One of my favorites by Sandra Brown. Both leads were intriguing and effortlessly pulled me into their complicated world on the verge of exploding. Sayre is a fantastic female lead, both strong and vulnerable, and it was great to watch her battle both her own and her family's demons. Huff, her father, filled the role of the tyrannical father perfectly, but as readers we were also invited deep enough to see how damaged he was and watch this mountain of a man fall apart as his world crumbled. An...more

Sayre Lynch left Destiny, Louisiana, a small town where she grew up, vowing never to return. Sayre started a new life as far away as possible from her controlling father and older brother Chris. However, after ten years Sayre returns for the funeral of her younger brother, Danny, after being told he committed suicide. While at the funeral, Sayre meets her family's newest partner in crime, Beck Merchant, a shady lawyer. Sayre takes an immediate disliking to Beck, but she is forced to have close c...more

Excellent suspense/mystery! I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out if a certain person or persons got their just desserts!!

From the dust jacket:

"When she hears that her younger brother Danny has committed suicide, Sayre Lynch relents from her vow never to return to Destiny, the small Louisiana town in which she grew up. She plans to leave immediately after the funeral, but instead soon finds herself drawn into the web cast by Huff Hoyle, her controlling and ty...more

I could give this 3.5 or 3.75, great mystery and wow - were there some major shockers where I was thinking "oh my - what a mind Brown has, I want to be her when I grow up". Her story telling abilities are just over the top. We have a corrupt family who's only daughter left 10 years before and never looked back. Now, contacted because her younger brother apparently killed himself. She goes back for the funeral and gets sucked into her brother's death and the thought that it wasn't a...more

After a slow start, White Hot picks up in the last third of the book. I honestly didn't care about the characters all that much until that final third and then I was only slightly connected. Much of the book, three men sit around during work hours and have a drink - and then after work hours. Two of those men are very wealthy owners of a steel plant and they don't care about endangering the lives of those who work for them. It's a far-fetched tale but, in true Brown style of the past ten yea...more

Dysfuctional is a mild word to describe the family named Hoyle, led by the evil patriarch Huff Hoyle. Ms. Brown smoothly tkes us into Huff's past as a child, where he witnesses his father being murdered by a man not unlike his adult self. Although this even provides us with motivation for the things that Huff Hoyle does, one doesn't feel sorry for him, nor does it make us justify his behavior.

The heroine, Sayre Lynch, hates Huff so much that at times her decisions are not wise. Fo...more

Sandra Brown holds true to the genre with main characters who tantalize the reader with their dangerous attraction. The two characters begin as enemies: Sayre, the estranged daughter who comes home only after her brother's death, and Beck, her father's lawyer and confidant. Sayre is on a mission to close the family business down because of the unscrupulous business deals that she does not want associated with her name. Beck is assigned to keep his eye on her and "handle" her if she cau...more

It never changes with Sandra Brown - you are hooked by the first chapter or or two of any novel she writes, then you can barely put then book down until completion. It's really impossible to guess who the bad guy is - ever, because when it comes to writing intrigue, Ms. Brown just about holds the patent.

WHITE HOT is the story of one man's success in owning a manufacturing company that is the livelihood of a town called Destiny, Louisiana. All of the men in the story seem nefarious in ...more

I met a woman at a book sale who recommended and searched out a copy of this book for me - said it was the best book she had ever read. Well...for me this was just another romance novel! Sayre Lynch returns to her hometown of Destiny, Louisiana (after being gone for ten years) for the funeral of her younger brother, Danny. It was thought that he had committed suicide, but it now looks like he was murdered. Her controlling and tyrannical father, Huff Hoyle, who owns the town's sole industry, ...more

I was a bit disappointed in this outing by Sandra Brown. I found the characters in this book fell a little flat, and were too black and white. The good were too good, the bad were too bad. I figured out the ending less than half way through the story, and found the pages turned very slowly. Not one of her better efforts.
The storyline involves Sayre Hoyle, who returns to her home town of Destiny after the death of her brother. Sayre has been long estranged from her family and the book explor...more

Yeah. So I got this book for free, and, as we know, I will read anything. This book got one star because I am not computer savvy enough to give it half a star. It may be trying to be a romance novel. It may be trying to be a mystery. It is failing on both levels. Hm. Poorly played, Sandra. Poorly played. You'd think I'd know better....

