i am probably going to spoil huge chunks of plot in this review. and i am okay with that. there is no way anyone is reading this book for the articles. this is just about the frequent and inexplicable intercourse between some bipolar couples and their friends.

I’m never sure how to review a book like this, because I don’t really go into it expecting a truly deep, emotional read and yet, that’s what I need to make the story work for me. On one hand, I know what I’m getting when I read these books – sex, and lots of it, but on the other hand, while I don’t feel an overwhelming desire to bring these cowboys home with me, I do care about their characters and want to see them be happy… but on the other other hand, I’m never really convinced they end up tha...more
I’m never sure how to review a book like this, because I don’t really go into it expecting a truly deep, emotional read and yet, that’s what I need to make the story work for me. On one hand, I know what I’m getting when I read these books – sex, and lots of it, but on the other hand, while I don’t feel an overwhelming desire to bring these cowboys home with me, I do care about their characters and want to see them be happy… but on the other other hand, I’m never really convinced they end up that way. So, knowing there isn’t going to be the kind of connection I need and that I’ll undoubtedly be disappointed – yet I read it anyway, I don’t feel that it’s fair to judge the book poorly based on my criteria for a truly great read, hence the 4 star rating which is really 3.5/5.0 stars

Maybe there’s something wrong with me – *gasp* Yes, dear friends and readers of this review, while highly unlikely it can’t be completely ruled out – but why do I always seem to need there to be some deep, dark secret which causes our hero and/or heroine to like things a tad more on the raunchy side? Why can’t someone like something more than missionary position sex without having to have had some horrific event in their lives screw them up so badly that vanilla just won’t cut it? Why can’t it just be ok to like being tied up and tied down, put on display or in this case, Rode Hard, Put Up Wet or whatever other consensual activity a couple decides to participate in? In truth the answer is, there’s no reason whatsoever, and it’s just me, my personality, to want to connect on some deeper emotional level with the characters, which there’s very little chance of in either of the first two books of this series. However, I’m not ready to throw in the towel… yet… and I’m hoping that I’ll find what I need – that bond with the characters that will have me cheering them on and hoping for their happily ever after in one of the next books.

So, all that Saturday morning self evaluation and reflection aside, I’ll just say that if you’re looking for some hot, sexy, kinky cowboy loving, and don’t need a compelling storyline or deeply tormented heroes with tragic pasts to justify their kink, be sure and check out Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series.

HOLY COW! I LOVED THIS BOOK! Not only do we get to read about Gemma and Cash getting into one HOT relationship, we get a two-fer with Cash's daughter Macie and her smokin' hot relationship with Carter McKay.

So now even though I’m up to book 9, I had a super fun time going back to the beginning and revisiting the delicious McKay boys before they all grew up, got married and started acting responsible and repopulating most of Wyoming. With Rode Hard Put Up Wet we of course get all-kinds-of-ways hot and steamy cowboy lovin but here we also get the added bonus of a two-four. As in 2 couples finding love and passion in 1 sexy story and how great is that!

We met our first couple; Gemma and Big Cash Crow in Long Hard Rideand although they’re older in the traditional sense (30’s & 40’s) both still very much have the “it” factor when it comes to spice in the bedroom. I loved their story and definitely preferred it out of the two. Cash even gave me a couple of *sigh* moments when he finally turned the lights on and opened his eyes… Their romance is about second chances, no matter what stage of life you’re in.

Explosive, impulsive, selfish, jealous, unsure, intense and at times downright annoying; Cash’s daughter Macie and self-centered artist Carter McKay as our second couple personified young love. This pair was all over the place with their emotions and a ton of fun to watch as I never knew what they were going to do next. I had a seriously tough time liking Carter though --as Macie often says “He’s a dumbass” Finding him immature and for the most part just an idiot. Cash on the other hand is all MAN...

