"How one thinks about scarcity, property, work, and needs cannot remain unchanged after reading this book. Most Christian reflection on the economy has been in terms of social ethics and has focused on inequitable distribution of jobs and goods in the market economy. Meeks writes on the economy as a Trinitarian theologian, and a very good one. The result is a more searchin ...more

A fabulous book written by a much-admired professor that explicates God's interactions with the economy, specifically the market system. Meeks' discussion of "oikos" was particularly poignant for me and the idea of "access ...more

Meeks obviously knows his stuff, not only about theology but also about economics. This is a well-done Trinitarian critique of current market society, and even though it's several decades old, it feels very relevant and contemporary. While it is very critical of market society, there is a gap where perhaps suggestions for practical solutions that churches can enact could've gone.
