I’m usually a sucker for time travel romance. That’s why with her first book, Master of the Highlands, I wanted to read Veronica Wolff. Unfortunately, that book and her second, Sword of the Highlands, didn’t quite work for me. I usually give an author a second try after a stumbling start, but because she’s giving me time travel, I tried a third time for Ms. Wolff. I am so very glad I did.

Haley Fitzpatrick is a graduate student who has a fellowship co-funded by the Historical Department and the Department of Celtic Languages at her grad school. Haley is a lover of everything to do with seventeenth-century Scottish weapons, even though she is studying the Scottish Reformation-era for her dissertation. One such weapon has caught her eye; it looks like a dagger but is actually a combination weapon, a spear that can shoot bullets. There is an inscription on the hilt for someone named...more
I really enjoyed this book - the author didn't try to make the time travel too scientific, and the main characters were both believable and likable. The historical aspect of the book was relatively accurate, if a little light - and the interaction between the heroine and the hero's sister, in particular, did an excellent job of explaining Haley's appeal to Alasdair. The only part that could have been improved was the interaction between the two main characters - there just wasn't enough of it. I...more
Hmm. Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I didn't love this book. I'm not sure why I keep trying Wolff, but I get less impressed with each one. I can't say I really felt for either main character, the plot lines reminded me very much of the previous book, and after the first half, I just kept reading for the sake of finishing it. Oh, well.

Recommends it for:
anyone who loves Scotland and Highland men
This is book 2 of this time-traveling series. Another great installment. Haley is a terrific heroine from Boston transported to 1646 Scotland. MacColla is a rugged Highlander warring with a neighboring clan who are set on totally eradicating his family tree. This book had me reading til 1 am because I just couldn't put it down. EXCELLENT.
Modern day Bostonian woman Haley Fitzpatrick goes back in time to 1646 Scotland and finds the love of her life Alasdair MacColla. Very good story and what makes it stand out from other time travel novels is that Haley is doing her dissertation on seventeenth century weapons, she knows enough to be able to help out.
I loved this book!! The time travel was pretty unbelievable but soon forgotten. The romance was so tender and loving. Everything I want in a romance. the Epilogue was the greatest~!
The chapters were short, the story went fast. There was some history, but because of the short chapters, it didn’t drag the story. The secondary characters did not ruin the story and even the chapters covering the villain did not drag.
Alasdair MacColla is my #10 best hero!!
BEST USE OF: A witch, sand and the Gaelic lang...more

I find that her style is not my cup of tea. I always love time-travel romance but this book, I'm not impressed.

Great read! Two people who find each other against million to one odds, fall in love and stay in love. Good happily ever after adds to the 4 star review.
Review Coming!
Wow this book was BORING, I've never been so dissinterested in a novel before, but of course I gave it the benefit of the doubt and read it till the end where I was not rewarded for my troubles. Im so dissapointed as I read a whole heap of reviews that this book was great. The One Star is for the lickable cover
Bk. 3, MacColla and Haley, another good read, though not as infamous historically as the previous 2 books.

Once upon a time there was a girl. She liked horses and Shaun Cassidy and Gunne Sax dresses, like many of the other girls her age. She had a big, loving family and, since their dad was in the Navy, they moved around. A lot. She was shy, though, and generally preferred a day spent in the company of her Trixie Belden books to running around with the other kids, whom she really didn’t know very well...more
