First and foremost, I thoroughly enjoyed this fine book. Ruy Castro has a sly and subtle sense of humor that had me laughing along. He also has the pacing of a master story teller. Mostly he allows the reader to follow him as he traces the movement major players in Bossa Nova -- Joao Gilberto, Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Sylvia Telles, Nara Leao, and a large cast of middle and minor players as well. Sometimes he follows in great detail the emergence of specific songs -- chega de saudade, desa...more

Dishy tale of the incestuous Rio de Janeiro jazz scene that brought Bossa Nova softly into the world. Wry Brazilian journalist Castro tells the story of how Joao Gilberto, a boorish Bahian singer, becomes a neurotic genius who changes the world. He also paints a memorable picture of how Gilberto's beat (the tricky syncopated guitar strum on which the Bossa Nova sound is built) reverberates across Copacabana, then Rio, then Brazil, then the world. Heart on his sleeve and tongue in his cheek, Cast...more

Very detailed history of Bossa Nova from a Brazilian journalist. Made me want to listen to tons of the more obscure records mentioned.

I really did not like this book. I was assigned to read it for my Latin American culture class. I just didn't understand the logical flow of the book. One minute it talked about the Sinatra-Farney fan club then it began talking about a local radio station without any real transition. One other person in my class said it makes sense if you follow the music rather than the storyline. That didn't work for me. I just don't get it.

Very interesting book on the background and development of bossa nova, mainly following the early career of the great Joao Gilberto. Although the exposition and background provided is excellent, the book does presuppose a bit of familiarity with the musicians involved.

I'm using this as a source for my senior essay on Bossa Nova, and so far I'm loving it. It's got all the information I need, but the writing isn't labored and keeps you interested.
