recommends it for:
anyone who ever won (or lost ) a playground fight
great slang, great swearing, tight plot - a splendid holiday read.
very sharp on the short lifetime of the vernacular in schools - I'm old enough to remember the arrival and departure of "is it chook" as an expression of disbelief, and smiled fondly on seeing it in print.
and I have absolutely avoided spoilers - just read and go with the flow!

If there were such a thing as a beach read for fans of British mystery novels, this is it. Funny but not too light. Entertaining parallel stories, one of neighborhood kids growing up together at school and the other involving a crime which connects those kids again as adults.

Not my favorite Brookmyre book, but good. There were a few too many characters (with multiple nicknames) so it made it a little tough to keep track of, but I loved the glimpse into 1980s Scottish school life.

Meh. It's well written as usual, but I just can't get into the characters, despite the fact that it's all chatacters and no action. Stick to Parlabane!

Not the best Brookmyre, hard to keep up with all the characters through the flashbacks.
