"POWERFUL. . .GODWIN IS BRILLIANT. . .DEFTLY PLOTTED AND IMAGINED. . . [It] deepened my long-cherished belief about certain forms of art: that in exploring extremities of human behavior, in forcing us to wade through real or metaphorical blood, such art saves us from these experiences and is cathartic in the best sense of the term."

This was a strange and somewhat unsettling story of a woman who sort of drifts through life, letting others care for her. Her one attempt to change that falls through. She says, "If this hadn't happened, I would do something else." Not taking responsibility for her choices, but pinning them on events outside of herself.
There are a few interestng ideas - the idea of marriage as a container for our life and that maybe everyone wants some kind of container. Something to ponder.

Since I am a great fan of Gail Godwin, I had high hopes for this book. Very disappointed. About all I can really say is that the title aptly describes the characters. Not much of a plot.

I really enjoyed this read, but the ending upset me. I thought it should have ended better and differently.

I like Gail Godwin. This book was written in the 1970s and is indicative of that era. Not a great book; a quick read / character study.
