I really loved this book! It's the first I've read from Walter Dean Myers but have heard a lot about his writing. This book was a great first read. This is a collection of short stories with characters all from the same neighborhood - even the same street (145th Street). I loved how all the stories were connected in come way and I got an in-depth look at this neighborhood without a straight storyline directly connecting all the characters. I think students would appreciate this collection b More...

I have only read the first story in this collection, titled "the fashion show, bar-b-que, and grand opening memorial service." One theme of this story is... My message to me was to care and be there for others. To do things that you know you might not be able to, even if you don't have the person that you need. From the story Dad was there for the girl trough everything when dad died he left a running start to the three ladies he loved. I think the ladies (daughters and wife) were not r More...

145th Street Stories" is a collection of short tales tied together by the fact that all characters reside on the same street in Harlem. The first story, "Big Joe's Funeral" tells the humorous tale of a Harlem resident who decides to plan his own funeral, while very much alive. He encounters some dissent from his girlfriend's teenaged daughter, but still goes forward with his plans. "Kitty & Mack: A Love Story" is a tale of young love and how life-changing events can alte More...

This book of short stories is by Walter Dean Myers. I like this author very much, but was a little disappointed in this book. I will say that the writing got better with every story and my interest increased also. I think if I had read the book, 145th Street, I would have enjoyed this companion book more.

Review from School Library Journal:
On 145th Street, the Curl-E-Que Beauty Shop serves as a loose nexus for both the community members and their stories. Cheryl tries to sedu More...

I just read the fist story in this book: "the fashion show, bar-b-cue, and grand opening service", but I'm starting to love this book! Well, I don't think that I'll get a chance to keep on reading the short stories of this book, but I'd love to. This story is sooo sad. However, it has a really great life lesson(theme): many people will always be remembered even after their deaths. Well, it has may themes, but this theme is the one that I could relate to....when you have someone dear t More...

I have only read the first story in this collection "the old fashion show, bar-b-que,and grand opening memorial services."One theme of this story is that you should always be willing to help someone when they need you because you might be the only person who can really help them. This story helps prove this theme because no one was willing to help Mr.Evans and the only person who could really help him was his daughter Abeni. She was the only person that Mr.Evans felt like he could real More...

"fashion show, grand opening, bar-b-que memorial service" is found in the book what they found, by Walter Dean Myers. Abeni's dad has cancer, so he's going to die. Before his family knew about this tradegy, they bought a beauty parlor to start their own bussiness. Abeni's mom was going to be the manager, of course, but after her family found out about her husband's upcoming death, she didn't want to open it. Abeni's father wanted his funeral to help them in some way, so he came up with More...

I have only read the first story in this collection, titled "the fashion show,bar-b-que, and grand opening memorial service." One theme of this story is being happy even when life seems to fail. In the story readers first see this theme in place when the dad, Troy Evans, is sick and diagnosed with cancer.Even though the dad is ill, he would like his family to move on with their lives and to open the shop and be successful. Later in the story when the shop was just bought the theme is s More...

I have only read the first story in this collection, titled "the fashion show, bar-b-que, and grand opening memorial service." One theme of this story is that you have to move even though there are obstacles in your way and if there is a conflict you have to find the resolution. In this story it shows how the main character in the story Abeni is having a hard time getting through of what her father is going through. Abeni then knows that she has to deal with this situation no matter ho More...

My claim is that Albeni and her family stood strong even in a bad time for her family. This book is a really cool book. One short story in particular, " Fashion Show, Grand opening, and Bar-B-Que Memorial Service." is A very good book. The main character's mother buys an old beauty salon and renames it The Curly-Q. Her family statys happy and proud even though her husband is dying from a terrible illness. The book is an inpirational story with a theme everyone can learn from, which is t More...

I have only read the first story in his collection, titled "the fashion show bar b-Que, and grand opening memorial service."One of the themes of this story is obstacles can prevent you from being able to get to your dream, but that will not stop you from keeping on trying. This is a good example of this short story due to the fact that Troy, Abenis father, has cancer and had a dream to make a funeral like Big Joe.He wanted to do that and also be able to make a grand opening of their new More...

A collection of short stories from one of the great authors. These stories are all about love; husband-wife; parent-child; siblings; neighbors and friends. The stories work great separately for readings and also paint one large mosaic picture of Harlem and this community. Readers who liked Street Love will like seeing characters they are already familiar with.

I have only read the first story in this collection ,titled "the fashion show, bar-b-que,and grand opening memorial service.'One theme of this story is that you should always try to overcome sadness when something tragic happens to you. For example, in the short story the Evans family had a funeral because one of the main characters named Troy Evans had cancer so he eventually passed out, but his family like his daughters and wife tried to not get so depressed. They made his funeral how he More...

I have only read the first story in this collection, titled "the fashion show, bar-b-que, and grand opening memorial service." One theme of this story is that to accomplish a goal, one needs to demonstrate great effort and confidence, and the theme is revealed: when Abeni's father speaks to her about his upcoming death, when Abeni asks Big Joe for help, and when Abeni's father dies. Abeni manages to handle the tragic news of her father's upcoming death and being able to accomplish a s More...

Sadly, I was only able to read the first chapter of this book, "the fashion show, bar-b-que, and grand opening memorial service." Even when you only read the first chapter you see the very strong theme that death is inevitable but you have to move on none the less. You see this the way Abani's father tells her and her mother and sister to open up the Beauty shop even though they know that he is dying and that they love him. We also see this when Abeni, her sister and her mother have al More...

This is a collection of short stories taking place in Harlem in the famed neighborhood of 145th/147th Street.

I like how Myers linked the characters and stories together even though they were told by many different people from the neighborhood.

i have only read the first story in this collection ,titled"the fashion show bar-b-que,and grand opening memorial service"one theme of this story is to put others needs before yours. I think this because in the story Troy Evans (father of two )is dying and he still tries to help his family survive after he dies so they're taken care of. In fact his dying wish was that his funeral should be a celebration promoting his wife's business because since he was the man in the house he made the More...

i think this book has an emotional twist because the story we read was "the fashion show,bar-b-que,and grand opening memorial service" by Walter dean Myers. Has a twist in it because it seems like the dad is in good condition but later on he realizes he has cancer and hes gonna die soon. so then tears are shed between them but not the fathers because he wants them to be a success when he dies so when they have his funeral he wants the daughters and mom to start their new business. no o More...
