"Bajki robotów" to zabawne skrzyżowanie literatury science fiction i tradycyjnej baśni.

Mieszkam w Polsce prawie rok. Więc odrazu poszedłem do biblioteki, gdzie dostałem ...more

On some level, something must have gotten lost in translation from Polish to German, Lem being a hailed SciFi author and all. The significantly higher ratings in Eastern European seem to indicate that possibility. While the first story was still kind of whimsical, the ones after grew increasingly bland and formulaic. They read like run-of-the-mill fairy tales for toddlers with the added twist that most of the nouns are either replaced or prefixed with a term from chemistry, metallurgy or pre-IC ...more

I tried to like this, I tried real hard, and even though it seemed like the stories were getting better closer to the end, the best I can say about this is that it was okay in the end.

The first thing to remember as starting with this book is that these short-stories are just stories, stories and tales, which, by nature, are passed on from one person and generation and culture to another, which transform and change as they are told. This works as both an excuse and a reason to make the stories w

review of
Stanislaw Lem's Mortal Engines
by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE - July 28, 2015

I suppose, strictly speaking, this isn't 'a bk by Stanislaw Lem' insofar as it's a collection of short stories by Lem, united by the theme of robots, chosen by the translator, Michael Kandel, at the prompting of the publisher, Harvest/HBJ, so that there cd be a Lem bk in English that hadn't previously existed in Lem's language, Polish. I wdn't exactly say that that negatively effects the collection but it does

I... actually rather enjoyed this, even if I read it as a Finnish translation, which, no doubt, leaves much to be desired. All the more so considering the translation was done with the English edition as its base rather than the original Polish. I can't imagine that to ever be the desirable route for translating. What all is conveyed more or less off the mark in comparison to the original Polish edition? How much of all that could have been prevented if the translation had been made by someone f ...more

Stanislaw Lemin "Konekansan satuja ja tarinoita" sisältää tulevaisuuden faabeleita, opettavaisia "robottitarinoita". Suurin osa tarinoista perustuu teknisillä nimikkeillä kikkailuun ollen valitettavan köyhiä sisällöltään tai juoneltaan. Onneksi joukkoon on kuitenkin osunut muutama oivallinenkin tarina. "Automatiaksen ystävä" on ehdottomasti kirjan paras hetki. Tämän vajaan 30 sivun takia kirja kannattaa hankkia käsiinsä. Muut voikin sitten jättää lukematta.

“Mortal Engines” provides an interesting overview of both halves of Lem’s oeuvre. The first half or two-thirds of the book are more of the type of cyber-fables that appear in “The Cyberiad”, though with more variety. Some have a structure more reminiscent of Aesop’s fables, or Greek myths; others are far darker than anything in “The Cyberiad”, dealing with the eternal war of humans against their mechanical creations. Though some of these are quite good — “The Tale of King Gnuff” economically han ...more

Borrowed from Bill. It's Borges meets Katamari Damacy. ;D

It's a lot of fun to read; many stories are told like myths or fables, except they involve strange robot alien space race kind of fellas.

I somehow got it into my head I needed to read more Lem, but I suspect I like the idea of Lem more than I like the fiction of Lem. Which is not to say this collection of short stories is bad. But I can’t say I agree with the person who collated the collection, Michael Kandel, who loves Lem’s “robot fables” so much he chose to bring them all together into one book. Because while they’re clever little fairy tales, with one or two clever puns, they do get a bit wearying en masse. Happily, the book ...more

„ ...more

I was really excited to read this. One of the masters from the golden age of science fiction, who I'd somehow managed never to read! Alas. Most of the stories in this book are childish fables. The translator/editor says in the introduction that he wanted to collect Lem's stories about robots, but for the most part the only distinguishing robotic characteristic of these characters is that they're made of metal; were it not for references to rust here and there, they might as well be human, or som ...more

Collection of science-fiction short stories by Stanisław Lem, published with such a title for a first time in 1964 by Wydawnictwo Literackie. These short stories were written in a convention of fairy tales, but set in world of robots. Lem was great writer of science - fiction (but not only) and his books are gripping read. From the fabular points of view as Bajki robotów are classified:
- Three elctroknights
- Uranian ears
- How Erg Samowzbudnik defeated Bladawiec
- Treasures of king Biskalar

From what I've read a lot of this is probably better in the original Polish. I did enjoy the mixture of robotic sci-fi and classic fairy tale structures. Some of the stories were very engaging, others came across as needing to be fleshed out more. Frequently the sci-fi elements felt lacking. Not a must read, but encouraged me to seek out more Lem.

The book is a collection of novellas written in a style of fairy tales and fables. The twist is that the role of humans of fairy tales is taken by robots and the role of monsters by humans. The stories are not written in realistic style, but play with the concepts and words of science, computers and machines. The book is quite easy to read, but the level of the stories varies quite a bit. I found most interesting the novellas that depicted relations between machines and humans and the ironical w ...more