Widow Gemma Jansen is looking for someone to help manage her ranch, luckily she knows just the sweet cowboy for the job. Cash Big Crow has just retired from the rodeo circuit and is looking to reconnect with his grown daughter Macie. Going to work for Gemma might be just the answer everyone’s looking for. Giving Cash and Macie the opportunity to settle in one place and get to know each other and Gemma the hired hand she needs. Of course before Cash agrees he has a few non-negotiable conditions; theres won’t be a strictly working relationship, Gemma might be the boss lady during the day but once in the bedroom Cash is going to be in charge, no questions asked.

To complete our foursome we’re also introduced to ranch hand and I’m too sexy for my boots/tortured artist Carter McKay. He takes one look at Macie and realizes he’s found his perfect muse. The artist in him begging to paint her, sculpt her and just plain have her. This doesn’t sit well with Cash, he knows all to well the reputations of those hard living, womanizing McKay boys and there ain’t no way one of them is getting near his daughter. Oh theres sure to be fun and games and even a few dust ups at the Bar-9 this summer.

As much as I enjoyed this it certainly wasn’t my favourite in the series and it took me a while to figure out why I was having a harder time connecting with this story. But with 2 couples and 4 POV’s it just wasn’t as tight. And with all the switching back and forth neither couple ever felt complete. Anyways, a very small gripe for another great instalment. (less)

First things first, you all should be very proud of me because it only took me a couple of days to read this one, whereas it took me a whole month to read the first! *does happy dance*

But down to my analysis of the book...I think the characters in this book might have been more ridiculous than the ones in the first. What a great story by Lorelei James. "Rode Hard, Put Up Wet" is a two-romance book. We get an older couple and a younger couple...doesn't get much better than that!! Word of warning tho, this book has oral sex, anal sex, vaginal sex, menage sex, sex with ropes, and sex with toys. YIPPEE!

I enjoyed this one probably about the same amount as the first book in the series. Though the two have a rather different tone to them. Long, Hard Ride had a sort of darker vibe to the book, and played around with BDSM a little bit. But Rode Hard, Put Up Wet has a softer feel to it. Gotta love hot cowboy sex and a good story to boot!!! gemma has reservations about being with Cash maily that she is older than him. But Cash has been in love with Gem from the moment he first met her a couple of years before. but she was just getting over the loss of her husband so Cash waited. Now he has his chance.

This one also has the story of Cash's daughter Macie and one of them Bad Boy mcKay's, Carter. But Carter is not the bad boy that they all think he is.

I gave this book 3 stars on the sex scenes alone. Gemma and Cash were good but they weren't great. I just plain didn't like Carter, his personality was so volatile, causing me not to care about his relationship with Macie. The best thing about Carter was when Cash beat him up. But it won't keep me from continuing with the series.

What a great book! Chock full of smut with an actual plot...go figure! Although this second book in the series is said to be Gemma and Cash's story, I thought it was more about Carter and Macie. Carter is the quiet and artistic McKay brother who has been waiting, quite literally for the girl from his dreams--enter Macie, Cash Big Crow's adult daughter.

Carter, the artist, was a mess, wasn’t he? In his defense I have to say he was pretty typical of artists, especially men artists. Some of you know this, but many of you don’t. I majored in fine art in college and was a professional artist (a painter) for many years before I became a novelist. Yes, I had agents, art galleries all over the country selling my paintings, solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, won lots of awards, etc., just like Carter. My art publisher (Haddad’s Fine Arts) still sells prints and posters of my paintings worldwide...you can find some of those and links to more of them on my books blog at http://www.LauraStamps.blogspot.com . I didn’t switch my career from an artist to a novelist until I was 30, when I realized I’d much rather paint with words than color from a tube.

Still, the insecurity Carter suffered from is very real. The art business is insane, and the pressure is intense. On top of that, no one considers being an artist (especially a painter) a real job, no matter how successful you become. Seriously. For example, when I was an artist, people would ask my husband, “Is Laura still painting?” Like it was just a hobby or something. But when I became a writer they would ask him, “What’s Laura’s latest book, and where can I buy it?” See? They thought that was a “real” job. What a hoot! So that same insecurity of Carter’s was very real, too.

