In the book the Promise by Danielle Steel we are taught many life lessons, we learn that no mater what incidents happen in life it goes on and eventually you'll get through it, your taught that if you care about something or someone enough the love will never fade away. The main characters in the book Nancy and Michael are young and madly in love with each other, Michael's mother though is not a fan of Nancy and doesn't approve of her as Michael's girlfriend or wife.

Published in 1978 and my 1st DS book. Re-read and still enjoyed it. "the early morning sun streamed across their backs as they unhooked their bicycles in front of Eliot House on the Harvard campus."

Nancy, an aspiring artist and orphan, and Michael, from a wealthy background, promise to love each other always. Nancy is not who Michael's mother would choose for her son & expresses her distaste and disapproval for this relationship. Michael, has always been the dutiful son to his widowed mother...more

Okaay. Not that good but not very bad either.:) I like the plot but as we all know, it is very common. I like Micheal a lot. I mean who doesn't? He's perfect. He loves his woman very much and Nancy is very lucky to have someone as good as Micheal. They're love for each other really amazes me.:) Ben Avery is funny by the way.:) And did I mention that Peter is very ideal? He may be old but he is definitely HOT.:) At first, I thought Marion was pure evil. But I guess I have to give fair judgement f...more

YOU TOTALLY NAILED IT. :DD hahahaha

This is one of the best romance books I've read. It has a great twist and I admire the girl for being talented. Danielle Steel is FREAKING AWESOME and writing this one.

Here's the story:
They're lovers. He's rich, she's poor, angry mother. (The common.) Then, they runaway to get married but unfortunately, they got into a car accident and the girl's face is RUINED. Like all gone. Yiieehhh!!

His mother offered a deal to her that she will fixed her face if she leave...more

A poor girl marries a rich boy and is unacceptable to her new mother-in-law. When she is in a car accident and terribly disfigured, her mother-in-law pays for her reconstructive surgery on the condition that she will disappear from her son's life. This was a TV movie (and Ms Steele wrote the books afterwards) with Kathleen Quinlan and Steven Collins.

It was a good story! but it took forever for the two main characters to get together again, and when they did it felt rushed like the writer just wanted to story to end. after reading this book i was like "that's a great story! . . . but that's it? That's how they're going to be reuniting? after a few words everything is back to how it was before?" like the whole two years of them separated didn't really matter. . . booo! i wanted more words between the nancy and michael. you'd think they'd have...more

This book has everything you expect from Danielle Steel's novel...the life's journey, thankfully it covered only a two years time frame unlike some other DS novel spanning across decades...and then it was a feel good read...you like the guy, u like the gal...you like their love story...you shed a tear when they go apart, but then you always know they would find their way back together..and they do..

A feel good novel...a novel which involves miracle, for I know, faces once lost, are too difficult...more

Danielle Steel has been one of my favorite authors all the time... Though the book was written 10 yrs before I was born, the story doesn't feel like an old type of story, with the surgical techniques and things described.

The story has a good plot and the tight feeling the reader feels when we know the secret and the hero doesn't and we want to shout it out to help him. The last scene when Nancy goes to break the beads they had buried as a memoir of their promise and sees Mike there already holdi...more

Very romantic story. I first read it at age 15 and really loved it, read it again as an adult and thought it was silly. Why wouldn't he want to look for her grave? But okay, allowing for that, and how easily the main characters get everything they want or think they want, this is a fun little romance. Danielle Steel is a dreadful writer but this book is OK, if you have to read one by her this is the least nauseating. I think she had help with this one, at least I read that that was the case.

I picked this book as I was in mood for a light read..but I didn't know this was a novel written in late 70's and hence the story is as stale. All the twist, turns, feelings you can guess even before the author writes it. I think mostly it has to do with the fact that we are reading it in today's time and its too damn simplistic for that. This might make sense for people who have lived in 70's with it simplistic charm etc..

Will definitely not recommend it.

This book was written in 1976 and was based on a screen play. It started out real sappy and the characters weren't developed too good, but it got better as it went along. The story was intriguing. Giving up love for a new face. You knew the whole time ti was going to work out in the end. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother reading these. I read this book in 12 hours, probably a solid 1 hr & 45 min of reading.

