Originally read Mar 2011:
I think I feel a little dirty after reading this! That's not to say I didn't enjoy it...it was just a little...unexpected. Lora Leigh is a naughty NAUGHTY writer who can sometimes really hit the spot with me, but other times she shocks me and leaves me a little speechless.

I can only conclude by saying that I have already bought the next two in the series...make what you will of that!

Update - re-read Dec 2011

Tempting The Beast starts out with Merinus Tyler arguing with her testosterone loaded male family members that she is capable of tracking down Callan Lyons, a genetically modified male who could become the investigative story of the century. She argues that as a woman she can get Callan to talk to her. Understandably, her brothers and father are not excited by her logic. However, Merinus has been half in lust with Callan since the moment she saw his photo and can't deny this inexplicable pull to...more

So many people have raved about the Breeds series and Lora Leigh's writing in general that I finally had to try it out. In many ways, I can certainly see why fans enjoy these so much. I thought the premise was very creative and unique, something I've never seen in a romance novel before. I kept thinking as I read it that this is the stuff that great sci-fi movies are made of. It definitely held my attention, but I found myself wishing the author would tell me more about the Breeds and their back...more

This book was better than I'd expected. I really liked the story around the Breeds "creation" - it was a bit out there sometimes but, hey, it's PNR so not everything has to make complete sense, right? LOL

As for the very steamy sex scenes, the barb thing was too weird for me, but I somehow managed to "erase" it from my mind... I think.

Even though I've only read this one book so far, I feel I'm going to become addicted to this series. I just have got to know what's going to happen with all the Bre...more

I made it to 30% before giving up. this book is too gross for me. the frothing, creamy, honey, "cunt" juices were just too much for me since the plot/characters were also boring me into a coma.

Yes I'm gay so that might influence my opinion a little:

- is quite possibly the most horrible, degradable word to describe the female anatomy in the english language. I refuse to use the word. So you can imagine my jaw drop when I stumble across the word in almost every other paragraph in this book.

So, moving on. This is the first book in the breed series. And after so many great reviews I could hardly contain my excitement when I started reading.

I have to agree that the story has ALOT of potential.

We have Callen. A human cross breed...more

I really wanted to like this series. But it is not for me. I need something more than sex to like a book. It was like reading the same thing over and over again. The things that were happening felt like added just to have something more than sex in it.

There was not a real conection between the characters. And it is not that I don't like strong and very possesive males. I do. And I love it when the male feels this strong conection with the girl without even having talk to her. But in this book th...more

OMG! I really enjoyed this book! Not only did the author spin an interesting world for the characters, but the chemistry between the them was hot to say the least. Loved it!

3.5 stars. Better than I thought it would be, initially. Will write up a full review later. I read this for the SuperWendy TBR challenge "Steamy Read" and it fit the bill nicely.

When I put this series on my TBR list I didn't realize that it started out as erotica. Not that I have a problem with erotica; I am a huge perv after all. I just wasn't prepared for the level of hotness. Then I checked the book out from the library (yes they had erotica at my library) and realized that it was an Ellora's Cave book. I knew then that I would probably really like the book cause again, I am a perv and this is smutty paranormal goodness. Holy frakkin hotness, Batman!! This book was s...more

I'm a big fan of Lora Leigh's books but this particular series was at first difficult to get into.
I first read this book last year and didn't quite like it, maybe because it was distanced from the usual plot line that I usually read.

After reading some other books in this series, and finding them absolutely fantastatic, I've gone back to this one for a new perspective on Callans Lyons and Merinus story.

I'm not going to go over the storyline but what my perspective tells me is that there has to be...more

Tempting the Beast is a lesson in how not to write romance or a book in general. Editors do an important job and I wish a good one had worked on this, heavily.

Me reading this book:

Heroine pushes her naive deeply stupid agenda
*wince at poor use of language*
sex
hero whines
*rolls eyes*
sex
*wince again*
heroine whines
sex
more whining
*more eye rolling*
heroine stubbornly (and stupidly) she believes she is right
more sex
a rare moment: non-sexual action
spoke too soon, more sex
"I love you" - *wince*

Tempting The Beast is H.O.T.

Callon Lyons, the hero, is indeed "uber" Alpha (his genes were spliced with a lion, of course he's alpha,) and I was hooked from the beginning scene.

Merinus, the heroine, is an excellent match for Callon's overbearing ways, and finds ways of asserting her independence with a man who needs to be dominant. But in the end, it's her willingness to compromise that prooves her love for him. Surprisingly, I found the domninant/submissive thing to be the undelying texture to...more

I had great expectations for the Breeds series. I thought the story line had great potential and that it would be right up my alley.

However, it was a little too much sex and not enough storyline for me.
Don't get me wrong, i like a good sex scene as much as the next person, i was just disappointed that Lora Leigh didn't elaborate on the story as much as i thought possible.

