Basing themselves on oral and other primary sources and years of research, the authors take the reader through every step of the independence struggle from the abortive Revolt of...more

The book is quit intense , It's has 39 chapters and almost all catering to distinct events . After reading i am embarrassed to admit how less i knew about our freedom struggle . It's isn't a GK book with who when what sort of details ,though much more than it . It gives you the big picture and attempts to answer the obvious whys .Its sad that some of the fundamental ideas of the book will be limited to the audience of the book , i believe school kids should be exposed to some of the ideas albeit...more

India's struggle for Independence is Indispensable for students and for all those who want to know our past in order to understand our present (Views of Indian Express)
When I brought this book I had a second thought on whether to read it or not. But as they say don't judge a book by its cover. I did (by cover and note).
First impression which got when I read a note mentioned inside: I found the name of the authors mentioned on the cover in the descending order of thr contribution (in terms of cha...more

One of the best history books I have read so far. Indian modern history has never been so interesting for me before.
It not only state facts but also gives a justified analysis of the same. Explains action of all the important leaders very clearly and tells the reader what exactly made them do it. You actually can picture the era frame-wise with this style of writing.
This is also a great book for understanding Mahatma Gandhi and finally justifying why he is “The father of our Nation”.
A must re...more

This is my favourite book for understanding India's struggle to gain Independence from the British. Unlike regular history books, this book doesn't merely state bare facts but elucidates the facts in light of correlations and equations existing at the time, between the power players who were steering this Struggle.
This is also a great book for understanding Mahatma Gandhi and his role as the symbol as well as the leader of the Indian struggle, both as a political guru and a human being; and why...more

I am reading this book since last month. i started this because i thought i must know cost of my freedom and of course first time i realized how history can teach so much to you. and how it repeats it so many times and u never know it.
It has been written in totally informative way so sometimes it become boring to read it. but it give you a totally balanced and unbiased account of almost every event which have been part and parcel of our path to freedom. for me it was interesting to understand...more

The book is amazing...Though its a history book, the author at every moment has compared the work done by other authors on the respective subject. Also a fine critique of the work of other aurhors is given.

But there were few things which i didn't like in the book was..
* The author seems to me as a big fan of gandhi. The author at every mistake has defended gandhi, though sometimes allegations are too obvious and defending them was easy..but sometimes I feel as if the author is coming with his o...more

A must read. However, would suggest to read more if you want to read on this topic and understand the truth.

Thorough and informative, but biased and subjective.
Chetanbir Kaur Gill
Its a beautiful account of the national movement that culminated in a free and independent india.
The author is definitely not balanced in his analysis, glossing over all the mistakes, bad decisions, character flaws of the leaders; not mentioning or highlighting the role of a few very important figures like Mr Amberdkar etc. Flaws plenty, it nevertheless is a very powerful account and I recommend it to everyone.
I especially loved the chapters explaining the phenomenon of communalism and the one o...more

Indian modern history has never been so interesting for me before. This book presents it in very descriptive and linked form.Nice book but i must say its totally pro-congress.
Vikrant Dadawala
A good book, but I'd say the subaltern studies critique of this story has a lot of validity

Lucid, descriptive and tacitly written. The best feature of Bipan Chandra's writing is the root analysis of the phases in the struggle for independence- why, when, what, how, pros, cons... just everything covered.
You actually can picture the era frame-wise with this style of writing. A must for literary and history enthusiasts.

I found the book a bit too biased towards Congress. The perspective is clearly on Gandhi and Nehru, not paying much regard to others like Bhagat Singh, Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajagopalachari, etc.
However, the book is a delight to read mainly because it has given the basic facts a detailed look and explained things to their core. Thumbs up!!

Nice book from 1857 to 1947 history of India.
Has gone above academic style and delve more into circumstantial understanding.
But due to that, yes finer details are missed.
Good for understanding gross picture and an ideological march of civilisation.
Helps to build basic concept and grasp over principles underlying social movements

The ultimate authority on pre-Independence India. Amazingly well presented - the best book I've read on the topic. Not only is it a broad sweep of all the events from 1857-1947, it also looks into various social and religious groups chartering their evolution. The chapters on the rise of religion and fundamentalism were a revelation.

This was a book that was prescribed in my Graduation course. It was one of the first books that held my interest in college. It's a very well-written and detailed analysis of India's freedom movement. There are many interesting anecdotes, and the events are presented in a nice story-like fashion. I will be re-reading it soon.

Its really exciting...It starts with the sepoy mutiny of 1857, its great. Bipan Chandra writes with authority. I read the chapter on Gandhiji joining the freedom struggle in 1919 or so, its really well written.
Venkatesh Gaarlapati
Very comprehensive and informative. Only one disappointment is the way they ended the book and they didn't put much information from 1942 QUIT India movement - 1947. Apart from this, this book is excellent to know about great personalities and about our struggle for Independence.
Samrat
Its not a history of India's struggle for independence...but history of Congress masquerading as India sole mover for independence.......a good intro for a layperson not acquainted with the diversity called India and its struggle.

Superb!
Beautifully written (has a pace of a good fiction book!), well researched and very insightful! Gives you feel of 'India-in-the-making' and the hard fought struggle for our independence.

A must read!
Aashrith Sharan
a lot of people really don't know many things about our struggle for freedom and many freedom fighters who are undermasked and contributed to our freedom
Tanvi Sood
Very well written but cannot discount the Congress bias that runs right through. Overall, great intro to India's Independence struggle.
