As Sara begins her new life in Boston, attending a very exclusive and academically intense private school for only the most gifted of students, she has a lot on her mind. First there is her mother’s recent desertion and the scandalous, hurtful circumstances of her departure. Then there is her father and what appears to be a flare up of his obsessive-compulsive disorder. On top of all of that is the arduous workload at Anton High and the awkwardness of trying to More...

I really enjoyed this book because it took a completely different spin on the often used private school/popularity storyline. I found it really interesting that the author chose to set this story at a school for geniuses, where the stakes are a bit higher and its each student for themselves as they compete to get into the best colleges. I enjoyed the fact that even though there weren’t the typical cheerleaders or “popular girls,” the social hierarchy remained strong and we saw a new type of mean More...

Little Black Lies
Book Review
By: Samantha Rundle

The book “Little Black Lies,” is a teen novel used to express the difficulties of a teenager moving from one city to another. In this book the protagonist, Sara Black, moves schools because her parents went through an awful divorce. Her mother now lives in Paris, and she lives with her father. Her father, Charlie, gets a new job as a janitor at an elite school called “Anton High.” This school is for the all “famous kid More...

Sara Black brings another shade of colour into her kind of white lies. Little Black Lies, a novel from Tish Cohen, tells the journey of a domino-effect of fibs told by Sara in an attempt to create a past she never got to have. Wiping the slate clean, she is a new student to prestigious Anton High School, the students informally named “ants”, and given the chance to make friends with popular girl Carling Burnack, with whom Sara shows infatuation for. Meanwhile, the protagonist’s ailing father is More...

After I read the beginning, I already got the sense of the book’s theme. It is about how one lie can leads to a thousand more. However, the unique difference that I found after I read further on is that, the protagonist, Sara Black’s lies are understandable and I might do the same if I was her. Sara got into a very popular school that is full of wealthy students but sadly, her mother left with another man to French and her OCD father is a janitor. In order to fit in to her environment she tells More...

At the outset it appeared that Little Black Lies was the typical “awkward new student outcast lies to fit in with the popular crowd” story. However, after a few chapters the reader is quick to realize that there is a bit more to the story than just this young girl adjusting to a new school and new friends. The addition of her father’s struggle brings with it the most promise.

I think I’ve mentioned before that books that focus on the father/daughter relationship are important to me. More...

Little Black Lies was a wonderful read! It wasn't that hard to get into at all and by the time your halfway through with it, it's hard to put down! First off, I'd like to mention that one of the reasons I was drawn to this book because it takes places in Boston, one of my favorite places and it has to do with a private school -well, technically this school isn't one, but it might as well be. And Tish Cohen does this neat little thing with the chapters, she starts them all out with a quote about More...

Sara Black is so not thrilled about moving. In fact, she’s not too thrilled about her life either. Her mother recently ran away to France with her new boyfriend, and her father’s OCD has been getting worse since her mother left. Now she has to leave behind her best friend and shot at valedictorian in Lundon, Massachusetts when her father takes a job as a janitor at the elite Anton High in Boston. Anton is no ordinary school. Sara’s new classmates make her intelligence look average and live for c More...

Junior Sara Black has just been admitted to Boston's Anton High, one of the most elite and competitive schools in the nation. Despite Sara's off-the-charts smarts, her admittance comes thanks in no small part to her father's new job as janitor at the school. In a school that typically only admits freshmen, a new girl is quite out of the ordinary. Sara begins lying - to hide the fact that she has no money, that her mom just left the family, and that the OC More...

It's always a tricky thing when you have a plot that relies so heavily on lies like this. For me, I always get this anticipatory nervousness for the characters at every scene, waiting for them to be revealed. Despite this feeling during Little Black Lies, I really did enjoy the book as a whole.

The setting first of all, is so entertaining. Anton High is a very elite school where nothing less than perfect is good enough. Of course, this provides a whole cast of unique characters while More...

Little Black Lies was a light read that a wide range of teens will enjoyable. It's a well written book that is 100% believable. That was one reason I enjoyed it so much, there was never a moment where you were thinking, "That'd never happen."

