I won this book from Goodreads' giveaways, so I was so excited about reading since the time I took it in my hand, since this is the first time I ever won a book. So finally almost 3 months later I got through the exams period and I picked it up!

The title comes from a movie term explaining how a scene suddenly changes from one scene to another that is totally unconnected. That is what happens in this book. The villain is a "poor little rich boy" who has no real life other than those movie characters that he emulates in his own life. The problem is the that the characters that he takes on are really bad characters.

I selected this book for #2 on my list because it had a movie theme which I thought was highly appropriate given my 50/50 challenge. Plus, I had the privilege of hearing Sandra Brown speak at DFWCon last year. I was so impressed by her that day that I rushed out of the auditorium, bought the book (yes, actual hard copy!) and stood in a really long line to have her autograph it. She is an amazing public speaker, and all around very nice person. If you get the chance, go meet her.

Sandra Brown is one of those authors that I forget about but then end up reading another book and thinking, man, I've got to read more of her books!
This book is very well-written, you aren't left bored or skimming the pages trying to get to something more interesting. The two main character's chemistry leaps off the page, and the story, while employing classic story elements, includes some interesting twists that you don't see coming at all! Another super book by Sandra Brown in "Smash Cut."This book kept you glued to the chair, to see what was going to happen.Love the characters that Sandra Brown brings to this story. The character of Creighton Wheeler starts out creepy and just keeps getting more psychotic as the story progresses. On the surface, the character of Derek Mitchell was just another defense attorney looking for fame and forturne. What a great book! I can always count on Sandra Brown to write a book that keeps me guessing and my heart pounding! I loved the hero of the book, Derek Mitchell. He was very sexy (in my mind anyway, I pictured him as being played by Matthew McConaughey!) and I loved the way he would take charge of the situation. And I loved how smart he was!

Defense Attorney Derek Mitchell is on a flight home from Paris when he encounters a stunning woman and eventually ends up joining the Mile High Club. Seeing her later at the baggage claim he gets a cold shoulder disappointed but still intrigued he continues home. When a wealthy business man is murdered in an apparent robbery in a hotel elevator, Derek is retained by the businessman’s brother to represent is family and protect them from perceived police harassment. When Derek meets the son, he d...more
Love the characters that Sandra Brown brings to this story. The character of Creighton Wheeler starts out creepy and just keeps getting more psychotic as the story progresses. And it was great to see the "hero" in a role other than a cop or FBI Agent. On the surface, the character of Derek Mitchell was just another defense attorney looking for fame and forturne. But as the story progressed you started to see the personal side of Derek and realize that he is a great guy. Lastly, th...more
What can I say? I was at an airport, facing 3 hours of flying and a couple of hours wait time in the Phoenix airport. Plus they have this new airport bookstore benefit, where you get 50% refund when you bring the book back. This is a horrible book. A wealthy man is murdered in an elevator with his supposed mistress Julie, and Derek, a defense attorney becomes involved with the elite family which includes the murdered man’s nephew. Creighton, a narcissist who just might be a psychopath. No care...more
I love all of Sandra Brown's novels and always recommend them. She knows what a reader likes, never takes long in bringing in the action; creates likable characters, smart dialogue, a few twists and the villain in this one was quite a piece of work! The enjoyment with her work is in the reading, she likes to shock you with events when you least expect it and Brown typically picks up the pace significantly towards the end. I find myself racing through the pages as it coalesces to the conclusion...more
A thoroughly enjoyable read. As another reviewer has previuosly said, I often forget how good this author is. Now I want to go and backread her stories.
This was a great thriller. Not so much a mystery as the reader knows fairly early on who the badguy is. But, IMO, this does not detract from being engrossed in the story, as the bad guy is such an arrogant so-n-so that you just want to see how he gets what he deserves.

