According to the official version, president Alvaro Obregon was shot to death by Jose de Leon Toral. Autopsy findings, however, established 13 entrance wounds and 6 exit wounds made by different bullet calibers. Did the shooter use 6 different guns? Or were there in reality 6 different shooters? To complicate matters even more, all potential witnesses to the homicide died under suspicious circumstances or were murdered in the few months that followed that tragic 7th of July in 1928. The list of suspects includes President Plutarco Elias Calles, Luis N. Morones, founder of the CROM (Mexico's largest labor federation), the renowned Mexican abbess Madre Conchita, and other obscure high-ranking men within Mexican clergy. Description in Spanish: La version oficial dice que, siendo presidente electo, Alvaro Obregon fue asesinado a tiros por Jose de Leon Toral, pero la autopsia encontro en el cadaver 13 orificios de entrada y 6 de salida de balas de distintos calibres, y concluyo que o el tirador uso seis pistolas o hubo seis tiradores. Para colmo, los posibles testigos de los hechos fueron muriendo, tambien asesinados o en circunstancias extranas, pocos meses despues de aquel terrible 7 de julio de 1928. La lista de sospechosos de tanta desgracia y verguenza nacional incluye al presidente Plutarco Elias Calles, al fundador de la CROM, Luis N. Morones, a la renombrada madre Conchita y a una serie de oscuros personajes encumbrados en el clero de Mexico. Estos datos, desde luego, fueron ocultados cuidadosamente durante ochenta anos y por fin salen a la luz en esta novela historica y reveladora, respaldada por una investigacion minuciosa y plena de accion e intriga, incluso de amor.(less)

A great read for those of us who are too young to remember those dark days of the Mexican "chirstera" wars in the 1920's.

As always Martín Moreno writes a great novel with an incredible amount of research. He goes back and forth from the historic novel to the story of the author writing the same book within the book; the second story is far too week to stand its ground next to the thrilling counterpart. This is why I can't give this book a perfect 5 star review.
