This is a pretty great cookbook from Australia, that doubles as a food history primer, written by a guy with a really entertaining sense of humor.

The book is organized by theme: the pig, the squid, and the olive, being just a few of many, also including the lemon, the grape, the egg, the chicken, etc. Each section gives food history, as well as really simple and classic recipes that in most cases date back hundreds of years.

I think this is the same book I read - but titled 'Rump and a Rough Red'in the Aussie edition. Entertaining narrative, a bit of history, a bit of travelogue and some good down to earth recipes from different cultures.
