Green-eyed Caroline Tressidor has the whole world at her feet. But at Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, Caroline lets slip a secret. It is nearly fatal.

This is the first book by Victoria Holt that I ever read, so I really didn’t know what to expect. I had come across some interesting reviews and recommendations from readers who enjoyed gothic novels and historically accurate events in them, which I also consider a must, so I decided to give it a chance.

First of all, I researched a bit on the author and I found out that ‘Victoria Holt’ was a pseudonym used by Eleanor Alice Burford Hibbert to write novel...more

Caroline Tressidor lets slip A Very Important Fact to her father, which gets her shunted off to the countryside, disinherited, and forced to find her own way in the world. Her trusting and girlish nature is given quite the bombardment by a couple of guys who make some Very Selfish Decisions. But, like most Holt heroines, she keeps on keeping on and doesn't wallow that much in her woes. In the end she gets the guy of her dreams and learns about the spirit of compromise and focusing on the future...more

For some reason, I would rate this with one other VH book, the highest of the dozen or so that I have read. I really connected with the heroine and the man she loves. He is the single best drawn love interest of the heroine I have read in the VH novels. He is more passionate and more real, and believable than any other and I loved their story. The only hokey element was the character who was only there to help them out, so to speak. Could see that twist coming!
Highly recommended.

I read this for Victorian Era information, especially facts concerning Queen Victoria's golden and diamond jubilees. While the historical aspects of the book were good, the story was so darn depressing I didn't enjoy even one moment of it. Nothing good happens! Nothing! It's one sad event after another. Two stars for historical. One star for story.

Another typical Victoria Holt, very predictable, although the ending was a bit of a surprise. Her books seem to always have the same plot , A love that can never be, but some how, in the end it all works out...never the less they are great mindless entertainment that I can do when I have nothing better to do!

I am re-reading all of the Victoria Holt books, and they do not disappoint, not even the second time. This is full of wonderful characters, romance and suspense. It's a wonderful combination.

I had never read Victoria Holt before, but I had heard good things, and sure enough, it was right up my alley. I loved this book (recommended by my good friend, Julia) and promptly began another.

The Landower Legacy is about Caroline Tressidor and her life in late Victorian England. There are some family secrets that give her the short end of the inheritance stick, so she goes to live with her Aunt Mary at Tressidor Manor in the country.

This is the first Victoria Holt book that I've read & I could not put it down. I am drawn to first person narratives and liked the main character. There is mystery and it's a love story.

Victoria Holt did a fantastic job in this story of love, sadness, hope and suspicion. If you decide to read it I hope you enjoy it.

I read this last year and can't recall a thing. That's how boring it was.

i liked the device of bracketing the story with Victoria's Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

I have loved Victoria Holt since I was a young twenty something, and must have missed a few of her books. I loved the sotry of a young girl who finds out her father is not her father, and that someone wants her dead. recommended.

OK, I'm still in a review funk and can't scrape up much else to say after Karla's excellent wrap up here. You definitely could see where many of the plot twists were heading, but it was still fun getting there. I haven't read every Holt title yet, but this is one of my favorites so far.

This is one of my all time favorites! I've been coming back to this book every couple of years since I was in high school and read it for the first time. There's mystery, romance, danger and I love the time and places where this story takes place.

I read all of Victoria Holt mystery/romance books in my 30s. Holt books are a higher caliber of romance fiction than something like Harlequins. Historically accurate. Good recreational reading with something to keep you turning pages.

Hmm, that is strange that this website doesn't have this book on here. Oh sure, it has it on videocassette. Oh well, this too was a great romance novel that I really enjoyed.
