Set in the early 1600's this tale tells of Jack, at sea with his father a navigator before maps are generally available and Jack's dad's notebook, called a rutter is violently pursued, leaving Jack an orphan on the coast of Japan. He is taken into the home of a samurai where he slowly learns Japanese and the mysterious ways of his new land. Intrigue imperils Jack as he attempts to make his way. There is a great deal about honor, grief, jealousy, despair, and redemption. Sometimes didactic yet th

In 1611, a British merchant ship bound for “the Japans” is attacked by ninjas, and the lone survivor, 12-year-old Jack Fletcher, is taken into the home of a revered samurai. After dispensing with Jack’s initial sense of being lost in a new culture, the story dives directly into what teenaged boys will be looking for: fighting, and lots of it. The action comes fast, and Bradford writes with the authority of a black belt—which he happens to be—and a genuine respect for the subjec More...

By Chris Bradford, Young Samurai, The Way of the Warrior. Jack Fletcher is a young English boy who, with his father, has been sailing to the unknown land of Japan. After a shipwreck and a pirate-ninja attack, all Jack has left is his father's rutter—a priceless book of extremely accurate maps and charts. When Jack is taken in by Masamoto-sama, one of the most revered samurai in Japan, he learns that Dragon Eye, one of the pirates, is after the rutter. However, Jack's worries do not stop there. W

Okay, so the Young Samurai is Harry Potter with an historical setting and a couple hundred fewer pages. YA readers won't care. The story is every adventure loving kid's fantasy. Set in Shogun era Japan of the late 1500's, Jack is a rigging monkey on his father's ship. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Jack ends up in the Sea of Japan, is rescued by a samurai and sent to an elite samurai training sshool. Of course, it turns out the pirate attack wasn't random, Jack has something the pirates a

The Young Samurai books are aimed at the same audience, more or less, as Harry Potter. They are adventure stories, involving a 12+ year old boy thrust into an alien culture and a challenging new school, experience conflicts both with some fellow students and outside antagonists.
That's about where the parallels end. Bradford is a good writer, deeply familiar with Japanese customs and martial arts, and can draw on real 16th century Japanese culture for the background of his books (ho More...

Review written by my 12 year old brother
For the past two years, Jack Fletcher has been a rigging monkey on a British ship. Jack's father, the ship's navigator, has been teaching him all he know-hows, through his Rutter - a very valuable book of maps, charts, and notes on all uncharted lands and oceans. While searching for a mysterious land known as the Japans, a fierce storm forces the ship onto a dangerous bay open to both ninja and samurai attacks. After fixing the ship and head More...

In this swashbuckling adventure story by first-time British author Chris Bradford, we meet young Jack Fletcher, 12, who finds himself alone in Japan in 1609 when all his shipmates, including his father, are killed by ninja pirates. At this time the Portuguese were the only Westerners who had found the route to Japan, and Jack manages to salvage from the ship his father’s rutter, which contains all the ocean charts, an incredibly valuable resource for whoever has the rutter in his possession. This book is about a young boy named Jack, whose father works as a pilot on board the Alexandria, an English trading ship. After Jack's mother dies, his father takes Jack on the ship, and they set sail for Japan, hoping to be the first English ship to reach the mythic islands.
Just short of their destination, a sudden storm comes up, and the ship and its crew are forced to take shelter in a small cove. Shortly thereafter, the wacko Ninja Pirates attack the sip, killing everyone

Disney is putting a lot of money into this book. My guess is they're seeing the potential to assume the power vacuum left vacant by the demise of Potter.
And why not compare this book to Potter? it's got an orphaned protagonist (Jack Fletcher) in a foreign land, exotic locales, and a school setting full of beauty and danger, history and magic. it's also got an evil antagonist that killed Jack's father.