***NOTE: I wrote this review a LONG time ago - and it was my first erotica read....Lora Leigh, isn't the sort of author to po...more

Take my advice and start with the first book in the Breed series. It’s a deliciously yummy romance. Tempting the Beast is more like a short story that serves to introduce the reader to the breed community. Human, infused with DNA from predators of the world, Breeds were created to serve as secret operatives, assassins and killing machines. The hero in this first book, Callan Lyons, is one of these genetic experiments and one of the initial six lion Breeds we meet fighting for their freedom.

So obviously this is erotica, and I realize erotica is pretty subjective and hard to grade. But to me, this was just bad.

The premise was actually somewhat promising. Callan is one of several genetically manipulated humans--he has lion DNA in his genome--who are all part of some top secret highly unethical experiment. Merinus is a journalist who is eager to expose what was done to Callan and his fellow "Breeds", and requires his cooperation. They meet, sparks fly in a big way, and we find out tha...more

Well…the cover of this book looked smutty and reading the synopsis on the book didn’t change my mind any. I was told by others that read it that it really wasn’t—they lied or forgot or something!! This book was competing at the Smut Olympics. Now don’t get me wrong, I think smut definitely has its place and I don’t mind reading some from time to time. But I like my smut to have at least 40-50...more

This is the first Lora Leigh book that I read and I was pleasantly surprised by Tempting the Beast. Merinus is on the hunt for a story and Callan is it, Callan is a man with Feline DNA and Merinus thinks that it is time for him to come out to the world. Callan and his pride have hidden and know that there are many dangers and Callan takes it on himself to lead and protect his family. But Merinus calls to him and Callan to Merinus. Then the Mating frenzy between the two begin and there is no stop...more

Callan Lyons is a human genetic hybrid experiment but that did not take away his hotness and he was really really hot. This is one naughty read and Ms. Lora Leigh is a naughty writer. I am not all impress with his mate though Merinus Tyler, who is a journalist an annoying one at that. She is always throwing around that her 7 kickass older brothers will come out to kick his ass when she finds herself out of depth with this latest assignment that she insisted she can handle. Really woman at times...more

Um...well...what to say...

The most you can give a book here is five stars so I've gotten to the point I give each star for a specific reason...or don't give it in some cases.

The first star that this book earned is the idea/plot behind it, which I loved. Secret group of people doing DNA experimentation leads to a new species human/animal hybrids, who escape and try to live hidden away but can't quite shake the bad guys. It's just a interesting idea and with the way this book ended makes me wonder...more

It was okay. I like the author so I gave the series a try.
The premise of the book is about a genitally engineered breed of people who are part wild feline and a person for the purpose of creating a private military. They escape the laboratories where they were being abused to try to find a life for themselves. The book centers around 3 groups of people, the feline half breeds, the group that is trying to hunt them to capture them to put them back in the labs and a family who is trying to help p...more

Aside from teh fact that our hero is a result of a genetic experiment mixing DNA's of lion and human, or at least that was i was showed to understand; this is pretty much like every erotica novel i have read in the past.

Well, aside from barb thingy that is actually gross and I am now trying to erase from my mind, it was hot, intense, and good.

Our heroine is a journalist trying to end the COUNCIL'S experiment, Kane is the pack leader; group of seven people all with beast's DNA on their system an...more

Oh Jeez, What to say, What to say.
I'll start off with the good I suppose.
While this book had a bit more character interaction than actual plot movement, I loved the dynamic between the main characters Callan and Merinus. At first I was kind of put off at the idea that she had fallen so quickly and senselessly into this "mating frenzy" but then ofcourse, it was an animalistic need and those kinds of things rarely happen over grand periods of time. On the negative side of things, I wish I knew m...more

I am very disappointed with this. the language is distasteful. The characters are as deep as a teaspoon. The story line is pretty much non existent. It isn't that I don't like the sex scenes....but by the time I was halfway through...no not even....maybe a quarter of the way through I was so bored with the whole thing. As the old saying goes quality over quantity... and this book has bombed on quality. Some sexy novels really make you catch your breath but I found myself only reading further for...more

I am a big fan of shapeshifter love, but this story was just alright for me. To tell the truth, I'm getting sick and tired of the whole human-animal storyline that seems to haunt me at every turn.

Merinus (oh my god, what did she do to deserve such a terrible name?) is a human reporter and the younger sister of seven brothers, whom she often uses as a means to threaten the hero Callan. Anyway, Merinus seems to be bipolar or perhaps has multiple personalities as she is all over the place. One minu...more

This story has definite potential, i don't mind the sex at all but reading it I couldn't shake the feeling that it has been narrated by a gynecologist from hell.

Every few pages i had to refrain myself from having a mad dash for the sanitizing wipes to clean my e-reader. I am a woman, and I don't mind all the colorful names that can be used to describe our ever-glorious bits but what I found to be the most lacking in this story was the crudeness in witch the beastly mind-blowing sex was describe...more

Lora Leigh lives in the rolling hills of Kentucky, often found absorbing the ambience of this peaceful setting. She dreams in bright, vivid images of the characters intent on taking over her writing life, and fights a constant battle to put them on the hard drive of her computer before they can disappear as fast as they appeared. Lora’s family, and her writing life co-exist, if not in harmony, in...more
