adolescents, anyone wanting a literate, well-written adventure story
I really connect with David Grossman's work, both fiction and non-fiction-- Yellow Wind was groundbreaking and is still relevant in its treatment of the Israeli Palestinian situation. "Someone" is an adventure story, one that would be a wonderful book for a young adult. I loved it. Elements of fantasy and Dickensian characterizations keep things moving on several planes. At its heart is a coming-of-age story (from two protagonists, one male, one female) that, I believe, would be de...more

Curiosity and commitment can make us go through great pains in order to help someone, a close person or someone you just heard of. As an adult I felt the story was partly too "teenage". I also always feel irritated by the author´s way of describing sweaty bodies (mainly in his other books). Now to the good sides: the start and the part of the dog are great, guiding us through the events and through the town which is one of the most beautiful I´ve seen. I actually read it in Swedish b...more

I loved this book. Such an interesting premise. Far fetched, did someone say? I don't care. The main character is wonderful, and the Jerusalem scenes of the lives of street kids are gripping. Beautifully written. David Grossman, well known and regarded in Israel, wasn't familiar to me. He doesn't seem to be well known in the USA. Take a chance on this one! (I actually read this one twice -- once a year or two ago on the recommendation of my son, and now again as it was accepted as the subject of...more

It's always interesting for me to read books by Israeli authors about non-religious Jews in Israel. It's a segment of society that's a little closer to my experience than usual, yet still sufficiently different to provide interesting perspectives.
I had my criticisms -- the foreshadowing was a little heavy-handed at times, and the plot had some unrealistic aspects -- but mainly, this book was gripping, in a word. The whole "Oliver Twist"-like concept of drafting kids to create a...more

Holy crap I love this book. Set in Jerusalem Israel in the late '90s [ish] Assaf is home alone for a while while his parents visit his sister in America. He gets hooked into the mystery of the story when he meets a stray yellow Labrador retriever. At the same time, on the other side of the city, Tamar is singing for her life on the streets of Jerusalem, trying to rescue her drug addicted friend from the seedy and seething underworld of Jerusalem. I have re-read this book multiple times. It ...more

terrific book -- lovable characters and a great adventure story. plus, it gives a wonderful flavor of modern Jerusalem. the end is a little lame, but the book is completely engaging and wonderful (and it was just made into a pretty good movie in Israel)

One of the other top five picks of my book club. A wonderful tale with the narrator switching between two teenagers in modern day Jerusalem. Heartfelt and poignant with incredible writing and unforgettable characters.

This is my favorite contemporary Israeli work. Really powerful storytelling that unfolds different threads, slowly revealing deeper layers of each character. A great read.

My only disappointment with David Grossman, but I guess others loved it. It was made into a film...

A strange love story of two teenagers - and one missing dog - on the run in in Jerusalem.

Seemingly simplistic storyline... but just wait! I couldn't put this book down!