Not to mention what egomaniacs many men artists are. Whew! I exhibited at my first outdoor art fair when I was 17, and I continued to exhibit at art fairs around the Southeast for another 13 years until I left the art business. It only took a couple of years for me to realize many men artists are a bundle of trouble. Because of my profession I was surrounded by them, but I never allowed myself to date one. The last thing I needed was to fall in love and marry one. Yikes! The artist couples I knew always had to deal with the egomania and intense competitiveness of the artist husband. Maybe that’s because the artworld is still a “boys club.” Whatever. All I know is I wanted no part of that, so Carter’s egomania was real too.

Now you know where all the art business stuff came from in the “Mirabella” section of my novel, “The Witches of Dixie,” don’t you? Yup, I’ve walked the streets of Soho in New York City, shipped paintings to my galleries all over the country, juggled commissions for interior designers, everything Mirabella did in that novel. And Carter, too. But unlike them I thank my lucky stars I’m a novelist now. The art business? No thanks! These days the only painting I do is for the covers of my novels, and that’s just fine with me. Yeah, I’m more than happy to let Mirabella and Carter be the famous artists. *grin*

And I have to say, sometimes I roll my eyes at the variety of sexual encounters that these people engage in. All right, so never in my life did I think I'd up pick books with this much explicit sexual content. And I have to say, sometimes I roll my eyes at the variety of sexual encounters that these people engage in. As my girlfriend recently asked me after reading some of her own erotica, wouldn't her muck hurt? I told her she had to suspend belief and move on. But that doesn't mean at times I'm not popping my eyes at what's going on in these purple passages. So, considering how detailed the sex can get, I'm amazed that there is not one but two romantic story lines in this read.

Gemma and Cash are great. I think they were supposed to be the main couple. But for me, Carter and Macie stole the show. Because I totally. Love. Carter. Like, I'm always falling for the broken heroes who are brought back to a state of joy by love. Who love intensely, even dangerously. But damn, these men who have the souls of poets are freaking irresistible. And Carter takes the cake in this department. Misunderstood artist? Yes. Brooding artist? Yes. Passionate artist? Yes. Half crazed artist wearing his heart on his sleeve and an absolute dumbass? Yes, yes that's Carter. I totally connected with his intense passion, and I understood how as the younger, dreamy boy in the family he took on the role of the quiet one. And how he thought no one understood him. Sometimes passionate people lose themselves in the agony of their emotions. It's very romantic, but damn uncomfortable and Carter spent a lot of time in this book being uncomfortable. He was only comfortable with Macie because she saw the real him. The intense passion that was inside him. That sex scene where he paints her body-literally, smearing paint on her and painting it all over her-was not, for me, hot. It wasn't one of the eye popping scenes. Nope, it was a scene where we see Carter, his intense passion totally exposed. I have to say James impressed me in her character development in this novel. Because as much as I got Carter, he wasn't the only character that I thought had depth. Macie was an intelligent, easy going character but she had intensity as well. A spirit strong enough to say to Carter, "hell no you are not showing nude paintings of me at the art show" and to leave him when he refused to cooperate. Yeah, artists are dumb like this. And when I use the word "artist" I mean people who create, whether it's a writer, painter, film director. People who create do have fits of madness like Carter does, so he's totally in character when his moods are swinging back and forth. And that's why Carter got his love for Macie way too mixed up with expressing his soul and his work and yeah, it wasn't his best moment, wanting to display the nude paintings of her; thank God he had Cord burn the paintings. No one can blame Macie for running scared and hurt from him. But that she really had both the spirit and the beautiful ability to look at Carter, see him, get him and accept him for who he was, is what I love about her, and that she stood up to him on this and let him know he'd crossed the line. I was delighted of course, when she let Carter win her back and made him flat out tell her why he loved her, and that she was every bit as passionate about him as he was about her. I loved that she was in love with him enough, and honest enough to call the crazy dumbass a dumbass to his face. It really was the only way to describe him when he was being such a sap slash jerk slash brooding moron slash stubborn idiot. So yeah, intense characters.

