This is a funny and sweet story about an adorable dog with horrible breath. The plot was very, very similar to Walter the Farting Dog by William Kotzwinkle, but the noxious fumes are coming out of the other end. Since this book was written first, I suppose it gets the credit for being the original. Both stories are very silly and funny and our girls loved them.

There were several puns that are more for adults than for children, which I thought were funny. I explained them to our girls and we all...more

"There once was a dog named Hally, who lived with the Tosis family."

This book had me cracking up from the first page til the last! Hally has the funkiest breath imaginable and even has the skunks running for cover! The pictures in this book are HILARIOUS! For instance there is one scene where Hally the dog is breathing and the wall paper is curling, the fish is upside down in it's bowl dead and there is a picture of the Mona Lisa on the wall holding her nose. Also I love how Hally just looks so...more

Dav Pilkey does more than express how terrible Hally’s breath is. He makes the dog’s breath come life as if it is its own character. He uses green hues to show the reader how smelly her breath is. Anytime Hally is around, the other characters are holding their noses or fainting. The use of characters to express how smelly her breath is makes her breath seem even more real. The author gives examples such as a skunk being afraid of Hally’s breath to further develop the dogs breath. The author adds...more

Hally Tosis, is a very good family dog with a very big problem: bad breath! Her breath is so bad, even skunks avoid her! Mr. and Mrs. Tosis are at their wits end, and plan to give Hally away. But the Tosis children love their dog, and search for a breathtaking miracle cure! Very silly, and very fun! ...Just be thankful it's not a scratch-n-sniff book! The focus trait in this writing assignment is idea development; the writer's goal is to create a unique story idea that is made memorable by its u...more

Like many children books, it was a cute story-line. At this time, my family's raising a young pup and she can be troubling, to the point that we want her out of our sight sometimes, like the family in the book, but at the end of the day, they're worthy keepers. Every being is going to have their disadvantages, and we have to embrace and accept the strengths and weakness and love them for who they are, especially dogs whom are very lovable and affectionate creatures :) This book definitely influe...more

Okay, so it's not my favorite book but both my 5-year-old son and my 2-year-old daughter love it. THEY ask for it over and over again and it is written for them after all, not for me. The illustrations are simple and full of bright colors, another thing children love. There IS one thing I really like about the book - the dog's name, Hally Tosis. Hally Tosis has halitosis, or bad breath, talk about a memorable way to teach your children a complicated word. Her breath is so bad that the family is...more

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! Ok...the laughing is out of my system....hehe. Or not.

Seriously though, this book is great. A must read for Dav Pilkey fans or even for anybody who just needs a good laugh. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go regain my composure.

This is a cute book, but some kids might get confused by the plays on words (scents, instead of sense, etc.). But for kids old enough to learn about homophones, I think they would like the humor a lot. This book was reviewed on one of my favorite web sites, which has reviews that are actually written by kids: http://www.launchpadmag.com/2011/06/d...

Dav Pilkey's books are a bit gross at times, but that is what gets a lot of the boys in my class reading, so if that is what it takes, I'm all for it...more

My niece and nephew liked this book. My nephew was thoroughly disgusted by Hally Tosis's green breath, but that didn't stop him from huffing his breath in my face and asking, "Amy, does my breath stink?" I swear, that child....

Dog Breath was fine, and the kids were entertained by it. It reminded me, however, of Walter the Farting Dog, only less disgusting, and possibly less objectionable.

This book was a fantastic read. This could be used in a health lesson when discussing dental subjects. This book is about a dog named Hally Tosis and the fact he had such bad breath. His owners tried to get rid of him numerous times at a carnival and even at the movies. One night burglars broke into the home and the dog licked the burglars until the passed out from the dogs horrible breath. The owners were elated to see he caught the burglars and decided to keep him.

This was my absolute favorite book growing up! Dog Breath The Horrible Trouble with Haley Tosis is a funny and excellent story about a dog named Haley Tosis that had horrible breath, She goes all over and it smells so awful to everyone, including her own family. But, her breath comes in use when she stops a robbery near the end of the book. This book emphasises the importance of good hygenine. It made me want to brush my teeth at night, thats for sure!

This books is very humorous and has great ending. It is about a dog with really bad breath and the family wants to get rid of him. However, when a thief broke into the house, the dog's bad breath drove away the robber. The dog becomes a hero and everyone loved him. This book would be good for teaching children that even you have some characteristics that you don't like, it still can be useful. Good for boosting self-confidence.

