Gr 5-7 – The Dork Diaries details the life of 14 year old Nikki J. Maxwell over a period of 6 weeks. Nikki has been awarded a scholarship to the prestigious, private middle school, Westchester Country Day as a part of her father’s bug extermination contract with said school. Nikki’s angst as she deals with the school’s resident mean girl, her embarrassing parents, her crush on the hot boy and making new friends are all recorded alongside numerous sketches of her life. Although occasionally amusi...more
You will love Nikki Maxwell! Cute, cool & captivating!
The heroine of this YA story is eighth-grader Nikki Maxwell, a cute, cool and captivating girl you will fall in love with. Although the word cute is not a cool vocabulary choice for today's kids, I use it here because I love that word; it means much more than cool. To me it encompasses looks, personality and sincerity, while cool is...well "cool"...it can be a pose with some kids. So our NIkki is not only cool to her friends, she's also c...more

This is a really good book. I love this book every time I read it. I have read it at least twice, maybe more than that, I’m not quite sure.
The book is about a girl that just got transferred to a new school. The school was named WCD. The actual name of the school is Westchester County Day.
In the beginning of this story Nikki Maxwell, the main character, wanted a new cell phone. She wanted to fit in with the CCP group. This is the cute, cool, and popular group. She was pretty sure that everyon...more

I imagine this book is what would result if Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Mean Girls had a baby. Nikki has just started out at a brand new private school. She only got in because her dad did some exterminating for the school. She is desperate to become part of the popular crowd, which is hard since she doesn't shop at the hottest mall shops and her dad drives a van with a giant roach on top. Much like Greg from Wimpy Kid fame she tries several different ways to make sure that she joins the popular cr...more
Dork diaries is about a girl that is not popular at all and she has this huge crush on a guy that is just perfect. The mean girl is just making it to hard for her, first her locker is right next to her's... I don't think I can count how many insults she has said to her. Second: the mean asked Brandon to the dance but he said no, she still has a chance but sense Brandon wont go with her she canceled the dance ( her parents are paying for the dance sense they are rich) so it's up to her to save it...more
This is a lot of fun, though much less extreme than its obvious inspiration, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I almost can't stand to read Wimpy Kid because the narrator is so brilliantly unreliable and he is always doing such terrible things with no insight and having such terrible things happen to him. There are certain similar moments in Dork Diaries, as when our heroine-narrator has to ride in her father's exterminator-mobile with a giant, super-realistic plastic cockroach on the hood of the car, and w...more

A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Wow. LOVED. IT.
Well, to start off, it's about a dorky teen in eighth grade named Nikki Maxwell. She has two friends named Chloe and Zoey, whom she both met while on the job as a library shelf assistant (putting books back into their proper places on the shelves). She has a crush on the school reporter, Brandon Roberts, but feels like she's too lame for him to like her. There's a mean girl at her school, apparently the most popular, named MacKenzie Hollister, and the two are, prett...more

It's cute and charming, but that's it.
WRITING STYLE:
I love the Wimpy Kid Series, so I was expecting that it would work that way too, but it didn't. I mean the bias story telling is there, but the Jeff Kinney style was not there (or maybe something similar). Don't get me wrong, I like how Ms. Russell wrote this book. And cute drawings too.
PACE:
To be honest, I thought the story would have thousands of subplots, but it ended up just getting one. The pace is fast (It is expected to this kind of bo...more

Last year, these books were actually my favorite series. I enjoyed reading stories of a tee- aged girl, who had to go through numerous ups and downs due to her level of unpopularity. In addition, this other really popular girl HATES her with all her life. Staying in this school has become a problem fro Nikki since her father is actually a pest control guy with a truck that has a huge bug on top of the truck- another reason she hates her life in this school. And the worst part is that she is in th...more

I really like Dork Diaries, because it is a really funny book and love to read it. The main character named Nikki goes to a new high school where she has no friends and no chance of ever being popular. She enters in this big art competition to win the $500 grand prize and get a new cellphone to make her as popular as ever. Until a girl named Mackenzie tries to pull out of school and make her less popular. She finds 2 new friends named Cloe and Zoe who just put up books in the library to get out...more
I think this was a good book.! It was about a girl named Niki Maxwell who transferred to a new school. She didn't like it at first because she had no friends. Soon she found 2 great friends named Chloe and Zoey. There was a girl named Mackenzie that at first made Niki miserable, but in the end Niki tried to ignore Mackenzie so she had a better school year. She had a secret crush on a boy at her school, his name was Brandon Roberts, soon they became good friends. Niki also entered a drawing conte...more

These fly off the shelves in our middle school library. Frankly, for readers looking for a female counterpoint to Wimpy Kid or Big Nate, I guess this would work BUT it's not half as clever or funny as those titles. The protagonist, Nikki, is shallow. She's constantly worrying about her clothes and the popular girl's birthday party. She doesn't spend much time worrying about school or other worthwhile activities, although they're haphazardly thrown in as a cursory nod to a well-balanced life. Hon...more
A book that i have been reading over the summer is the Dork Diaries. in the one i have been reading its about a 14 year old girl named Nikki who is a little shy and naive. the few problems she runs into are 1 she is a good artist and wants to enter the art contest but the mean girl Mackenzie enters and makes her not want to enter. she also encounters a crush on a very popular boy and gets embarrassed by accidents that occur. along the way she makes 2 very good friends who in some cases you would...more
This book is SUPER! I first learned of this series when my friend bought this book to school. Enjoyable although I am not as old as Nikki Maxwell...but I am going to sixth grade. I will recommend it to anyone who likes diaries and wants to know how to write a good diary.(view spoiler) I think Mackenzie is really spoiled, and she may think that she is the one who rules the entire class or the Westchester Country Day(WCD) school. but Nikki is really enjoyable and she's a good f...more
This is obviously a quick cash-in on the Wimpy Kid craze, and it shows. Oh, it SHOWS. Though derivative, I honestly wouldn't have minded a Wimpy Kid from the female perspective, but then I remembered - we already have that in the Amelia series by Marissa Moss, which is much better written and illustrated, and not to mention heartfelt.
The Dork Diaries is painfully vapid and shallow, and our protagonist Nikki is not particularly likable. I'm really not a fan of how she blames popular Mean Girl Mac...more

After an intense month of reading novels with intercultural themes, I thought a break, in the form of chick lit might be warranted. Turns out, I don’t always have smart ideas. In my second week of delving into light reading, I’m already flipping pages just to get to the end of another dang book. This time my reading adventures led me to Dork Diaries by Rachel Russell, which I checked out because it was being touted as the girls’ equivalent to the Wimpy Kid series. The latter I am proud to share...more

With the success of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid, it was only inevitable that a girls' version of the popular series would appear. Nikki Maxwell is beginning eighth grade at her new private school Westchester Country Day and things could not be more horrible. She doesn't know anyone and she'll never have any hope of making friends if anybody finds out that the only reason she can afford to go to the school is because her dad has the school's extermination contract. But her mom gave her a j...more

The main characters of this book are Nikki a girl in middle school, Mackanzie a girl in middle school that always tries to embarrass Nikki, Brianna Nikki's sister, and Nikki's and Brianna' parents. The plot of this story is that Nikki was a wimp in the beggining of the school and turned out to become very popular. In the story Nikki is very embarrassed that she does not have a phone and she thinks that she is the only one the does not have a phone so she starts to sell a bunch of tatoos that sh...more
