Jacob Aitken
The book is a handy reference despite one's outlook in this area. He attempted the impossible and nearly succeeded. I agree with others that he should have incorporated other scholars to help. Here are the faults that I have with the book: He intends to view most major theologians of the past as *classical* in outlook, Calvin being the major example. Even more ironic is the fact that given his (Geisler) "cold neutrality" towards the Reformed faith, he warmly reivewed Reformed scholars ...more

For one who has many objections to the Christian faith but is willing to examine intelligent and quite rational explanations for the veracity of Christianity, its central figure-- Jesus the Christ, and its holy book-- the Bible, I recommend you begin with an article or two. I havn't read this prodigious book completely but I have read a lot of it. It is a great resource for Christians to have, no doubt, but I think Geisler took on too much here. The newer IVP Apologetics Encyclopedia is probably a stronger book because of the contributions by a varitey of experts in each of the areas that were written about. Dry (but it is an encyclopedia)...but a good reference for overview on various issues in philosophy and Christian apologetics. For more of a flowing read I would recommend his classic "Christian Apologetics" which is written at a seminarian/grad student level.

Great reference book of thinkers and their thoughts. Contains the naysayers as well as the defenders. Readers should know beforehand that Geisler freely inserts his own critiques and positions.

Good breadth and sometimes good depth...but I have definitely picked this book up a lot and although an encyclopedia, have read it cover to cover.
Chuck Bonadies
Not my favorite book on apologetic, but a good reference work.

Though I have not read every entry, this a great reference work for the apologist's library. Though a very comprehensive tome, it's probably too much for one person to cover this much material and be thorough.