I do not read romance novels. I don't read Danielle Steele. Which is why I'm shocked to have looked up this book only by remembering the story and find out it's a romance novel by Danielle Steele. This was the first romance novel I read. I read it multiple times but never remembered the author's name. I'm still shocked that I've read a Danielle Steel book.

Great story.

I honestly loved this book to pieces. It is a book I could easily relate to in terms of love, but also had an interesting plot with nonacceptance and lying. This is a book I have read several times and have enjoyed each and every time I have read it. It made me laugh, it made me cry. And in the end, it always leaves you smiling at the end. Such an amazing book.

This is a very nice but at the same time very predictable love story. From the moment you start reading, you already know everything's going to work out in the end, no matter how many ups and downs there are. However, it is a good choice if you're in the mood for something light to read, despite all the clichés and, in my opinion, the pretty rushed ending.

Read this back in high school...a lot of my girlfriends read it also...then I happened to watch a Hindi movie called 'yeh vaada raha' which was totally based on this book (but had the Bollywood music...lol) so a bunch of us watched it together which was funny....thank goodness for English subtitles...part of good old time memories.

I read this many many ok many moons ago. It was one of many of hers that I read but it's the only one I remember as being truly memorable. Classic story of rich boy falling for not so rich girl, boy's mother hates girl and will stop at nothing to get her out of son's life. It's probably no longer in print but it's a good story.

First book I ever read because I was bored. I was grounded in high school and I stayed up all night to finish it. It was great! I went on to read Danielle Steel for several years. I loved the way she described the women in the stories and the places they went and where they lived. Just beautitul!

Gotta admit that at the beginning I did not like this novel much ,but as I kept on reading it just caught me with the specific details and the dramatic changes that happens to almost every character in this novel .Danielle Steel sure is a great and talented writer to write such a fascinating novel ,this was my first book to read by Danielle Steel but it sure is not going to be the last.

This is the very first book I read by this author and fell in love with her style of writing as I could 'picture' the story unfolding in my mind. Years later I saw the movie and although it was good I could honestly say that the book was so much better and I have been reading her books ever since.
Teresa
This book was just ok for me. It was very predictable and so so boring. I kept reading in hopes that it picked up towards the middle or the end somehow but no. The end was just what it was the END. Its likd DS was in a hurry to finish the book. It just was not the best book by DS.

The first DAnielle Steel book I ever read, and still my favorite (except maybe for Zora) This is pure soap opera-complete with a scheming wealthy mother, a faked death, plastic surgery and of course, a happy ending. Curl up with this one on a rainy Saturday, and enjoy!
Juliehayden
This is the first novel I ever really got into as a general have to read every book made by this author. Eventually after about 20 of her novels, they became the same. This still remains my fav. book, as I can nearly read it by memory. I have read it several times in life now.
Jenni Boyd
I first saw this as a movie back in 1979, I thought it was such a beautiful love story that I bought the book many years later for my daughter. I found it very moving, it portrayed true love, a love that despite all that were against it, it never died.
Alissa Abraham Goodman
I read this book many years ago. It was one of the first Books I read when I started reading for leisure. Even after all these years, the plot has stuck with me. It is a great love story but also some sadness. Probably one of the few DS books I enjoyed.
Ryshia Kennie
I loved the premise of the story but I did find its resolution rather abrupt and some of the logic in the story didn't hold up to a lot of analysis. But as a light summer read with no thought and just enjoyment, it was an entertaining read.

Paperback Version:

Another oldie by Danielle Steel. I like the way she writes and her stories are always interesting. If you can find this one still in print (probably on Amazon or in your library) and it's affordable, this is not a bad read.

در این کتاب از هرزه نگاری ها و هرزه زدایی هایی که دنیای فیلم و کتاب غربی را به گند کشیده،اثری و از توصیف های شهوت آلود تهوع آور خبری نیست

Since 1981, Ms. Steel has been a permanent fixture on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists. In 1989, she was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having at least one of her books on the Times bestseller list for 381 consecutive weeks. But Guinness was premature. The fact is that one or more of Ms. Steel's novels have been on the New York Times bestseller list for...more
