Tryon, having made the most of his rural childhood memories for the settings of his first three novels, looks to his past career as a Hollywood actor for inspiration. He had already moved away from horror with Lady and touched on modern issues in a past setting there, so Crowned Heads is a natural progression for him.

Since it's publication in 1976, I've read 'Crowned Heads' at least six times. Thomas Tryon was a bit actor known mostly for his role in 'I Married A Monster From Outer Space'. In the early 70's his first novel, 'The Other' was a best-selling horror tale.

I remember reading this book in college, late into the night, and jumping with surprise in a few places where the author totally tricked me. Fun read.

It was Noel Coward’s partner, Gertrude Lawrence, who encouraged Tom to try acting.
