From political commentator, book author, and multimedia personality Farai Chideya comes an intense and darkly funny debut novel about a woman who learns what you stand to gain -- and lose -- if you follow your dreams of fame.

Sophie Maria Clare Lee doesn't have the resume of a rock star. She grew up a book-smart black girl in blue-collar Baltimore, then remade herself at Ha

I don’t remember where I first heard of Farai Chideya’s Kiss the Sky. I do know I had really high hopes for this story, of a woman struggling with herself and her music career. Sophie is the sort of character you initially want to root for: she’s divorced from her music partner, but they’ve found a way to co-exist — maybe they are even comfortable with their status. She’s got a cool job, at least when the book opens, and she’s willin...more

Interesting book. It started off kind of slowly, actually very slowly. To be honest, I picked this book up two times before but couldn't get past chapter 5. This time when I read it, I was determined to finish it and boy am I glad that I did. Chideya gives a lot of back story and really crafts out each character, especially the main character Sophie (aka Sky). You grow to know her and actually establish a connection with her as she is on her journey to not only super-stardom, but to dealing with...more

Let's see...where do I begin? Kiss the Sky is a well- and often beautifully-written book. The story of Sophie "Sky" Lee a 30-something rock singer, and her love affair with the ex-husband, the current boyfriend/manager, and of course, her music.

Sky is a very flawed character to say the least, she battles depression, alcoholism, drug use(typical of artists right?), and addiction to bad men and destructive behavior. I found myself rooting for her and frustrated with her at...more

I wanted to love this book, but ultimately found it just good. If 1/2 stars were possible, I would give it a 3.5; a B-. Some of the writing is clever, but overall the book did not keep me thinking about it for days afterward. It is an attractive story - girl meets boy rocker, gets caught up in getting world rocked - but the convention of naming chapters after song titles became trite and the characterizations were not super deep. Great rock tunes can be deep. So a really good rock novel should b...more

This book is written terribly, so bad that I couldn't get past more than 40 or so pages before putting it down for good. I expect fiction to be light and fluffy at times, but this is just awful. The conversations between characters are cliche at best, and the internal dialogue and narrative were bland.

I found this book on the clearance table at Borders. Though I often disagree with some of Chideya's opinions and comments on NPR, her storytelling and character building in this novel is ON POINT. Good chick-lit for any black woman who's attended private school and has had to survive and swing in many world views.
