For reasons that are entirely unclear to me, I have fallen completely out of touch with the writings of Walter Mosley. I read the first six Easy Rawlins mysteries, and enjoyed them very much. I liked RL's Dream, and was captivated by the two Socrates Fortlow books. At this very moment I could probably find hardcover copies of the three Easy Rawlins novels which I haven't read in the bargain bins at work; all this raises the question, what made me stop reading Walter Mosley? Was I dubious of th...more

well i finished this. it wasn't entirely easy (ha ha) because it's a dark, bitter novel about personal failure and social dysfunction. that people survive at all is due to occasional encounters with the milk of human kindness, in the form mainly of a) adorable little girls, b) women who are generous with their natural gifts and c) easy rawlins. too bad that easy rawlins seems to be pretty much at the end of his tether. one less source of kindness in the world.

mosley's indictment of the perva...more

Mosley is a very good writer and I enjoyed the story, it was a mystery which I typically like. The thing is, it took place in the late 60's ealy 70's and is told by a black man... so there are a lot of statements and remarks that were used in the writing (which were very true of the time) but made it hard for me to read because they are offensive and very racial. It was also a very eye opening read in that it made me think about reading (as a consumer) from the black perspective. Most books a...more

I've never read anything by this author before. This is a 10th installment in the Easy Rawlins series featuring a parade of multi-cultural characters from all walks of life getting themselves mixed up in criminal and romantic activities. I'm always interested in racial attitudes of the 50s-70s era, especially from the minority's point of view and this book is copious in that insight. There is an existential tone to it, especially when the story contrasts several large poverty stricken families. ...more

The tenth Easy Rawlings mystery just might be the end for Easy. If it is, I enjoyed the ride but I would still ask for one more because clearly, Mr. Mosely is still on top of his game.

Easy is searching for two friends whom he believes are in need of his help. Nevermind these are two of the most dangerous men one could know, Christmas Black and one Raymond Alexander, better known as Mouse. All of this is to hide his pain from making the love of his life, Bonnie, leave him for what he belie...more

This is the most recent of the Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley, one of my favorite writers. If you haven't read any books from this series yet, then I would recommend you start with the first one, Devil in a Blue Dress (yes, a movie was made out of this one) which takes place in LA in 1948. It's a crime novel that, in part, attempts to give us white readers a glimpse of what it is like to be an African American in the USA. Mosley has mostly written fiction, including science fiction, suc...more

Dammit. I wish this weren't my first Easy Rawlins book (I'm reading it for book group -- or, rather, I WAS reading it). I wish I could keep track of the different plot threads. I wish I could stick it out simply to see how this extremely complicated and interesting main character pulls it all together. I wish I were more into thrillers.

(Maybe I should change the name of this shelf from "didn-t-finish" to "may-come-back-to-later".)

First the bad...Mouse is only in a very small section of the book. As great as Mosley is, he should understand that Mouse and Easy go together like "Easy like Sunday morning..."

Blond Faith still have everything that you look for in a Easy Rawlins book, relationships between the races, detail discription of LA and a smooth dialog.

Mosely is a reliable storyteller and chronicler of LA life in the late 1960's. Having grown up in that decade, I know his voice is authentic. His perspective as a middle-aged black man is startling at times, but gives balance to the white history usually portrayed. Great author has written another exciting story.

I LOVED this book. Walter Mosley takes you to Los Angeles in the 1940s, 50s, 60s and sucks you right into his world of characters. It is supposedly the FINAL book in the Easy Rawlings mystery series. I can't imagine living without another one and hope that this story is a publisher's trick.

Love you Walter!

The latest Easy Rawlins story, the tenth, is the the very best of them all. Beautifully written with a stunning end.If you haven't read these books, start with Devil in a Blue Dress and then take them in order. It was hard to put down. I finished it during Thanksgiving weekend while visit the kids in LA.

Mosley's main character in the Easy Rawlins series is a black L.A. dectective in the 50's, 60's.
This is the last in the series. I'm devastated! He's my all time favorite character!

It's not his strongest, but there's some interesting stuff about Easy in there. And the ending...well, nothing's ever as final with Mosely as it seems, but damn.
