The first half of this book is excellent. Kazantzakis portrays Greek life under Turkish rule so well that I could feel and smell and see parts of the village. His characters act with vitality and motivation that feels true. One nocturnal scene in which the village women collectively feel the carnal urge while the men sleep uneasily in the heat will stay with me for life.

If one didn't have a dim historical view of Turkey already--and in light of the Armenian genocide, how could one not--this book will put any hesitance beyond doubt. But beside that it's a superb narrative, which is no surprise considering Kazantzakis' authorship. Remember Arkadi!

I really liked Kazantzakis' style and I enjoyed reading this book about the turmoil between Greeks and Turks in Crete. His writing is strong, inviting, and moving without being biased while giving insight to the values and principles that ruled the hearts of Cretans.

This novel demonstrates what life was like for Cretan Greeks under Turkish occupation in the mid 19th century. Kazantzakis creates larger than life characters such as Capitan Michalis and Emine. A bit long but worth the effort.

No onerecommends it for: Kazantzakis fans and those who enjoy historical fiction
A good description of Greeks versus Turks, but not as strong as The Greek Passion.

I'm so glad I wasn't born during this time. The poor women had it rough!
