A World I Never Made is a novel of international suspense and mystery. With mild to moderate expletives and violence, it is not suggested for those who are not mature readers. Written from both Pat Nolan's and Megan's perspective, we are taken back and forth in time to enrapture the reader as author, James LePore, sheds light on the mysterious Megan and her ties to the influential and wealthy men of Europe.

Murder, mystery, suspense and terrorists are what this book is about. I am not normally in the habit of reading a book of this nature but once you begin the first chapter this intense book is impossible to put down. I literally read it straight to the end…only stopping when I had to. So much for laundry…and dinner.

A World I Never Made is Lepore's first novel, and he's off to a great start. This story centers around Pat Nolan, who comes to Paris to identify the body of his daughter, who committed suicide. Except the dead woman is not his daughter, and despite their rocky relationship, he recognizes immediately that his real daughter is in trouble somewhere, and he has got to find her. He teams up with a French detective, and off they go. This novel is tightly plotted with tension that rises steadily, inter...more

In A World I Never Made, American Pat Nolan is called to Paris to claim the body of his daughter Megan. Apparently Megan was suffering from cancer and commited suicide. Megan had been traveling the world working as a freelance journalist for many years and Pat went for long stretches of time without seeing her. Pat raised Megan alone because her mother died during childbirth. However, when Pat sees the body, he knows right away it is not his daughter. For some reason Megan faked her death and Pa...more
My Thoughts:
Dad,
I don't owe you or anybody an explanation, but I think you'll appreciate the irony of a suicide note coming from a person who has abhorred tradition all of her life.
This is the first line of the book (published version may be different from ARC), which totally pulled me into the story and had my interest until I finished. The book takes off with lightening speed and transitions between the years 2003 and 2004. The author weaves the story usin...more

Didn't really 'read' this as much as 'see' it as a film - and it should make a great adventure film,(especially if Angelina Jolie takes the part of the big-breasted, hard-hitting but vulnerable French lady detective who falls for the big, strong repressed American widower searching for his troubled, red-headed, danger-loving daughter who got involved with handsome Arab possible terrorist she met on a train...)From the very exciting beginning it's fast paced, high energy, action packed, full of s...more
I really liked this book. Set in post-911 France/Morocco/Czech Republic, this book is very well written. From the beginning, when Pat went to get Megan's body and realized that the body wasn't hers and sets off on his quest to find her to Megan's story, which honestly scared me in some points.
There were numerous twists and turns in the plots. Some obvious and others, like the terrorists killed Uncle Daniel and the ending, which surprised me. I liked how the characters were rea...more

I get a sense of the mystery of this book by looking at the cover: The lady on it ... is it Catherine or is it Megan? Why is she standing in a hallway all by herself? Is she looking for someone? Waiting on someone? Is she friend or foe?

Great book! Thanks to the folks at Amazon for recommending this one, because I don't know if I would have picked it up otherwise. But I'm glad I did. It kept me turning pages my entire flight to LA.

I downloaded this book just to show a friend how easy it is to get books on my iPad....I didn't look at the summary or read any reviews or anything. It was such a nice surprise to find it a really enjoyable read!
I like mysteries for fun, and I love stories that are told from different points of views or that move through time. This one is told from two points of view, one beginning in the past and the other in the present. Then the two meet for a climactic ending.

This is a remarkable thriller about a father and daughter and the hunt for terrorists. Pat Nolan comes to France to identify the body of his estranged daughter who had committed suicide. Although, he tells the authorities that it is her, he knows it is not and starts a search for her. Chapters alternate between the father and daughter and the reason why his daughter faked her death. Is she a terrorist as the authorities believe or is it something else as Pat searches for answers. This reader got...more
I downloaded this book for free off Amazon. I wish Amazon had a return policy for these sorts of books.
Lousy book. Characters are either confusing (the father), vanilla (the french cop who falls for the father or downright unlikeable (the daughter). The plot lines (love story, international terrorism intrigue) are forced and/or weakly developed. So much more could have been added to make this story a winner, like some background information to make the reader understand character...more

I've had this for a while now. I got it as either a low cost or free offer from Amazon and have had it in my "to read" stack for a while. I really enjoyed this much more than I expected that I would. The author has created characters that I found myself caring about. Yes, it is a "thriller" so we are presented with the obligatory action sequences. But, he has kept these more believable than most. There are some typographical and grammar errors as noted by some other reviewers...more
Words like riveting, compelling and page-turner are so overused they have become less than they should be. The problem here is they describe this suspense thriller rather aptly.
James LePore has created a plot so gripping, so absorbing that you literally cannot put it down and on occasion even begin to imagine yourself in the character’s situation.

This book contains all the elements of a great thriller, suspense, foreign locations, terrorists and a touch of romance. LePore had me hooked from the very first page and kept me turning the pages until I found myself with no more pages to turn.
The characters have a slight touch of believability to them and I think this is because the reader can relate to the baggage that all the characters are carrying around with them. This baggage added reality to the novel and this helps to add ...more

A World I Never Made is based on an interesting premise- dad finds out daughter is dead but not only does it turn out she's not but she's in some big trouble. Sadly enough, while I enjoyed James LePore’s newest thriller in some ways, it ended up not being the book for me for several reasons in the end.

I like reading suspenseful books but I wouldn’t consider the suspense genre a favorite of mine. Still there are times when I come across a suspense novel that I enjoy a lot more than I thought I would. After reading the synopsis of A World I Never Made I felt I’d have a pretty decent reading experience. But it wasn’t long after I actually started the book that I got sucked into the story. The premise of the story is what first got my attention. Pat Nolan is sent...more

Paris is one of those hot bed cities for international thrillers. Joining the ranks of The Bourne Identity and The Da Vinci Code (among others) is A World I Never Made, the debut novel by James LePore.
The novel starts with an apparent suicide and an estranged father being forced to come to Paris to claim the body of a daughter who will forever remind him of his wife's untimely death. The book though is no simple suicide investigation; the body in the morgue isn't Megan.

The basis of the book sounded great and the book had the potential to be a great story. However, the characters and story line did not fully develop and left me wanting more on the story. The plots and characters seemed forced and not true. The love interests (the dad and a the french cop) were very hard to believe especially on how quick they moved in the relationship.
Overall, it could have been worse, but I won't spend he time reading it again.

Why, oh why do I feel compelled to finish something even when it's garbage? Ugh.
Filled with typos, stereotypes and bizarre sentence structure choices, this book was...not good.
On the other hand, it was $1.99 on Kindle and passed the time acceptably while I was at the laundromat.
But, yeah, not recommended. Unless you like thrillers filled with scheming Roma, terrorist Muslims and super tough (yet emotional) Americans.
Oh, and haughty French people.

This was an easy read that was enjoyable at best. The style of writing, with multiple timelines saved it from being entirely typical. As did the nature of some of the characters that made them rather unlikeable but still intriguing. However, parts of the story were rushed and the way the story unfolded really was too predictable to make this anything more then a quick read for me. This would be a good lazy day beach read.
This was a crisp, well-written thriller. Pat Nolan comes to France to identify the body of his daughter but, instead, begins a hunt for her. Megan is on the run from both terrorists and the intelligence community. Pat joins forces with French police detective Catherine Laurence as they travel across Europe on Megan's trail while trying to elude both the terrorists and intelligence officers who hope they will lead them to Megan.
