Diterlizzi and Black have redeemed themselves! For anyone who did not read my review of book 2 I'll just say I was disappointed and hoped this, the final book of the series, would be better. It is! There is plenty of action, interaction of characters, and a satisfying ending for both the book and the series.

I finished this book with a sense of the bitter sweet. Sweet because it was the conclusion to a great trilogy. But bitter because it hints that there will be no more books in the Spiderwick world. It is the last book in the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles trilogy, and the last of 11 books set in the Spiderwick world. Overall, a good book. But, it disappoints me being the last book in the Spiderwick chronicles. The Wyrm King is the last book in the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles series. The book was longer than the other two in the series. We get to see Jared, Mallory, and Simon again which is nice. This is the third and final novel in the "Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles" series. This book was a pretty good one. I still think that the original Spiderwick Chronicles were much better, but if you liked the second novel in Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles than this book won't disappoint.

Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles is, at first glance, basically the kind of sequel you'd expect. It takes the themes and ideas of the first Spiderwick series and revisits them with a new cast of characters. So again, we have kids who discover the hidden magic all around them, by gaining the ability to see the fairies and other assorted magic creatures around them. And they also get involved in a big adventure, that involves having to save peop...more This is a review of the series moreso than this book.

Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles is, at first glance, basically the kind of sequel you'd expect. It takes the themes and ideas of the first Spiderwick series and revisits them with a new cast of characters. So again, we have kids who discover the hidden magic all around them, by gaining the ability to see the fairies and other assorted magic creatures around them. And they also get involved in a big adventure, that involves having to save people from the creatures that - to everyone else - are essentially invisible.

But for the sequel series, the authors tried to mix things up a little. Family backgrounds were changed: instead of a family on the brink of divorce, we get a blended family - Nick Vargas and his new, fairy-obsessed sister who just got introduced to his life. The setting is different: the woodsy small town is replaced with the Florida beach. And, perhaps most controversially of all, the threat is replaced: sentient human-like goblins are replaced with giants and wyrms, who have the intelligence of a typical animal, but are threatening just the same.

One of the things I liked about the original Spiderwick series is the constant looming threat of the ogre Mulgareth and his army, and what they might do to the kids as they try to get their MacGuffin... er, book. All the threats they encountered were intelligent life forms - goblins that locked kids in cages and wanted to eat them, dwarves who captured the sister and put her in a sleeping spell, and the shapeshifting ogre who ultimately came after the entire family.

But in Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, the primary threats are animalistic. The giants just stomp around and react to specific things, unintentionally damaging the world around them, hence they must be stopped. The wyrms have their own animal-like behavior, and they cause havoc without consciously knowing what they're doing. Basically, it's like taking a story of someone who has to evade a kidnapper, and deciding to write a sequel where the person has to survive an earthquake instead. The change is almost that drastic. Human vs. magic humanoid becomes human vs. magic nature.

But most of the classic Spiderwick elements still remain. Mermaids and boggarts still exist, and are still sentient and show human-like desires and pose their own unique threats. The characters still have to use brains rather than brawn to survive, always to me the defining element of an adventure. And the mix of adventurous storytelling with fun character interaction and real-life elements continues just as before, and done just as well as in the first series.

One thing does bother me a bit, though, and that is the enlarging of the cast. In the first Spiderwick, the kids were mostly acting on their own, though with some magical help and a brief chat with two adult mentors who, for their own reasons, cannot actively help them. Here, though, the kids gain direct help from not only the main characters of the first book series, but they even get help from the girlfriend of the older brother character, bringing in another outsider, and there's another adult mentor.

It is neat to see the Grace kids from the first book interacting with the Vargas family from this one, and I also liked seeing Nick's older brother introduce his girlfriend to the fairy world and get her help. But it's just not the same as with the first book, where Simon, Jared and Mallory Grace were on their own. Here, Nick Vargas has many supports he can call on, and does. In the end, of course, it's largely Nick's quick thinking that save the day, but it just wasn't quite the same feeling as when you have a smaller cast of main characters handling their own selves against a big threat.

