I believe im not the only person that thinks that the Percy Jackson series is totally awesome. And yes, I did enjoy this book. The extra knowledge about the gods and the different authors take in the series was interesting. But.. It seemed to me that the authors over-anylized the series a bit too much. They all claimed that rick riordan is a genious for coming up with these extravegent (spelling?) plots and details, and of course, I do think Mr Riordan is a geneous, but not in the ways that they...more

The Percy Jackson books are some of the best middle grade fiction I’ve ever read, and I think Rick Riordan is a god in his own right. He owns that market, and it is well deserved. When SmartPop offered to send me some of their catalog for review, I jumped at the chance to read other authors’ thoughts on Percy and friends. It was a nice book, the essays weren't particularly exciting or well written (not all of them but a few). It was great for discussions and some though provoking questions.
The book description is definitely not misleading at all. I also didn't think it was disappointing. The description and cover told you that this was NOT all written by Rick Riordan which told me I might not like the writing style of some of these writers. If you don't come with an open-mind with this book, you will ...more

The product description is purposefully a touch misleading. This is really a collection of essays by other young adult authors discussing various aspects of the setting and writing and deriving lessons and discussion topics for young adults. There is no additional fleshing out of the setting through stories or fiction. Not all of the descriptions of this book make it clear and it was especially hard to get to the truth of the content from the kindle description. Some of the essays were interesti...more
I found the author's introduction endearing, how he created Percy Jackson in order to validate his second grader's ADHD and dyslexia-- that they had divine origins. This section is one I think I will use in further teaching, it explains how and why myths are inherent to our society and the relationships between authors and their own texts as well as the ones they analyze.
Ok, so that was about the best part of any of the essays. I did find the glossary of mythological people and p...more

I found this book disappointing. I absolutely love the Percy Jackson series, but this seemed to me to be rather poorly written, loosely organized essays written for young readers who wouldn't notice the difference. Every once in a while, I would smile or come across a new idea, but not often enough. The forward by Riordan about how he got the idea for the series was by far the best part. This one is for die hard fans only.
This was far more interesting in concept than in execution. I leafed around, dipping in and reading a bit, flipping through and reading a bit more. I didn't find much to hold me save Riordan's introduction, which was funny and interesting. There might be more meat here for teachers than for the average reader like me. I just couldn't find anything that was compelling enough to read.
Good reference book to keep in my classroom, but not a page-turner by any means. A few really interesting essays (re Dionysus as camp director, role of disabilities in the stories), but too many essays that say "HEY maybe that homeless guy is a Greek god!" Solid glossary of Greek mythological gods/creatures at end of book.
A series of essays about the Percy Jackson series from various YA authors. As always with essay collections, some were better than others. I really liked "Why So Many Monsters Go Into Retail" and "Percy, I am Your Father. Some others read like middle school language arts papers. Good but not great. Fun for fans.
Not quite sure how I should rate companion books, so I guess for each, if I really enjoyed it, a four? Not as much a three? I like most companion books anyway. SO yeah, had a fun time with this one
It's a book of essays on a book series. NOT EVEN GOOD ESSAYS!
One of the essay's says
'now I am to the point of this essay'
OMGS! yes I am a dedicated Rick Riordan fan and I thought it would be kind of cool to read about what other published authors thought about the excelent series.

Very informing! It tells you everthing you need to know about the gods, being a demigod, how to recognize a monster and which gods are the best parents. I really liked this book!
This book was a bit above (intellectually) where I expected it to be. My 9 year old loves the actual stories but I didn't even bother encouraging him to read the essays written about the books. I thought there would be a lot he wouldn't understand and would get bored (and he's an exceptional reader). Maybe a middle schooler or high schooler? The essays were a lot lighter than most I read while studying English so I think they would be an excellent introduction to annalytical writing for olde...more
I love any Percy Jackson book. But I almost found this one a little to factual.
I definitely enjoyed reading the author's comments at the beginning and the first couple essays, but I got bored by the time I got to the last few essays. The love the concept though - different opinions on the series - and I already have my eye on the book on the Twilight series. That should be interesting.
This is terriblee!!!! dont ever read this!! negative starss!
Was kind of boring but a bit interesting…i geuss

Demi-Gods and Monsters is shorts stories by various authors. Each story is about the main characters, Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood and Percy Jackson; the stories are the same too.
At the end of the book it had a glossary about each god and what they did. Most of the stories made no sense because it started out from a introduction from Rick Riordan and then went to other authors who I never heard of I like Rick Riordan as a single author not multiple. This book is a should not read.

I have to say that I really didn't like this book at all. It took me a little bit to read. I kept skipping parts because they weren't interesting at all. My favorite part was the glossary at the end, explaining all the greek gods, heroes and etc... Basically this book is other authors writing pieces about the Percy Jackson series. It really wasn't interesting at all only a couple were okay.
I don't suggest reading this, but if you want to try reading it you can go right ahead. lol =]
