This book was a little depressing. It's about a woman that comes home from a business trip and is served divorce papers from her husband and while she was gone, he arranged to have full custody of her children. The book is about her fight through a corrupt court system to win her children back. I was looking for a "light" read after my last few books, but it was depressing to know that some parents have this battle when divorcing. Not a light read!
Quick read and a bit unsettling. Tells of a successful woman, who seemingly has combined motherhood, marriage and business.. When she returns from visiting her terminally ill mother in another state, she is served with a court order that gives full custody of her children to her husband and evicts her from her home. As she fights the unthinkable, she finds strength and resources within herself that she didn't know she had. Things don't make sense as she and her newly hired lawyer fight an up...more
Now this was a "good" read!! Arrgh, I was so, so ticked at Dennis, the husband!!

The book brought me to a place of pure surprise. I never thought that a woman who tried to have it all and seemed sucessful at it could lead to such a good read. Claire Raphael worked hard as a wife, mother and business woman, and had it all turned around in a moment. The moment her husband served her divorce papers with an order to vacate their home and a summons to see the judge the following week. I was like no he didn't. I enjoyed how Claire came to examine her life, her husband and her role...more
While it was enjoyable enough to read, I found A Woman's Place to be more like a Lifetime movie with a big theme laid on with a trowel and cardboard characters that drove me nuts.
To be fair, this was written in the 1990s so the scenario of a successful woman being victimized by a prejudicial court system to strip her of custodial rights to her children could certainly have been relevant. I just felt that the author was highly manipulative and heavy-handed in her characterizations. After a...more

This is a story about Claire, who has worked very hard to build her own business into a very successful one, while raising two children, and loving her husband, even through his failing business dealings. While on a business trip, she walks into the front door, soon to be served divorce papers, an order to vacate the house, and her husband wants sole custody of the kids. Totally a shock!

Claire is a successful owner of a wicker company with franchises around the country. While away taking care of her sick mother, her husband, Dennis files for divorce, gets the house and the kids. Claire goes to her business partner, Dennis’ best friend Brody for comfort. A battle for the kids ensues, Claire falls in love with Brody, and by the end, Dennis realizes all he had and has now lost as Claire gets joint custody of the kids.
Three Thumbs UP!! This book was excellent. The author really made me feel Claire's bewilderment and pain. To come home after visiting your dying mother to have your husband kick you out and take away your children by court order? I felt it. It was frustrating but believable the fight she had to get her kids. Corruption is out there and unfortunately not everyone gets a happy ending. I'm glad this story had one though.
Imagine that you own your own business, have an almost perfect husband, two wonderful kids, a nice home and you go away for two weeks to visit your dying mother and extend your time away on a business trip. THEN you come home to find your husband, Dennis, handing you divorce papers, a court order to vacate your home, and that he has custody of your children. You had no clue that he was planning to ambush you. What do you do? I found this to be a well written story with descriptive insights ...more
This book starting out making me angry, so angry that I didn't know if I was going to be able to finish it. This was in the first quarter of the book. I decided to give it a little longer, and was glad that I did. The writing wasn't the problem, I just didn't enjoy reading about how horrible the main characterw as being treated. Good book, but not a light, mindless read. The book was thought provoking, and drew me in.
This book actually is what made me start reading out of high school, I found the main charcater so inspiring, I haven't been able to find this book anywhere!!!! She made me proud to be a woman, and at the time when I was 17 I found her to an amazing woman, she is inspiring!
As a rule, I love Barbara Delinsky's books, but I found this one overlong and boring. It felt dated to me and was not surprised when I found out that it is a reprint of a '96 book. Three quarters into the book, I gave up and skipped to end. For die hard fans only.
Delinsky portrays divorce with accurate detail. The discussions, the turmoil, the different stories and the unfairness of what is accepted in court is amazing. These guardians are horrors, resentful and since they are just people, they have biases, likes and dislikes that have nothing to do with the children. Excellent portrayal of the judicial system and its slow ugly treatment of women in divorce. Excellent read.

Barbara Delinsky writes novels about women and their lives and loves. Although Delinsky’s characters aren’t as rich and famous as Danielle Steel’s tend to be, she may still appeal to you.
I liked the book. As a mother, it was hard to not get emotionally involved with the main character and her fight for her children. It was so frustrating at times that I wanted to skip to the end to see how it turned out.
I couldn't put this down! So many tragedies happening to the main character, she had to struggle upstream nearly the entire read!
Just finished this one last week and it was SO GOOD! I love Barbara Delinsky!
Predictable but entertaining read.
A common story told well.
I really loved this book a must read for all women.

I really liked this book despite it being a bit depressing. It was also very predictable. I like her books and find her to be one of my favorite light reading authors.
A woman's as tough as she needs to be, whatever life may throw at her. SUCH A GOOD BOOK! Cover is misleading because this book is very poignant and worth reading.
Amazing book! I read it fast. I felt this womans frustration & couldn't wait to get to the end & find out what the outcome would be. This book is the book that got me interested in reading once again.
This book was frustrating. I really just kept reading out of curiousity although I sort of expected the ending.
This book was very good. It showed the true heartbreak of divorce and how children often get caught in the middle.
its a woman's story of a marriage gone sour, seasoned with betrayal, disloyalty, unhappiness, and greed.
A good story with a bit of a surprise at the end, but definitely would appeal more to women than men.

I was born and raised in suburban Boston. My mother’s death, when I was eight, was the defining event of a childhood that was otherwise ordinary. I took piano lessons and flute lessons. I took ballroom dancing lessons. I went to summer camp through my fifteenth year (in Maine, which explains the setting of so many of my stories), then spent my sixteenth summer learning to type and to drive (two sk...more