However, even with these changes, I still liked the new series overall. The storytelling was of the same quality as the first, the interactions between the old and new characters were interesting and fun, and the change from "intelligent" to "natural" threat was actually handled pretty well, and proved to be just as devastating - actually, much moreso - as the threat from the first book series. In all, I'd have to say that Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles is a worthy follow-up to the original Spiderwick Chronicles, and while I'm still not a huge fan of all the changes done, I think that overall, it was handled pretty well.(less)

As I feared, this book made the second one entirely unnecessary. I guess a series of two books seems pretty flimsy, but to stretch the "plot" out across three books makes it even more obviously weak. Well, this is the third and final installment of this bizarre little spin-off series, and unfortunately, the best thing that can be said about the whole affair is that at least it's a quick read. As I feared, this book made the second one entirely unnecessary. I guess a series of two books seems pretty flimsy, but to stretch the "plot" out across three books makes it even more obviously weak. A good portion of the book is spent totally undoing everything that was the entire point of the second book, and the happenings of the first one are almost forgotten. This book and series is really trying to get some kind of scope and feeling of real danger across, but it just doesn't work. The writing is bland, the characters even more so, and the story is embarrassingly puerile. So many plot elements just didn't make sense. I'm kind of amazed that certain (even promising!) characters appeared for literally about 20 pages throughout the entire series, and then just left the story without any decent explanation. Nick is still unpleasant, though there are attempts at his redemption, and his transformation as a character is still abrupt and pretty unconvincing. Laurie still comes across as a weaksauce Luna Lovegood copy with a fraction of the personality or memorability. Just because someone wears odd clothes and you say she's quirky doesn't mean she is--You have to show that she is. It seemed like they really wanted to cram a lot of stuff in here, so they finally had a LOT of action, and the whole thing is hurried and spread really thin across too many characters and too many events. Really, they should have spread the events of this one across two books and skipped almost all of what happened in book 2. I also just don't think the Grace kids needed to be involved at all, except maybe as a brief cameo, a subtle wink to fans of the first series, but I guess there's not much subtlety involved in this book.

And yes, the issues of divorce and mixed family are a little more prevalent here: Indeed, the first scene lands the family of five smack-dab in the middle of a hippie psychologist's office (located in her garage--how... charming?), where we are witness to an overlong and ineffective session of family therapy. Why is it that both the core trios of kids in the Spiderwick series come from broken families? It seems kind of like easy drama and angst, automatically built in, and therefore feels kind of like lazy writing. In the end, they basically hug and decide to, y'know, try and stuff. Personal growth was hastily thrown in at the end, and didn't really convince me.

I would give this 1 1/2 stars, if half-star ratings were allowed, since it IS a little better than the second one, and it DOES have a little bit more direction, but it's still just a sort of shameless attempt at capitalizing on the young fantasy genre. I liked a very few things about this book. Their take on giants, mermaids and dragons is pretty unique, but is unfortunately used to little effect in the end. The design is still pretty cool, but the illustrations have sadly declined in quality and interest from those in the first book. The kids look different ages every time they appear, they don't dress like kids really do, and WHY do Julian and Mallory have the same haircut?

On the back cover are splashed in large, unmistakable lettering the words: "IT'S OVER!!!" Let's hope so.(less)

I read this last book in the series more for closure than anything else. It is good that this marks the last book in the Spiderwick series (well, technically "Beyond Spiderwick") as I think it has run out of energy.

The Wyrm King wraps up this follow up series of chapter books to the famous Spiderwick Chronicles. Beyond Spiderwick was an interesting way to extend the concept and the books were enjoyable but not in the "I can't wait until the next book comes out" way of some series.

Charmant gruselig, liebevoll ausgestattet, mit fantastischen ganzseitigen Federzeichnungen.

Der letzte Band der Spiderwickgeheimnisse konnte mich (gott sei dank) wieder überzeugen. Da ich Band 6 und 7 nicht so berauschend fand, fand ich den 8 Band umso berauschender. Die Story des Buches hat mit gut gefallen mit den Riesen, Meergeistern, Nixen und vor allem mit dem Wyrm bzw. der Hydra. Die Figuren die in den vorigen Bänden aufgetaucht sind haben sich alle in dem Abschlussband zusammengefunden, und genau diese Mischung hat mir äußerst gut gefallen. Es war genug Spannung und Action sowie auch paar kleine Rästel bzw. Geheimnisse enthalten was meiner Meinung nach äußert gelungen umgesetzt wurde. Ich kann also nur jedem empfehlen dem die vorigen zwei Bände der Vargas-Kinder auch nicht so zugesagt haben, lest trotzdem den Abschlussband! Es lohnt sich!

