This one was on my TBR shelves so long I had to buy the updated edition. As you may imagine, the Islamic world has changed a lot since 1988! This is a comprehensive history and analysis of Islam, readable but definitely academic in tone. For those like myself who know nothing about Islam it gets confusing. The author tends to use an Arabic word and not explain what it means till several paragraphs later.