This book was one for younger kids, and that's when I read it. This book was the funniest, saddest, and funniest book I've ever read. This book is about a dog who has the worst smelling breath in the world, and his family really can't talk it. They try to do everything in their power to freshen his breath, but it never gets better. The family decides to sell the dog but doesn't succeed in doing so because of what happens that night. One night some robbers come in, and are greeted by the bad breath...more

I like the pun at the very end of the story about it would make and scents, although that could be misleading to new readers. I liked how it puts a twist on a flaw. Students need to see that just because the dog had bad breath did not mean that he did not deserve to be loved or could not use his negative quality for a good thing. I think this book has lots of deeper meaning and I love it!

This book is a comical. I liked because it is a way to introduce topics in health like brushing teeth and having good hygiene. Since the character is a dog, it makes the situation easier to discus so children’s feelings won’t get hurt. It also teaches children to have confidence in themselves. It shows them they may have traits other does not like but it might come in handy one day.

This book was very funny. The illustrations captured the dog's breath perfectly. I put this book on the shelf "play on words" because of his name Hally Tosis. Younger student's may not know that's a medical condition that causes bad breath, but I thought that was pretty funny when I opened to the first page. Hally Tosis can be a great addition to any classroom library.

The main character in this story is the cutest ever! Too bad she has horrible breath! Everyone takes her for granted and shuns her until she does the unthinkable and saves the day. We explored this story using a critical analysis approach and this is an activity I would try with my class. Hopefully, students would be able to look past minor faults to see the good in others.

This book is a funny story that relates to self hygiene. It will be a good book to read to the students who have hard time controlling their self hyginene. It can also be read to talk about cause and effect. The character is a dog that the kids will love to read about. Through this book, the teacher will able to find out what the kids want as their pet.

My son got a kick out of it. Apart from being a funny book, especially using the name of the ailment for the dog;Hally Tosis (halitosis). The dog's breath was gin=ven a life of it's own. More on a serious side it also teaches children that even though someone or something may have a fault, that fault can be useful or meaningful.
Randy
I love this book. It's got great pictures, a wonderful little story and introduces children to the concept of foreshadowing beautifully. Certainly, it's not To Kill a Mockingbird but it's a wonderful children's storybook.

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. There is a dog name Halle Tosis and it has bad breath. The dog breath is so bad it knocked out the criminals when they broke into the dog owner's house. This book will make your students giggle because it made me laugh the whole way through. I love this book.

Cute book with fun word-play, but I lost some of the younger kids at my storytime on the double meanings (e.g., taking Hali to a "breathtaking view" in the hopes that it would take his bad breath away)...though they seemed to like the story well enough without the deeper level of understanding.

We read this book in class after my professor brought her dog to class. The book was perfect for the environment of the classroom that day. This would be a great book to read and connect with our students. Many of them may have pets, so I am sure that they will be very engaged in the book.

Picture Book: I also read this with my niece, nephew, and little sister. They thought it was hilarious. My quick synopsis: Hally is a good dog with bad breath. Children are sad because they need to get rid of her. Hally licks burglars and scares them away; the Tosis family keeps Hally.
Rehema Payne
This is a great book for teaching kids about dental hygiene and can be extended to bodily hygiene as well. It is funny and has cute jokes about Hally Tosis. I remember this book from my childhood days. I found this book to be a very creative way to teaching children about hygiene.

My 7-year-old said: "This is EXACTLY like Walter the Farting Dog!" And it is. But DOG BREATH was published first, by a handful of years. This was a big, very sad revelation for all of us...we can never read Walter the Farting Dog in the same way again...oh, Walter, Walter...sob...
Cana
Walter the Farting Dog totally ripped this book off. Same story. Here we have a dog with bad breath; in Walter, we have a dog with bad farts. Both are getting ready to be sent away because of their horrible odors when they save the day by stunning robbers with their stench. They are heroes and stay happily forever.
Julie
This is the humorous story of Hally Tosis, a sweet family dog with HORRIBLE breath! They try everything they can to improve Hally's breath but nothing works. Then, it turns out that her breath can be quite useful and because of it she saves the day and becomes a hero!!!
Alana Graham
This book was gross. I can imagine some students thinking it's hilarious, but I don't see the ending as something positive, even though it's portrayed to be. Hally Tosis has terrible breath, which is never addressed. Eventually people learn to love the dog, breath and all.
