This is a really good book. I love this book every time I read it. I have read it at least twice, maybe more than that, I’m not quite sure.

In the beginning of this story Nikki Maxwell, the main character, wanted a new cell phone. She wanted to fit in with the CCP group. This is the cute, cool, and popular group. She was pretty sure that everyone in the school had a cool phone. So she felt out of place here. So she bought an older, used phone off of eBay. The phone was only $12.99. But the phone was much bigger than Nikki wanted but she didn’t think that she could go wrong with this phone. So she went to school the next day and told everyone to let her know all of the juicy gossip on her New phone. Her New phone was a public pay phone that she put in her locker at school. Some of the girls from the CCP group were making fun of Nikki. Then her mom said that she had a surprise for Nikki. Nikki was excited When her mom told her that. She thought that her mom was getting her a new Iphone, but her mom really got her a diary. Nikki thought that her mom was brain dead.
Most of the time Nikki feels invisible.. She thinks her life sucks. She said that she was never going to write in her diary again, but then she does any way. She is not the kind of girl who curls up with a diary and a box of Godiva Chocolates to write a bunch of really sappy stuff about her dreamy boyfriend, her first kiss, or her overwhelming angst about the horrific discovery that she is a princess of a small French-speaking principality and now worth millions. She wondered around her new school like a zombie in lip gloss. Not a single person bothered to say hi to her. The only reason that Nikki is even at this school is because her dad got her a scholarship to WCD.
On September third, Nikki was freaking out because it is way past midnight and she is still doing homework. In Honors English Lit, she is supposed to be reading “A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare. This story is about a fairy named Puck, who tries to break up a really cute couple lost in an enchanted forest. Then this guy with a donkey head crashes a big fairy party and hooks up with their queen. The homework assignment was: 1. Would you consider Puck the protagonist of the play? Why or Why not? 2. How do Puck’s personality and actions set the mood of the play? 3. Use your imagination and provide either a detailed physical description or a drawing of Puck. Nikki thought of Nick Jonas, Corbin Bleu, and Justin Timberlake. She also thought about all of the names that Puck got called such as Puke, Schmuck, and Yuck. She felt bad for Puck.
Nikki has a little sister named Brianna. She is afraid of the tooth fairy because Nikki told her that the tooth fairy took all the teeth that little kids lost and made them into dentures. So now Nikki has to check the bathroom before Brianna will use the bathroom. Then one time Nikki was taking to long to go check the bathroom so Brianna had an accident right on Nikki’s bedroom floor. Nikki learned the hard way that Carpet Fresh doesn’t remove all odors. Then Nikki’s parents barge right in to Nikki’s room. All Nikki wants is a little privacy. Then she smarts off and says Hey! Why don’t y’all just move in?!
Nikki’s new issue of “That’s so Hot!” magazine says the secret to happiness is the four Fs: Friends, Fun, Fashion,& Flirting. Nikki says that the closest she has ever got to the four Fs is having a locker next to Mackenzie Hollister. Mackenzie is the most popular girl in the eighth grade. Nikki had to fight her way through the crowd just to get to her locker. Nikki had almost got trampled alive. Mackenzie had blond hair and blue eyes and was dressed like she had just left a photo shoot for the cover of “Teen Vogue.”
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is very Interesting, I love this book. It is a great book.

Dork diaries is about a girl that is not popular at all and she has this huge crush on a guy that is just perfect. The mean girl is just making it to hard for her, first her locker is right next to her's... I don't think I can count how many insults she has said to her. This is a lot of fun, though much less extreme than its obvious inspiration, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I almost can't stand to read Wimpy Kid because the narrator is so brilliantly unreliable and he is always doing such terrible things with no insight and having such terrible things happen to him. Without spoiling any major points, the plot is pretty much about a girl named Nikki Maxwell. Nikki is a "starving artist"(well, actually, she is just starving for a cellphone and cash to buy art supplies) who only wants to fit in with the popular kids. In her last school she wasn't so successful on that, but now, by rare and extraordinary circumstances, she is going to a brand-new school, Westchester Country Day Middle School. She has a locker next the most popular girl in school, Mackenzie. But don't think this is a story where the popular girl takes the underdog under her wing and shows the underdog that even though she isn't popular, she is still beautiful, no matter what.

If you were looking for that, go find another story.

Mackenzie is evil and hates Nikki's guts. She treats her like dirt, but Nikki doesn't fight back (because she is too scared to do so.) Anyway, there's an art competition coming up and both Nikki and Mackenzie are entering.

The "Diaries" part of the title? Nikki receives a journal from her mom (instead of a new phone), who says her daughter needs to "express herself" more.

When I read this book, I thought "Were was this when I was in middle school?!" (looking on the back cover later, I realized it came out when I was in eighth grade.)It was like reading my life story, only with minor differences. Even though Nikki and I were so much alike, there were moments were I would've fought the bratty mean girl, Mackenzie, until she cried for mercy (the stuff she does is really rotten and nothing was ever done about). And I would never allow my friends, who also want to be popular, make a roster of people (complete strangers) I, the artist , have to give "pen tattoos" to, even if it was for a good cause (the library).

