about a girls allegiance to her heart and her people.

I found the first book slow and disliked the selfish immaturity, stupidity and weakness of the main character, Princess Alera, who at seventee...more

I am so impressed when a person follows their dreams. That is just what 19 year old Cayla Kluver has done. She self-published, digitally released and internationally released her debut title LEGACY in thirteen countries before finally finding an American publisher to take notice. Born on October 2, 1992 in Wisconsin, she has cats, dogs and horses, and can be sometimes found tap dancing to her own beat. Oh yes, a dancer in her heart for sure. Cayla is an inspiring young adult that frequently trav...more

Note: This ARC was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

An intriguing tale of fantasy and adventure by young author Carla Kluver, Allegiance is actually my first novel of hers and certainly won’t be the last. Filled with magic, politics and a healthy dash of romance, this is another stunner from a rising star in writing.

At the beginning I was a tad apprehensive of Alera, I had mixed feelings about her and even thought she was a bit stiff. But as I turned the pages and...more

First Impressions: I read Legacy last year and I fell completely in love with it and I was just dying to get my hands on Allegiance. I had to know what would happen to Alera and Narian, especially. On top of that, the cover art is beautiful, and we all know I am a total sucker for pretty books! I’m usually not a huge fan of historical fiction, but something about these books just catches my attention like no other. Maybe it is just...more

This review is really a 4.5 stars. I enjoyed this story as much as Legacy, the writing was still exemplary, rich and absorbing while a darker tone took over the book towards the end as war engulfed Hytanica.

The only problems are with the story itself. Parts were slightly annoying and others had me cheering.

But firstly, lets talk about Alera. I still love her. I think she's completely inept at acting like a Queen, although when she is forced to head functions she does it well in a queenly manner....more

Notes: I reviewed an advanced copy eBook from the publisher.

Some people aspire to be a ruler, others are natural born leaders. Alera was the latter, born and bred from a line of Kings and Queens. The only thing holding her back from taking the reigns of her kingdom was that her people didn't believe a woman could lead. They were wrong, and she was forced to marry the man who they'd groomed to be the next ruler.

Narian looked to have all the traits associated with the Legend of the Bleeding Moon....more

I cannot ask more from this book. It was really a wonderful read, and I enjoyed every sentence of it. I’m amazed with the author’s skill in bringing the readers into the world full of magic, love, frustration and betrayal. Reading this book is like riding a roller coaster. A highly intense and emotional read at times, but not overdone. It gives hope to those who have none, and it taught one to perserve...more

Hmm .... I seem to be rooting for the wrong side of the love-triangles this month. It's very annoying! I guess I know how all the Jacob fans feel now.

This book was a lot better than the first one. Maybe part of it was that the story was already in motion so we could dive right in without having to set it all up (like in the first one). I also thought the action and intensity of the conflicts and battles were done really well.

This book ends fairly well. Without the little teaser at the end (an ep...more

Having enjoyed Ms. Kluver's first book, Legacy, I was excited to get my grubby paws on book two and find out how Alera was faring. And...okay...see how much of an ass her husband was being.

As with book one, Ms. Kluver manages to write of regal tasks and political intrigue in a way that grabs your attention and forces you to become addicted. I really, really had to know what was going to happen next. Watching Alera mature into her role was extremely satisfying. Despite her fears of being queen sh...more

I have to admit I requested Allegiance from NetGalley without realizing there was a book one to the series, so I'm sure my impressions will be different than others who are familiar with Legacy. The cover and book description pulled me in! Fans of the Girl of Fire and Thorns, Shannon Hale's Books of Bayern or Maria V Snyder's Study Series will enjoy this one. It's a mix of historical YA fiction and fantasy. The author published the first at age 17- holy moly folks! I was impressed after reading...more

Alera hängt natürlich nach wi...more

I rarely like the second book in trilogies. They generally feel like a bridge to get from the end of book one to the beginning of book three without anything happening. It usually feels like a waste of a full book when simply making books one and three just a little longer would have worked just fine.

Allegiance is nothing like that.

There is not one part of this book that felt like that. I could not stop reading. The only times I was forced to put the book down were driving home from the coffee s...more

First off, do not start a series without reading the first book. Just don’t do it. As I read this book, it became painfully obvious that I was missing a lot of emotions because I didn’t read Legacy. I had no idea about the passion and depth behind Alera and Narian’s relationship. So of course, I instantly started liking Steldor. (Gasp.) I couldn’t help it. Even with his chauvinistic views and mannerisms, I still liked him. Actually, I felt sorry for the way Alera always treated him. As the book...more

“What do you need?" I asked, sitting beside him and fumbling through the mishmash in my lap. "How about this?"
I examined a container and read the label.
"Will belladonna do?"
"That's a poison, dear.I'd prefer if you didn't give me that." Even with his ghastly injury, his dry humor survived.”

“I continued down the hallway, past the library, with my eyes downcast, not wanting to talk to anyone. So immersed was I in my misery that I recoiled at the sound of a male voice emanating from just a few paces in front of me.
"I know feet are fascinating, Alera, but it's much more sensible to pay attention to where you're going."
Steldor stood outside the door to our quarters wearing a cocky and irritating grin, and for the thousandth time that day, I felt myself turning crimson. I stared at him, struggling for a witty rejoinder but unable to produce one.
"Did you want something, my lord?" I finally asked, forcing a smile that felt like a grimace.
"I simply wanted to see my beautiful wife," he said, countenance still smug, although his eyes had softened and I suspected the compliment was sincere.”