I wish I were the first to notice, but alas, it's obvious and has been noted by others -- author Chris Bradford was channeling Harold Potter when he wrote this book. Replace orphan Harry with orphan Jack Fletcher, moving from Muggle Land to Wizardry with moving from England to feudal Japan (thanks to a shipwreck). In place of Dumbledore, insert Masamoto, Master Samurai, and swap Hogwarts for Niten Ichi Ryu, a venerable school populated not with good and evil professors but with good and evil s

I'm going to come straight out and say I'm immensely excited to be reviewing the Young Samurai books, this is a massive undertaking for me because these books are the only books so far that have come close to stirring in me the same feelings that Harry Potter did so I want to do them justice. So, I'm getting the spurting on about how much I love the books over right now so you might actually get to read about why, to me, The Way Of The Warrior is such a great book. Here we go: I LOVE YOUNG SAMUR

Finished this in the car today.
As I mentioned in an earlier comment, it took me a little to get into the story, the pace/feel was off until about chapter five. Once the story started to pick up I was pulled in.
The POV hero, Jack, grows on you after a while, and once he starts to learn about the Japanese, the Samurai, and the second chance of life that has been placed in front of him, he becomes interesting.

When Jack is shipwrecked in Japan in the early 1600s he is able to save the rutter of his father, a pilot for the ship trying to trade in Japan. The rutter lists sailing routes and navigation notes and in the days before maps it is an invaluable resource. Jt is also a necessary resource to ensure Jack’s return to his native England. He is saved by a samurai lord and although he is instructed in the way of bushido being a foreigner sets him up as a target for other students of his lord. In ad

Parts of this book moved quickly with fast-paced scenes, the likes of which you’ve probably seen in Karate Kid. Other parts dragged, perhaps in attempt to emphasize the customs of 17th century Japan and the Zen-like philosophy of martial arts samurai. Jack Fletcher is a rigging-monkey aboard his father’s British merchant vessel. After his ship crashes upon the shores of Japan, it is quickly attacked by silent ninjas. The entire crew is killed, and Jack witnesses his father’s murder at the ha

The book "The Young Samurai, Way of the Warrior" is a story set in the 17th century about a boy called Jack Fletcher who was shipwrecked after a surprise attack from ninja pirates on his fathers ship off the coast of Japan. In Japan he meets a samurai master called Masimoto. Masimoto guides Jack and helps him in his time of need. The overall book of the "Young Samurai" is a quite interesting book and it shows the steps Jack has to take to adapt to living in Japan. The book is

A young English boy of twelve finds himself stranded in Japan after his father is murdered by a ninja pirate. He is then adopted by Masamoto who is a samurai warrior and head of a school teaching students the “Way of the Warrior”. Faced with learning a new culture, a new language and a new discipline, Jack confronts problem after problem to begin his journey to avenge his father’s death. This is a page turner to engage both genders, and readers older or young. It gives us a glimpse into histo

Here is another entry in one of my favorite genres - samurai fantasy. This is a good introduction for kids not already steeped in this tradition. It's the 1600's and Jack is aboard an English ship bound for the Japans. When the ship is damaged in a storm, Japanese pirates overrun it and kill all of the crew except for Jack because he is a child. Jack is taken to the home of a prominent samurai where he learns Japanese and begins training to become a samurai - which all sounds far-fetched but

This book is action packed, even the first chapter has graphic descriptions of someone dying. Because of the Japanese setting, the story is based around an English boy trying to become a Samurai.
Jack, the English boy, is now alone due to his fathers death (by ninjas).
He is on the other side of the world without a clue about the culture or language. Thankfully, a Samurai takes him under his wing, and Jack is now taking part in a school competition, however dangerous it could be.

One of the best books have ever read. It's about a British sailor named Jack who gets attacked by pirates on the coast of Japan. Jack, the only survivor is saved by a samurai named Masamoto who then trains Jack to be a samurai. The characters all are great my favorite is Jack, because I can relate to him. What kind of annoys me is everyone in Jack's family is dead except his sister, and the whole book he wants to go home and be with her. It's not that I don't understand that and I know this soun

I loved this book! 4.5 Stars! The starting was particularly boring but one they landed in Japan, the book became scaringly gripping and action-packed. It made me love Japan, Samurai and Ninja's! It was actually because of this book, I joined Taijutsu classes and it has blossomed my love for Martial Arts. I read all the other books and it was amazing.