Kommen wir aber mal zu den Charakteren. Mit der Vargas-Familie konnte ich mich diesmal richtig gut anfreunden. Nick und Laurie kamen diesmal viel sympathischer und interessanter rüber als in den vorigen Teilen. Mit Nick's Vater konnte ich diesmal zwar auch nicht viel anfangen aber zum Glück kam er nicht so oft vor wie ich's mir gedacht habe... Jules und Charlene sowie Cindy und Stachelgras haben mir wieder gut gefallen und besonders Stachelgras hält eine Überraschung parat ;) Die Meergeister sowie die Nixen waren mal wieder unsympathisch wie eh und je, aber was soll's... geholfen haben sie schließlich trotz alledem :) Richtig interessant fand ich diesmal Jack Junior und die Wyrms bzw. die Hydra. Wären diese Figuren in dem Band nicht aufgetaucht wäre dieser bei weitem nicht so gut geworden wie er jetzt ist. Ich möchte an dieser Stelle aber nicht allzuviel von der Hydra schreiben aus Spoilergründen ;) Zu den Riesen kann ich nur schreiben das sie genauso sind wie in den vorigen Bänden (wen wundert's) und zu den Grace-Kindern wissen wahrscheinlich auch alle die, die die vorigen Rezis zu den Büchern gelesen haben, wie ich zu ihnen stehe :)

Story und Figuren sind also in Ordnung. Kommen wir nun zu den beiden Autoren. Holly Black hat in diesem Band wieder gut Arbeit geleistet, ich konnte mir alles wieder bildlich vorstellen und mit den Charakteren mitfühlen. Tony DiTerlizzi hat sein Niveau gehalten und die Zeichnungen sind mal wieder traumhaft (obwohl mir die Zeichungen der älteren Mallory nicht so sehr gefallen...). Die Aufmachung des Buches ist mal wieder klasse umgesetzt worden und man kann sich wirklich nicht beklagen. Ich vergebe also somit alles in allem 4 von 5 Punkten. Ich habe einen Punkt abgezogen da mir die Vargas-Familie halt nicht so sympathisch ist wie die Grace-Familie. Die Spiderwickgeheimnisse sind für mich Jared, Simon und Mallory und nicht Nick, Laurie und Jules. Die letzteren sind eher zu einem Teil des ganzen geworden anstatt die Hauptfiguren. So denke ich jedenfalls darüber. Wer also nun interessiert ist, der sollte die Serie unbedingt lesen! Es lohnt sich! Und für alle diejenigen denen der sechste und siebte Band auch nicht so zugesagt hat, haltet durch und lest den letzten Band! Der macht das meiste wieder weg und das Ende kann sich sehen lassen! ;)(less)

I'm a huge fan of Holly Black and of Tony DiTerlizzi and I loved the Spiderwick movie, but I didn't enjoy the books quite as much as I liked the movie or as much as I've liked some of Holly Black's other stuff. Still, I've now read all of them (they'd be worth it for the illustrations, even if they were lousy otherwise) and I've enjoyed them well enough.

Shelves: juvenile-fantasy

A satisfying resolution to the "Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles" series, and the notes in the back say that it is the end of the Spiderwick books as a whole. The authors probably made a good decision about this.
The Wyrm King ends up being an allegory about ecological balance and brute force solutions, and the series overall is partly about how people are blinded by their own beliefs. That aspect is not heavy handed enough to detract from the story.

Well, I finished it, and I held out hope until end. I thought with the emergence of the Wyrm King this series might save itself and pull out of the nose dive. Alas, twas not the case. The series ends the way it began with a weak plot line and weaker character development. There was opportunity in the final climatic moments for it to at least provide a thrilling mental picture battle, but it falls just short. The final book has many elements taking the stage from a family torn apart to a group of friends realizing they have made one mistake after another. I think I got used to the shortness of the original Spiderwick chronicle books and the pacing of the previous 2 books. I like to read a chapter a day so if I feel I can't knock a whole one out I don't do it for that day.