Plot wise, this story had way more meat than I thought. Pacing was good. Lots of flippant humor which I enjoy (another reason I love Macie) and two HEAs so I'm not complaining. Oh, and the ending? Perfect, perfect just perfect with Carter blabbing how much be loves Macie and going on and on about how sorry he is and thanking God he hadn't lost her? Love it. I seriously feel like I should take this off my erotica shelf and stick it in my romance shelf. But it's on my favourites shelf.

One thing I love about this series is that I didn't need to read the first book in order to be able to follow the second. Some of the characters from the first book make brief appearances, and it was nice to see them, but knowing or not knowing thier backstories would not affect this story.

One very hot book. Besides the hot and plentiful sex there was alot of emotional play at work. Gemma adjusting to the age difference between her and Cash, Macie learning to trust and accept that she deserves to be loved. Carter finally grew up and stopped his whining. The characters were all very believable and likeable.

A good second installment to this series. Two very romantic and creative couples! :) Be forwarned this book contains a M/M/M scene and M/F/M scene as well as lots anal play and all sorts of M/F variations! Whoo wee! Loved the first in this series so moved onto the next..

Cash & Gemma we meet in book 1 briefly but Macie & Carter are new.

I loved dynamic of the two couples in this book and really felt for the characters story.

I first read Lorelei James when her book Slow Ride was free on B&N. Within 24 hours I had all the Rough Rider series loaded onto my Nook and, within a week, I not only read them all but was half-way through them a 2nd time. I first read Lorelei James when her book Slow Ride was free on B&N. Seems I couldn't get enough of Rodeos, Cowboys or hot, sweaty cowboy sex. Yee-haw! I fell in love with every McKay and West and envied all of their girls and a few of their guys. I fell in love with the word “nekkid”and don't think I'll ever say the word “naked” again without hearing a cowboy twang in it.

In Rode Hard, Put Up Wet you get two, not one, hot cowboys and will want them both for yourself.

First, meet Gemma Jansen and Cash Big Crow. Gemma and Cash have been circling each other for 3 years. Gemma refusing to give in to what she may feel for Cash after her husband dies and Cash afraid he will scare Gemma off with his feelings and needs for rough sex keep them apart. Now, throw in Gemma's insecurities of being older than Cash and you have all the makings for a wild and fun ride through the fields of Wyoming. When they finally give in to what the other wants, you get an explosive, sizzling connection that neither one of them can deny. When Cash fulfills Gemma's fantasies, by bringing a surprise into their sexual relationship, Gemma realizes exactly what she really feels for Cash. Now to break down his barriers and get him to finally acknowledge that Gemma just may be able to handle him and will love him, no matter what. She finally finally takes the reins and gets him to admit all to her. What a powerful scene that was! I found myself yelling “You go girl” when she takes over in the bedroom.

Next, meet Macie and Carter. Whew, what a pair! No one knew Cash had a daughter until he showed up at a Rodeo with her. As he goes to talk to Gemma, Macie roams the Rodeo and catches Carter's eye. His muse – the girl he has been dreaming about. Carter is an “arteest” (as the rest of the McKay clan calls him) and he has been seeing this girl in his dreams and trying to paint her forever. Now he's found her but she thinks all he's throwing at her is pick-up lines. She has a past with a artist who turned out to be gay so she's not really sure if she wants to travel that road again. When they realize they will be spending the summer all together on the Bar 9 Ranch......well, things could get interesting! As Cash moves into Gemma's house, Macie stays in the trailer and Carter is told to stay away from Macie, tempers flare, jealousy rages and things heat up to unexpected temperatures. I don't know if my favorite scene is in the rain, with whipped cream, under the stars, or in the front seat of car. Yea, these two had some hot, kinky sex scenes that were explosive. Through all this, Carter is painting and sculpting Macie for his art show. What Macie doesn't realize is that he is painting her nude. When she finds out and then Cash figures it out, well, things get a little heated. It takes 4 days of drinking and the McKay brothers showing up at the Ranch for Carter to realize what he did and what (who) he really wants in his life...Macie. He finally figures out that his paintings are nothing without Macie being there with him.

