Guide: a thing that helps someone to form an opinion or make a decision or calculation.
Unfortunately, I do not believe that this book was so much a guide, as a collection of random examples of financial tools.
I thought that having "The Economist" on the cover would mean this book would at least be useful in improving on existing knowledge of financial markets. This book made me realize that: 1. I have never been properly informed about financial markets while studying economics and/or 2. Authors

So dull it just sort of slid off my mind like advice off a teenager.
In fairness, I think it was the subject matter's fault though, not the author's, so I'm not rating it. I'll leave that to someone with more stamina.

Since the objective of the book covers a broad scope of markets, it follows that the author is unable to delve into the depth of any of them properly. The book is a lot of transient statistics that you won't remember and are probably irrelevant by the time you read this book. Furthermore, banking systems are highly differentiated in various countries. What applies to the USA may not apply to you at all. The section on foreign exchange markets was intriguing but everything else was bland . I foun ...more

A fantastic book if you're after a quick guide to financial markets. I've been working within this space for a while now yet there were some simple products/strategies that i'd never looked for a definition of. With this book i've found out not only how markets have evolved but also some interesting facts that have altered my perception of some of today's most liquid markets. Everything from the fundamentals of equities to the complexities of derivatives - this book sheds light, all be it basic, ...more

Financial Markets are complicated: if you have a substantial amount of money and/or rich friends you can strike up just about any kind of deal. GtFM goes into many of the different types of deals that companies, investors and governments do, as well as the amounts of cash involved and the motivations behind the deals. The book gives some examples but doesn't really go into a lot of details or rich scenarios that would give the reader a solid grasp of each type of financial deal; however, the boo ...more

Shelves: economics, finance
A very concise, pragmatic overview of a lot of core financial concepts. Good as a refresher/reference guide after having studied several of the subjects covered. Not quite sure how it would come off as an introduction to the subject (probably not comprehensive enough), but fairly information-rich.

Good enough for what it is: a bit haphazard, breadth-over-depth guide.
An adequate reference book for anyone trying to understand what the heck a financial market is. Levinson doesn't embellish, but then he doesn't try to make the subject interesting, either. Reads like a textbook.

This book provided insightful information on the topics it promised, but they way they were delivered were too formal and might prove to be difficult to penetrate for the most part for some readers.

Definitely not for dummies!

Material is extremely dense and dry.

Provides a very good synopsis of the financial markets. Accessible to people fairly familiar with general finance.

A basic book on financial markets. The book is informative but not very entertaining.
Great introduction. Could use references and a further reading section. Sometimes redundant and lacking in clear examples. Good book to whet the appetite though.
super boring!
