Oh god I'm so embarrassed that I read these but there you have it: I did. And they added to my understanding of the Magick Sekrit Romance Formula, which is, as practiced in these books, as follows:
1. Improbable (and overweight, interestingly enough, a reflection, I guess, of contemporary America) heroine who is nothing like any 18th century miss would be. "I won't wear corsets!" she may say, or, "I won't obey any man! I want a job!" Yeah. Uh huh. Good luck in 1750 with that attitude.

With the title I should have known I would be rolling my eyes a lot. Let me tell you I am tired, very tired, of the blustery hero. The kids and their issues were actually the highlight, I usually can't stand the portrayal of kids in adult books, but the brats grew on me. The thing that ruined their characters came at the end of the book when suddenly they were philosophizing like 'adults' or rather in a tone I found very hard to believe to be coming from a child. Don't get me wrong I am well awa...more
Responsible & average-looking 23yo heroine gets mistaken for her impulsive twin sister by the brother of the man her sister wants to marry. Heroine's reputation is compromised when others find out that she & Hero spent hours alone in his carriage. They're forced to marry each other & both agree to live together in Hero's estate for 3 months to give gossip a chance to die down. They consummate their marriage & realize that sex is 1 area they agree on & enjoy. Hero puts limits...more
I first ran into Karen Hawkins through a novelette she wrote for "The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown." I enjoyed that story quite a bit, and ever since, have been trying to capture that magic in her novels. I'm afraid I'm 0 for 2 so far on her novels, though. It's not like this book was actively bad -- it was close to 3 stars -- but I stopped reading fairly close to the end because I just didn't care. Neither of these characters came alive for me, and the romance between them felt almo...more
I read this in a few hours, and it's a pretty average (generic) historical romance... Not bad, but despite a somewhat promising beginning, it follows a pretty predictable plot line... It's a good easy read, and doesn't take a whole lot of effort to get though it.
One thing that bugged me was that the story pretty much kept to the H and h's POV for the first half of the book, but by the second half KH kept bringing other people's view points in! And even though I liked the beginning, I can't help...more

Actually this book was better than the first. I skipped the 2nd due to bad review and headed straight the one that attracted me to the series
Hero & Heroine fall into a scheme that was meant for their siblings (His Brother/ Her Sister) Catriona is thoroughly compromised and Hugh must marry her. This is the story of their forced marriage ..

The best thing I can say about this book is that it's a quick read. Of course, that may be because when I'm bored by a book, I tend to read it really quickly, in the hopes that it will get better.
It didn't.
My chosen word for this book is "pedestrian". It's not just that the story's dull -- it actually could've had some potential, except that Hawkins seemed to shy away from potentially interesting plot twists rather than embracing them. But the storytelling itself is utterly lacking as well. This...more

I picked this up after reading the Hurst series, curious about Catriona and Caitlyn. I thought the story was okay but I really didn't like Hugh.
Again, I seem to have a problem with the MacLean males as I also didn't like Alex either. There is an edge to them that I can't reconcile and made all the other parts hard to swallow. And it seemed to cross a line of inherent decency that couldn't be redeemed in my eyes.

This book gets an extra star for Hugh and his big heart and the fact that there was a more serious theme going on that made me tear up at times.
In this book Hugh, the most in control of his curse among the MacLean brothers comes together with sensible and passionate Caitriona Hurst.
Well, their thing starts with a misunderstanding where the two are forced into a marriage but they can hardly deny their attraction to each other either. Hugh brings Caitriona to his home where he keeps a few secrets...more

Aku suka. Titik.

Another good book in this series of the MacLean Siblings who are cursed with a temper that can change the weather. In this venture, the second son, Hugh meets his match in Catriona Hurst.
Triona has come to London to thwart her twin sister Caitlyn from ruining the family name by being caught in a compromising position by Laird Alexander MacLean who she has vowed to marry. Instead it is Triona who is caught by Hugh MacLean when he thought he was teaching Caitlyn a lesson. They are forced to marry...more

I rather enjoyed this book. Catroinia Hurst (Caitlyn Hursts twin sister) rushes to London in to order to save Caitlyn from ruin. In trying to help she her own virtue is in jeopardy and she is forced into marriage of the brother (Hugh) of the man (Alexander) Caitlyn was trying to trap into marriage.
At first it was a marriage of convenience so her reputation would not be ruined - she did nothing wrong but to try and help her sister. As time goes on she is falling in love with Hugh. Hugh does not...more

