It only explained pregnancy, not conception. Sister bear is what, 6 or 7? I'm pretty sure that's an okay age to be discussing sex. Over all the book was disappointing. I also found it a little bit annoying how the book kept saying "Sister could accept that". Regardless of whether or not she could "accept" truths of life, it's the truth! A better way of saying it would have been "Sister understood that", but even then I didn't understand why the book kept on having to repeat Sister's reassurance....more

This was an acceptable effort toward introducing young children to the concept of birth. On the other hand, I found it disappointing; it doesn't address "the birds and the bees" at all, though the title implies otherwise. It only deals with pregnancy and delivery, not conception.

The reason is obvious: teaching children of any age about conception is in many places incredibly taboo. I don't agree with that, personally, and think it's far preferable to introduce children to the scientific idea of...more

I read the book apparently after this one was made that is about the baby. I think it was a great idea that Stan Berenstain made two books about babies. This one explains to the readers how a baby grows in a mother's womb and how it comes out. I think this book answers questions children have, and if the parents are having difficulty answering, try reading this book to them.

When a mama bear's lap
slowly disappears,
she has some special news
to tell her little dears.

Mama Bear is expecting a baby and Sister has a lot of questions. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but would be appropriate for younger children.

This book can be paired with New Baby and Baby Makes Five.

LOL-not to descriptive but ok for us especially with the baby coming it helps them understand enough- and not to much :)
Melanie
A cute book for explaining pregnancy to toddlers without being scary.