People can learn from this book; the title of "Queen Bee" may sound awesome, but really, it's an insult. Queen Bees are ridiculously shallow (I say this from observations, experiences with some, and, of course, this book) who are "so full of themselves" and must have self-esteem problems because they seem to enjoy putting others down and harassing others for fun. (Note to the Good Queen Bees: Don't turn evil; Queen Bees started out like everyone else, but then turned nasty and mean. So please, stay true to yourself and your real friends and you'll go far in life.)

Everyone wants to be popular, but the question is: what are you willing to sacrifice for it? School cliques are going to shape you into something you're not and I believe this was executed this very well when Nikki's two best friends are greeted with the temptation of popularity.

To wrap up this review, I say that book should be read be all the girls of the World because they will get something out of this book. Parents, recommend it to your children, it's that good.The book's illustrations are good too. The cover art is a bit because the artwork inside is nicer.

Well, to start off, it's about a dorky teen in eighth grade named Nikki Maxwell. She has two friends named Chloe and Zoey, whom she both met while on the job as a library shelf assistant (putting books back into their proper places on the shelves). She has a crush on the school reporter, Brandon Roberts, but feels like she's too lame for him to like her. There's a mean girl at her school, apparently the most popular, named MacKenzie Hollister, and the two are, pretty much, archenemies.

Throughout the book, Nikki talks the reader through what happened in school that day, and all the drama caused at- whoops, forgot to introduce the school's name(!)- the prep school, Westchester Country Days. She talks about the person she is and the person she wants to be, how embarrassing her parents are, how unfair life is, etc. She dabs in some text lingo (that I suspiciously think she thought of herself). The story mostly wraps around an art competition called Avant-Garde Art.

MacKenzie and Nikki both apply for the competition, and pretty much the whole school believes Kenzie will win. She believes that herself, too, and continuously discourages Nikki and humiliates her. One day, to suck up to the librarian [insert name here] in order to be able to go to New York and get famous authors' autographs, Nikki give Chloe and Zoey cool tattoos she draws on herself (using a pen). The school then becomes interested in them, and other students apply to get them themselves. Donate books for a tattoo.

When the day of the art submission comes, Nikki rides to school in her dad's roach-car (Maxwell's extermination business thingy), yes the dreaded car she absolutely didn't want to be caught in, with her rad watercolor painting. MacKenzie comes out with paintings of mannequins in her dream fashion line, Fab-4-Ever, and snickers and sneers at Nikki when the watercolor painting is crushed under a tire of the roach-car. Kenzie proceeds to submit her art, while Nikki sits, devastated, out on the sidewalk, in the rain. She finally enters the school with Brandon, who miraculously finds her sitting outside, but when she finds graffiti saying "bug girl" on her locker, she decides it is the last straw, and plans to transfer. Just when her parents are finishing the transfer sheet, Nikki spots an entry.

The entry is titled "Student Body." By? Nikki Maxwell. It consists entirely of the tattoos Nikki drew onto the students before, and it is ranked NUMBER 1. NUMERO UNO. Later, in the janitor's closet Chloe and Zoey explained that they decided on the project, and entered it for Nikki, because the original painting was lost. The duo had worked on it for hours with Brandon. Nikki jokes about how she didn't get to see Kenzie's face, yadda yadda. Happy ending! Yay! But, yes, it does leave the reader with a mostly-satisfied, happy feeling, after reading the last page, where Brandon asks Nikki to work on a science lab with him and she answers.(less)

WRITING STYLE:
I love the Wimpy Kid Series, so I was expecting that it would work that way too, but it didn't. I mean the bias story telling is there, but the Jeff Kinney style was not there (or maybe something similar). Don't get me wrong, I like how Ms. Russell wrote this book. And cute drawings too.

This book is SUPER! I first learned of this series when my friend bought this book to school. Enjoyable although I am not as old as Nikki Maxwell...but I am going to sixth grade. This is obviously a quick cash-in on the Wimpy Kid craze, and it shows. Oh, it SHOWS. Though derivative, I honestly wouldn't have minded a Wimpy Kid from the female perspective, but then I remembered - we already have that in the Amelia series by Marissa Moss, which is much better written and illustrated, and not to mention heartfelt.

After an intense month of reading novels with intercultural themes, I thought a break, in the form of chick lit might be warranted. Turns out, I don’t always have smart ideas. In my second week of delving into light reading, I’m already flipping pages just to get to the end of another dang book. This time my reading adventures led me to Dork Diaries by Rachel Russell, which I checked out because it was being touted as the girls’ equivalent to the Wimpy Kid series. The latter I am proud to share...more After an intense month of reading novels with intercultural themes, I thought a break, in the form of chick lit might be warranted. Turns out, I don’t always have smart ideas. In my second week of delving into light reading, I’m already flipping pages just to get to the end of another dang book. This time my reading adventures led me to Dork Diaries by Rachel Russell, which I checked out because it was being touted as the girls’ equivalent to the Wimpy Kid series. The latter I am proud to share with my students. As for Dork Diaries, the first book in the series was such a bore that I won’t be reading any further.