Throughout the book, Lorelei James brings all four of the characters together with her wonderful writing. Yea, there's a lot of hot sex but, behind the scenes, you learn about each of the persons personalities. There are so many back-stories: Gemma and her insecurities and needing to let go of her past life; Cash's unrequited love (so he thinks) for Gemma and his feelings about being an absent father; Macie constantly hearing her deceased mother's voice in her head about where she stands with her dad and where her life is leading her; and, Carter's need for perfection in his paintings and feeling left-out of the McKay family because of his profession. She weaves a tantalizing tale of four people whose lives will be intertwined with each other, who got there through guts and determination and who will be there forever to support and love the other. Of course there's an HEA....there has to be with so much love, and Lorelei James knows just how to get them all to the point of realizing it, embracing it and enjoying it with so much gusto.

The exotic beauty that comes to the ranch with Cash and Gemma is just the inspiration Carter’s been looking for. While Gemma and Cash get themselves reacquainted, Carter is showing Macie that he can meet her every fantasy and desire.

It was great to see Gemma and Cash, whom we met in Long Hard Ride, have their story. Gemma has fears that she’s too old for Cash (her 47 his 38); and Cash fears that he’s just not good enough for Gemma, after all the years on the circuit he has nothing to show for it. Cash is a great hero, seeing what Gemma needs and giving freely. I was pleased that the second romance with Macie and Carter didn’t detract at all from Gemma and Cash’s story. Macie’s had to grow up pretty much on her own as Cash hadn’t really been in her life until she was a teenager. More than anything she wants to know what it’s like to have roots and family. Carter has roots and family, but he’s always felt he was an outsider, and misunderstood. He feels things intensely and this comes out in his art. It’s that intensity that binds him to Macie. Both romances are about second chances and fighting for the one you love. I loved visiting with Colby and Channing and the hot scene with Trevor, from book one. Hints are made that someday Trevor may have his own story, and the upcoming book with Cord McKay is nicely set up for book three. (less)

Things that are worse than reading this book:

1. Listening to Rick Perry or Rick Santorum on gay rights (Rick Santorum, by the way, wouldn't like this book because it encourages sex for other than pro-creation purposes).

2. Being ill in the hospital (I do have some perspective here).

My Take
It is nice to read an erotic romance about an older woman!

Another great book in this series! Plus it's three loves stories in one book, two romance and one father/daughter. Gemma goes and gets her cowboy Cash Big Crow to bring back to help run her ranch. She is having issues since she became a widow. He agrees with some dominant stipulations, he will be sharing her bed. He also doesn't hide the fact he is a no-back-talk/no-holds-barred type of lover. I was glad to read this after the tiny build up in Long Hard Ride.

I loved this one! Lorelei James got me hooked with this series I can't wait to read the next! But first, I'd like to give a rundown on why I enjoyed reading this in one sitting.

It's amazing how authors give a new perspective, there's Gemma, the widow whom we first read about in Long, Hard Ride, and how Channing nudged Cash Big Crow to just go for it, go for being together with Gemma. Things were subdued later on and we find them back together here, but wait, there's more! Cash's daughter (whom n...more I loved this one! Things were subdued later on and we find them back together here, but wait, there's more! Cash's daughter (whom no one knew except he and Trevor) is here hanging out with dad, and Carter McKay (Colby's brother).

It's a double whammy.

I didn't read the reviews, just browsed to check the ratings and I found myself reading page after page of fun-filled days in the ranch, getting the job done, Carter's artistry, Macie's independence, and Gemma and Cash finally getting it on. After reading about older woman-younger man romances, I didn't mind their age gap at all, sometimes I forget about it, only Gemma is conscious of it.