Tish Cohen’s books may be labeled young adult, but I find her work to be easily sophisticated enough for adult reading—certainly for those of us who are parents and may want to delve deeper into the minds of our youth. Cohen’s understanding of those young minds is uncanny. I’ve been a fan since my introduction to Cohen about a year ago, reading Inside Out Girl, and in fact, was inspired to learn more and so interviewed her as feature author for The Smoking Poet at that time. Reading Little Black More...

This story starts off a little slow but eventually picked up as Sara finds herself falling deeper and deeper into her web of lies. This book portrays well the pressure teenagers face when wanting to fit and the lengths they will sometimes go to be a part of the "in crowd". Little Black Lies start out a bit dull for me but developed into something interesting towards the end. In the end this was a good book with a few twists and adorable scenes. We can say this entire book does a great job on the word “karma”. Karma is a bitch isn’t it?

A few white lies, turning to black, and bam, all hell goes loose. This is what Sara goes through. One thing that I really found refreshing is that the main character (Sara) didn’t get away scot free. There are consequence More...

Sarah has moved to another part of Massachusetts. Her fathers OCD worse than ever is driving her mad. He has accepted a new Job as janitor of a school, only worse, the school Sarah will be attending. O her journey she meets the famous Carling. Her whole life is a lie now, lying to her dad, and her friends.
I can make a text to text connection, in Private by Kate Brian, Reed tells little lies, but in this Sarah's WHOLE life is a lie. Sooner or later they will find out.

I must say this is probably one of the best realistic fiction books I've read lately. I loved the story - the little lies Sara kept telling to fit in - and how things turned out in the end.

This book has a list of great issues in it - divorce, OCD, starting over, and honesty.

I can't blame Sara for wanting to fit in at the new ritzy school she is attending. Why admit your dad is the OCD janitor, when you can pretend he's a brain surgeon?

Although set in a school More...

The book "Little Black Lies" is about a girl named Sara Black, and how she lies about her life to fit in at Anton High, a "smart kid" school. Although Sara is a bright student, she is overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of work left by her teachers at the new school. The reason that she had to switch schools is because her father, got a new job as a janitor at Anton High. Her father, Charlie, has OCD and it became worse when her mother left. So Little Black Lies? What can I say but that I loved it. It was well written, funny, sad, loveable, it was everything a terrific book should be. The characters were great- well developed with strong personalities and it was hard not to like the main character, even with her lies. Although I liked her, there was always something nagging in the back of my mind about her that I didn’t care for. I didn’t like that she went to such lengths just so people wouldn’t find out she lived in an apartment w More...

A very interesting setting - a nerd elite public school - one that I would not have though of at all. Little Black Lies is filled with the seemingly never-ending high school drama and ordeal.

Crimes and Deceit: Columbine and Little Black Lies

Transitioning between reading books can be difficult, especially when moving from something intensely dark and thick with facts to a far lighter read, such as a young adult (YA) book with a partially pink cover. Or, you may be surprised by their connective tissue.

This week I transitioned from Columbine by Dave Cullen, a deeply disturbing analysis of teenage killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, to Little Black Lies More...

I absolutely loved Little Black Lies! The main character, Sara, takes lying to a whole new level, and, while I don't think I could take it as far as she did, Tish Cohen mades it easy for me to understand Sara's actions.

I really appreciate that the author incorporated OCD into the plot. OCD is one of those conditions that everyone knows about, but many people haven't experienced first hand. I could imagine how debilitating it could be for the individual with OCD, but I never really co More...

In an effort to fit in at her new school, to erase her parent's divorce (and the shame she felt when her mother ran off with the husband of the school's most popular teacher), and to hide her father's OCD, Sara tells some little lies. Black lies, obviously, because they're not the ones we call white lies.

This is one of those wanting-to-be-part-of-the-popular crowd stories, with consequences. Of course the girl she wants to be friends with most, Carling, is also the prettiest and me More...