If you stuck through the first two I don't see why you wouldn't read this one. Even though this book is stated as the official end of the Spiderwick Tales (original and beyond) that not all the loose ends are tied up. It also states that there are many stories of other children seeing faeries out there. Just that we need to pen them ourselves.So I do feel a bit bashful about my initial complaint asking why this couldn't be a collection of stories about many different children's accounts of faeries from around the world. It was meant to connect to the Grace children Beyond the Spiderwick estate with the account of Nick and the Vargas family.

Sorry that this isn't a fully in depth review, but since this is the final book I didn't want to get too in depth. I will say please AT LEAST read through the first book before making any judgement calls. Some people will read Jared's "lard ass" comment and automatically write him and the series off (I almost did). Really by the end of the book you'll see that overall BTSWC does keep the Grace children in character. I even found myself endeared to the Vargas family as well by the time it was all over. If nothing else this series is worthwhile for getting a chance to see a certain someone in person you never get to see in the original Spiderwick Chronicles books!(less)

In The Wyrm King, book 3 of Beyond The Spiderwick, I like the way the author retells the story by allowing the reader to remember what was left off from book 2. He allows the reader to relieve the conflict between Nicolas Vargas and his psycho step-sister and her thoughts of a magical place. From giants coming out of the ground suddenly, to mermaids playing with Nicolas‘s mind, to a small dragon that grows into a giant dragon connected by its tales, all part of this magical adventure that makes...more

Is this really the last of the Spiderwick books? If so, that makes me sad. I loved the first series and have enjoyed this second series almost as much. I want them to write more! There's a poem at the end that gives some hope, although it sounds like they are inviting others to write stories in their world:

Shelves: small-chapter-books, books-that-live-with-me

I loved everything about this book except for the end, left some issues unexplained. The adults without site, who had no idea what was going on, didn't question anything about why their kids were mixed up in all this chaos and had suffered multiple injuries.

That aside, action packed fun that younger readers on up will devour. Would LOVE to see this series done into a movie.

Another series ends and I will miss this one. These books are so wonderful to read out loud as there is so much action with just the right amount of descriptions and great drawings to back it up. There are a few twists and turns on the way to the conclusion to keep older children interested. I highly recommend this series to everyone.

Huge fan of this series, and finally got around to reading the last book. What I think I love most about these books is the family interaction. These are not perfect families, their strength is tenuous at best, and they have real issues with each other, which leads to some major character flaws. Nick has a hard time keeping all the promises he makes, Laurie doesn't seem to be grounded in the real world, and even when they're trying not too, all these kids get into so much trouble, some of it not...more

I think this series took some missteps, but all-in-all I enjoyed it. This was a decent conclusion to the series, but I felt the sloppy inclusion of the primary characters from the initial series slowed things down and didn't really add much.

A good ending to the story. Nice and happy with a bit of mystery. Laurie, Nick, and Jules pull together their family and fight for the balance of the faerie world with the Grace children. Nice little three book story but nothing that exciting.

So, now I've finished the last book in the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles series and... well, it was okay. But honestly, what I liked most about it was that the main characters of the first series were in this one as well because I simply adore Jared and I'm very fond of the other Grace siblings as well. Shelves: childrens, fantasy

Finally the last book in this series! What a relief. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this journey. Only some bits and pieces created from a fantasy world. Although, in general it wasn't interesting. Very boring and colorless. Not memorable.

I spent the summer of 2012 zooming through a few childrens series, this being one of them. I really enjoyed the imagination and detail involved in creating this other world. I cant wait to read these to my kiddos.

I am sorry to say that I was disappointed by The Wyrm King. That may be because my expectations were too high, but I expected it to be at least up to the standards of Holly's previous Spiderwick books. It just seemed to have a different feel.

It was a good continuation of the previous books in the Beyond Spiderwick chronicles series. I love a good story that can capture the imagination and be well developed and be short enough to read in an hour.
