"Who dares wins" -- that's the famous SAS motto. Well, the Marquis de Mores surely dared, but he did not win. A raging manic, he did not want for ambition or energy, but success eluded him across several continents and many fields of endeavor.

A Frenchman of dubious nobility, he'd found himself a rich wife, and set upon making his fortune in cattle in the 1880s in the Dakotas. It didn't quite work out:
