I enjoyed reading about Marc Chagall and his experience, related through Eric Kimmel's vision from true events, of learning to be an artist. Very fun to read about Yehuda Pen, the art teacher, and the town of Vitebsk, Russia.
I think anyone can relate to Marc's angst on trying to find a niche for himself. As his parents sacrifice so that Marc can go to school and become a better provider than his herring factory worker father Marc knows that studying is not for him. But what is? He stumbles More...

As a short story of a boy who wants to be an artist, this book is not so bad. However, it's marketed as a biography of Marc Chagall. It contains no real information about Chagall. Nothing about why he's important, what's special about his artwork, nor are there any pictures of his art! A child who reads this will learn nothing about Chagall other than his name. A disappointment, coming from Eric Kimmel.

Interesting to learn about Marc Chagall's origins... his eyes were opened to his great talent, and despite little encouragement initially, he followed his dream... and achieved success! Inspirational read for kids... and grown-ups, too :)

This beginning chapter book would be a good historical fiction read for 3rd/4th graders. It tells the childhood of Marc Chagall and how he became an artist.