Triona & Hugh were a match made in heaven. Both are very stubborn and very much in to protecting their family. It was because of this trait that their paths crossed and they ended up married. It was a fun read, especially when Triona was trying to win three "brats's" affection even though she was told to keep her distance from them. I've read the other books in the series and I have to admit, next to How to Abduct a Highland Lord, this has got to be a fave of mine. Can't wait to read about A...more
The Hurst siblings all care and watch out for one another, but when Catriona’s twin sister Caitlyn plans to make Alexander MacLean marry her, she has no choice but to stop her. Caitlyn has always been the wilder of the two. Catroina is practical while Caitlyn is a great beauty and doesn’t think before she acts. And with Caitlyn staying with their Aunt Lavinia in order have a season in London, Caitlyn doesn’t have anyone to keep her out of trouble. Catroina will have to stop Caitlyn from making a...more
One of the first in the Hurst series, I'm working my way backwards. It was a good romance, featuring Triona and Hugh MacLean who can control the weather with his temper. That alone could have been worked to be a more interesting angle for me, but bad ideas abounded instead, first with their simultaneous meeting and ruination, then with Hugh's decision to not tell Triona about the kids. It had "ugh" written all over it. Then it was such a quick ending that I didn't feel any closure. I'm glad I re...more
I have to say it was a very fast paced read. You know, when I first read the summary i thought that is all it was to the whole story. I mean the second book I read of this series was kind of stuck at a certain time. Compared to that, this book was very smooth. So much happened after the carriage ride.
At time I was annoyed at Hugh, but I liked Triona. I wouldn't say I loved either of them, but it was a interesting read. I kept turning pages and I kept reading although at times when I hated it. A...more

When Catriona Hurst hears from her aunt, that her twin sister is in trouble, the kind that could cause a great scandal especially to the family, she rushes to London. But when told of her current scheme, Catriona tries to save her, but in the end gets caught up in a trap. Hugh MacLean finds out about Caitlyn's scheme to trap and embarrass his brother, so when he tricks a woman who looks similar to Caitlyn, not realizing its her twin sister instead. He then exchanges a passionate embrace with her...more
This is the only book I have read in the series and did not realize that it was part of a series when I picked it up, though the family tree made it clear once I opened it up and began to read.
The personal relationship between Hugh and Caitriona was interesting and I enjoyed watching them both work their way through to what they wanted from their marriage. I think it would have been more interesting if they had done that without the "curse."

I really like Karen Hawkins writing, and I really enjoy series books.
Admittedly, it has been quite a while since I read the previous books in this one, but the story was entertaining enough for me to keep up with the action, with out feeling too lost in the back story.
Hugh was a great guy, if a bit immature about marriage ideals.
But He got on very well with Catrionia, and I knew they would make a great couple, once Trionia set him straight about how things would work.

3.5 Stars! I read the first book in this series like 4-5 years ago. From what I can remember, I enjoyed it, but the series must've slipped my mind, because I've never sought out any of the others. Then back in December or January, in a thread about older heroes and younger heroines, someone mentioned The Laird Who Loved Me and it caught my attention. I decided I wanted to read it, and put it on my wishlist, along with the others in the series. I just so happened to find this one first. I usuall...more

Catriona rushes to London to save her twin sister Caitlyn from ruin, and ends up in a compromising situation with the brother of the man that her sister was trying to compromise. It's all a comedy of errors - Hugh is out to trap Caitlyn in her own scheme and teach her a lesson, and Catriona thinks it's Laird Alexander in the carriage that she gets trapped in. (Are you confused yet?!) But the trap is sprung on these two, so of course Hugh must propose, and of course Catriona must marry him. Since...more
Karen Hawkins is a must read author. She's in my top 5 favorite historical/highlander romance authors. Everytime I pick up a book of hers, I know I'm in for a good read.
3 1/2 stars! Catriona was a pleasent character to read. Smart, funny, realistic and accommodable. Not many ladies back then would sit in a carriage for days without much rest or comfort. Catriona was reasonable and charming. I enjoyed reading along with her.

I really enjoyed this chapter of the MacLean curse. I loved the whole mistaken identity part at the beginning which was the whole reason for the marriage between Caitriona and Hugh MacLean to begin with. I loved how Hugh's very guarded heart melted for Caitriona throughout the story. It was heartwarming. I also loved that when Hugh's daughters played tricks, he saw right through them and didn't blame Caitriona. Overall, I really liked the story, but my favorite is still the first book, How to Ab...more
Nice ending n nice story.

Karen Hawkins is an award winning New York Times and USA Today best selling author of historical and contemporary romance. She writes full time from her home in Florida while consuming copious quantities of Diet Coke and surrounded by two very large rescue dogs and one very cranky rescue cat.