I have to admit the sex here is better compared with the first one. Things are a bit kinkier, more creative and raunchy. There's a dream m/m/m, m/f/m, a little bdsm, anal, and other naughtier stuff some of us just dream about. Then there's the good story. After all I've said one would thing that's all there is to it. No, there's a lot of emotion involved here.

I liked that Cash and Macie are making their relationship work as father and daughter, I was touched by those scenes where they always try to connect and spend quality time together. Carter is a different story, and the author really wrote him as someone complex, misunderstood, and left out by the family. I hated what he did, but at least he redeemed himself. He could really be sweet and romantic, but never boring when it comes to sex. I've always appreciated how their wild sides were written explicitly, and there's always the slow build where senses are engaged - touch, smell, sight, taste, sound.

I guess I'm drawn to this because of the family ties, the warmth of the characters and of course the hot and naughty sex, but to give Ms James credit, she really weaved a good story with a convincing plot. I noticed that in all of the sex scenes, both the man and the woman have a chance to shine and get the upper hand, unlike in others the man is always pleasured and the author writes about the woman getting the same by just giving, and that's not my cup of tea.

I loved the happy endings and I'm looking forward to other books.(less)

Cash and Gemma have been circling around each other a long time. Cash wants Gemma and she knows it, but she hides behind her widow status and age in an attempt to get Cash to leave her heart alone. But Cash’s terms are clear, he’ll work Gemma’s ranch, but only if she allows him to be in charge during after hours. Gemma agrees, though she knows it’s going to take time for her to re-adjust to the idea of being attractive to a man who wants, and can have, her when he wishes. Throughout the story, Cash helps Gemma not only re-build her business but also re-find her inner vixen and overcome her excuses of age difference and widowhood. In return Gemma gives Cash the thing he’s been looking for for years… family, love, and a home.

Since Cash has agreed to work Gemma’s ranch he also has to change plans with Macie, his daughter. Where they had originally intended to take a trip together to spend some time, Macie heads out to the Bar 9 with her dad. She meets Carter McKay who has also agreed to helping Gemma out at the ranch. Macie didn’t grow up knowing her dad too well. He was young when he got her mom pregnant and she ended up taking Macie away. Now Macie is taking her chance to get to know her dad, and even though it’s not the way she thought it would be she’s taking what she can get. Carter McKay is the youngest of his McKay brothers (he’s Colby’s brother). His calling isn’t in ranching like his other brothers, but in art instead. But when Gemma asked for his help he couldn’t say no. So Carter is staying in a trailer on the Bar 9 with a barn to use as his temporary art studio. Carter and Macie grow close, and while Cash isn’t very approving, they go about themselves anyway. All is not easy between the two, and Carter definitely oversteps his bounds a time or two, but in the end the two are able to claim their love.

I really loved reading Rode Hard, Put Up Wet. The big reasons are Gemma and Carter. The two characters are just so real. Gemma is so determined to make it, almost to a fault. Yet she realizes that she needs to exercise some humility and asks for help. It takes a strong person to do that. Another reason that I love Gemma’s character is her own self-doubts. As weird as that may sound, this is what I mean. She is a divorced woman in her late 40s. While I have never been divorced and am only 20, seeing Gemma come into herself again and feel good again, even with a man around ten years her junior was a delight. It not many women in her situation get that chance, so it’s good to see it happen. Carter on the other hand has moments where he plain doesn’t use his brain. While I usually shook my head and laughed at those moments, he really was just so blindly in love with Macie that he didn’t realize that what he was doing was idiotic. It was cute in an ‘Oh. My. God.’ way. His ability to admit his two left feet was also quite cute.

Again there was a high sexual tension (James actually manages this in all of the Rough Riders books) and many highly erotic scenes. They all fed into the relationships in their own way (another thing she manages throughout the series). There was the same deep emotional field in this book as the others. Moments where your laughing and crying with the characters. I love that kind of feeling in a book.

Watching the two couples learn about each other and grow together was very gratifying in this book, and when they become the strong couples that they are now, ten books in, is just plain awesome.(less)