Awesome book! It's been awhile since I've read Sandra Brown, but I need to pick up a couple more of her books. This one was really really good!
First of all, I read this book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down! It wasn't exactly what I would call a fast read, because I really had to pay attention to what was going on and couldn't skim over sections that didn't seem relevant. It was ALL relevant in this one! There were a couple nice twists within this fast moving mystery romance but on the whole, too much romantic passion and not enough passionate mystery. The killer is as annoying as he is evil and obviously guilty from the get go. His habit of spouting movie quotes wears thin really fast—especially since the lines chosen are mostly over-played before appearing in the story (first line quoted is the box of chocolates line from Forest Gump—knew I was in trouble at that point). Every description feel...more
Sandra Brown continues to be one of my favorite thriller authors. Derek Mitchell is a slimy defense attorney that wins most of his cases. Paul Wheeler of Wheeler Industries is a multi-billionaire who was recently murdered in a robbery gone bad in the elevator of a hotel with a woman, Julie Rutledge. Paul's nephew, Creighton, is a spoiled 30 year old that gets everything he wants. He refuses to be a part of the family business and has a strange love for horror movies. He quotes them all throughou...more
I've always loved Sandra Brown's novels and 'Smash Cut' is no exception. Starts off with Julie Rutledge, the owner of a successful art gallery and her weekly companion Paul Wheeler, CEO of Wheeler Enterprises. On one of their weekly jaunts out, Julie and Paul find themselves on an elevator leaving their hotel only to find when the doors open a masked man with a gun. Paul is the only one killed at the scene in Julie's arms. Derek Mitchell is a defense lawyer and a very successful one at that....more
Attorney Derek Mitchell and prime suspect Julie Rutledge pursue the truth behind the murder of a prominent Atlanta businessman. The story begins with a memorable meeting which drives the chemistry between the two leads. The villian's love for cinema and habit of quoting from movies comes across as cliche, perhaps intentionally, but still to the readers' irritation. Brown has made some progress over the years in shaping stronger female characters; while heroine Rutledge is far from ideal, she is ...more
My memory is short, but I believe that this is one of the author's better books. It starts of with a murder. While many books do, this one is a bit of a surprise, not expected, while the story weaves through not only twists but twisted intelligence that almost commits the perfect crime/s. I wanted to keep reading to see what would come next as the crime/s were trying to be solved. Then at the very end of the book comes a bit of an unexpected surprise (at least for me it was). I reccommend this b...more
I love absolutely everything that Sandra Brown does. Her heroes and heroines always have interesting occupations and, naturally, are smart, good-looking and don't take crap from anyone. I did wonder how the heroine, in the opening chapters, could compromise the hero in an airplane toilet to prevent him from representing her nemesis. She had no proof that the er...interlude took place.

Boring. Main characters were not likable or unique or developed. The character with the most development was the bad guy, who I didn't care about and found boring. There was WAY too much of Creighton. The plot was stupid and drawn out into a book when it could have been a five-page short story.
I liked Derek, mostly because he loved his dog so much...and then SB had to go and ruin that, of course. As for Julie...she was strange and annoying. Irrational, too. She wasn't likable, and I...more

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors when it comes to romance/mystery/suspense. Having said that, I was a bit disappointed this time. Sure...Julie had a secret to keep but come on...those secrets have to be shared when you are solving a murder mystery involving someone you love in the presence of a psychopathic killer. Creighton's character was creepy and well written but I just couldn't buy into Julie's character. The dialog was well written and the story was nicely paced. Although t...more

I really liked this book. True to Sandra Brown's writing, there were a lot of twists and turns. What struck me was she was able to describe the personality and traits of a truly evil person, including the fact that they could be just as charming and gracious as your ordinary next door neighbor and it is even better if the individual is extremely pleasant to the eye. I did not know what the title "Smash Cut" referenced, but did learn the meaning as described in the boo...more

What a fun, pulpy read! I've never read any traditional Sandra Brown before (her historical novel Rainwater was a nice diversion from her typical books), but if this is her regular style, count me in. Her genre is considered "romantic suspense", and I thought it had all the elements: a villain I ABSOLUTELY loved to hate (Creighton Wheeler, a rich, handsome, smug sociopath who is completely obsessed with movies), some hot chemistry between the two hot leads, some unique plot elements ...more
Another brilliant fiction story created from the mind of the talented Sandra Brown. Brown never fails to impress and this story could even make a fantastic blockbuster hit movie! I really liked the character of Creighton and the way that Brown describes his character from his guileless sparkling blue eyes to his taste for the finer things in life. Additionally, this story contains yet another heroine, also a plus, the elegant southern woman who saves the day. One of Sandra Brown's better novels ...more
Sandra Brown is a fantastic writer. This is a great book. The plot was great. The main characters were likable. I liked them, with the exception of Creighton, whom I don't think readers were supposed to like anyway! Everything about him was weird!

WOW - I hope this is a huge seller for her becuase I loved it! The characters were great (not that you really love them but you can't help but want to know what makes them go). The story line looks to be classic murder, suspected mistress and nephew heir are the possible suspects. Lots of money and family secrets, kind of an open and shut who done it with what you think will be an already over done storyline. NOT - New twists and turns at every corner, keeps you going from the moment you pic...more
I'm a fan of Sandra Brown and I'm really glad I am. This book definitely didn't disappoint. From the beginning, I was immediately thrown into the book. The characters were great, and I found myself worried that a couple of the characters that I had begun to like were indeed a "bad guy". Who wants to root for the bad guy?
The book takes you on many twists and turns, making you feel like you're right in the book with the characters playing the same game the "bad guy"...more

This suspense novel with a romantic subplot was an entertaining read. Though it certainly didn't break any new ground, I had fun running along with the main characters, seeing if/how the villain of the story would get what was coming to him. A reader who doesn't love movies might find the constant references to famous/infamous films a bit distracting (and even I thought it had the antagonist veering perilously close to a caricature), but since I'm a cinephile I didn't really mind.