I was very lucky to be a First Reads winner, this book is so good.
This is my first Sandra Brown's novel and if her others are as good, I'm going to become a loyal reader.

White Hot is a real page-turner full of mysteries, secrets, suspense, emotions. Sandra Brown managed to capture the attention of her readers and not let it go until the very last page by doling information out. Ok, I have to confess that sometimes I was a bit frustrated because I wanted to know more and more quick...more

Good solid read. Kept stumbling over the main female character's name though - just couldn't seem to get a pronunciation in my head that I was happy with :)

Sayre comes home to Louisiana after swearing that she would never return 10 years ago. She despises what her family values and business stands for. She meets the new family/business attorney, Beck, and little by little she lets down her guard. As she tries to help the families that work for the Hoyle factory, she finds more of her father and brother's secrets.
As Sayre deals with her past and tries to picture a future, she is not necessarily safe from her family and some unsavory charac...more

All I can really say is wow. There was a whole lot of family drama, murder, and webs of lies in this book. Huff was a poor twisted soul, a man made by the sorry life he lead and choices he made along the way in his life. Sayre was a woman who had her choices taken away from her by a man who had to have it his way and only his way. Chris was a spoiled, selfish a**hole who only thought from between his legs and wanted to always be #1 in the eyes of his father. Beck on the other hand was the best s...more

another good one from Sandra Brown. i'm really enjoying these suspense romances. i used to only read her historical and contemporary romances but after reading a couple of her suspense novels i realize they are just as great. this one had a really interesting family dynamic and some great suspense. there was murder, surprise, secrets and of course romance. not to mention it helped me during my long 4hr drive to and from school everyday. the story moved along smoothly and kept me guessing. recom...more

First of all, thanks to Sandra Brown who sent me this nice book through the Goodreads giveaway. :)

Ten years ago Sayre Lynch escaped Destiny, her small Louisiana hometown. She was determined not to come back at any cost, even refusing to receive calls from her family. But when her brother Danny died, Sayre has to return to Destiny to attend his funeral. She planned to leave right after the funeral ends, but things are more complicated that she thought it would be.

Recommends it for: 16 yrs and up
Sayre, who is the main character of this book, was very angry and disillusioned by her father and brother(s)~she'd had enough of them and moved as far away as she could. 10 yrs later she gets word that her youngest brother~Danny~has died. This is why she decides to go back home~just one more time,to go to her brother's funeral. Danny had committed suicide. Or did he? It becomes clear that suicide couldn't be it,so homicide it is. But who did him in? From here on out, keep it in your mind that like...more

I forgot that I read this until I was invited to the Sandra Brown (and others) group.I was checking out some of the conversations and remembered this story. I loved the strong heroine. The setting and tone was also great, it was edgy and unsettling which always make for a good story. I remember being able to visualize her father's "plant" and its unsafe working conditions so well when I read it. It was a really good book!

I spent the first three quarters of the book trying to figure out why the heroine even was attracted to the hero, and the last 1/4 wondering where the "surprise twist" came from as there had been no indication that it might be coming. I know the best twists are out of the blue, but they make sense. This one didn't make sense.

I like Sandra Brown - she is an easy and entertaining read. This one moved right along for the most part with plenty of twists and turns during the final 50 pages. While enjoying, I did find the plot increasingly incredible and hard to swallow especially with the development of Beck's character. But, for a summer beach read, it went down easy and was mostly enjoyable.
Emily
I read one of Brown's other books and changed the rating lower. After reading this book I realized there was a higher element of surprise and interesting she had to offer to the plot. The other book, too predictable. This novel had interesting characters, a deadly plot. and a couple of intriguing surprises.

Yeah... baca kedua kalinya, rating ni buku naek jadi 4... Asyik asyik asyik. Ternyata ceritanya bagussss...

Guess what?...more

This one is very forgettable, none of the characters are likable even the main hero/heroine. This one in particular for me seemed to hit all the stereotypes. Now that I am done with it, I am not really sure why I kept listening to it, maybe because with only 5 discs it went fast.