The first reason I don’t like Dork Diariess is the paint-by-numbers plot. It’s all about Nikki, who wants to be popular but is a dork. She desperately wants to be asked out by cute-guy Brandon, but thinks he is unaware of her existence. And oh, by the way, mean-girl Mackenzie hates Nikki’s guts. If you think this plot sounds anything like Baby Mouse, which I reviewed last week, give yourself a pat on the back. If you think the plot sounds anything like half the chick-lit books you have read in the last year or in your lifetime, you now know why I was so eager for Dork Diaries to end.

In all fairness, I’ll admit there are some scenes between Nikki and Mackenzie that I halfway liked. For example, there is school Halloween dance. Although it came as no surprise that Mackenzie was voted chairperson for it, she did manage to temporarily shock a few people with her emotional resignation from the position. However, it soon became apparent, when all of Mackenzie’s friends also immediately quit, that she had an evil plan. You see, Mackenzie apparently has rich sponsors that enable her to afford to pay for an extravagant party. Yes, the clichés keep coming. Anyway, while I found this psychotic meanness on Mackenzie’s part over-the-top, I kind of enjoyed watching Nikki and her friends figure out how to save the day. If you think that revelation is a spoiler, I bet you can guess for yourself who asks Nikki to the dance.

The second reason I don’t like Dork Diaries is the main character. Even though author Rachel Russell didn’t exactly write in run-on sentences, I still felt as if as if Nikki would never shut up. Yes, Nikki is the main character and so should narrate the story, but most of the time she just endlessly spews random complaints with no basis in reality. Why does Nikki call herself a dork? She has loyal friends, gets attention from at least one guy, and likes to shop and party. Why does she ever doubt Brandon will ask her out? At the very least, why does she think he’ll ask out Mackenzie? He hangs around with Nikki, talks with Nikki, and acts like Nikki’s friend. Not once does he ever seriously talk to Mackenzie. Last, why does Mackenzie’s life revolve around ridiculing Nikki?

There are chick lit books which I love, such as My Unfair Godmother by Janette Rallison which differs from Dork Diaries on so many levels. For one thing, the main character gets herself into scrapes of her own making and then gets herself out of them by learning some lessons about sisters, boys, love, and life. As for the Wimpy Kid series, to which the Dork Diaries are compared, Greg might sometimes be a jerk but somehow his life feels a whole lot truer than Nikki’s.(less)

The main characters of this book are Nikki a girl in middle school, Mackanzie a girl in middle school that always tries to embarrass Nikki, Brianna Nikki's sister, and Nikki's and Brianna' parents. Seguro que lo que pensarás al ver la portada del libro es otros diarios muy populares que andan por el mercado, pero déjame decirte que Nikki logra realmente sobresalir.

Claro que, éste es más un libro de chicas, contrario a otros diarios que pueden tener un público dual. Nikki es una chica de 14 años, que llega a un nuevo colegio por a una beca que recibió gracias al trabajo de su padre, el cual no es nada glamoroso.

Como es lógico, Nikki se muere por un iPhone, si a su madre no se le hubiera secado el cerebro, seguro que le hubiese regalado un celular y no un diario. Ahora la pobre Nikki no sólo ha contraído sincelulitis :S sino que su casillero está al lado de la siempre perfecta-mega-fashion Mackenzie. La misma que quiere a Brandon (el no-es-mi-chico-aunque-me-encantaría de Nikki) y que ha pregonado a los cuatro vientos que participará en el Certamen de Arte de Vanguardia :O

Y desde luego, Nikki tendrá que decir entre ser una gallina o una campeona. Bueno, no es difícil adivinar cual ha elegido...

Salvo que ésta es Nikki J. Maxwell y es de todo menos predecible...

No tienen idea de lo mucho que disfruté este libro. Estaba un poco asustada porque justó terminé de leer otro diario que aunque divertido, no me dejó claro el propósito del mismo. Así que imagínense lo mucho que me frustraron las primeras páginas de este diario, pues me parecían un tanto lentos; lo mejor de todo es que el ritmo va en aumento y llega un momento en que no solo no quieres dejarlo, sino que seguro te sueltas una o dos carcajadas.

Nikki es un personaje súper fresco, con una voz muy de la edad que representa. Es una chica inteligente, que está buscando adaptarse a su nueva escuela, intentando hacer nuevos amigos y encajar en un mundo donde siente que es el patito feo.

A lo largo de la historia hay un crecimiento de su personaje y sobre todo una madurez en Nikki, una confianza en sí misma que te deja asombrada. Otra cosa que adoré fueron los personajes secundarios: Chloe, Zoey y Brandon. Sobre todo éste último me dejó con un enorme suspiro ¡y fíjense lo chiquitín que está!

Creo que El diario de Nikki es un libro que recomendaría para esos jóvenes lectores que andan en busca de algo divertido y con mucha sustancia. Y recomendable para los papás que gustan de regalar libros de calidad a sus hijos. Sin duda la segunda novela de la serie traerá muchas sorpresas.(less)
