WOW, what an amazing book...psychological twists and everything you can imagine. I had more nightmares about past life experiences while reading this book then I have for a long time...what a tangled web we weave sometimes in our lives.

With predators, sometimes in out lives, we women who are in these situations learn to become "very smart, shrewd, and wily about protecting outselves" as stated by Patrick near the end of the book. What he was learning about the two main pr...more

Nine years ago Mara Jameson vanished. She was pregnant at the time and she became a sad statistic--missing. Now, nine years later Lily Malone and her daughter Rose are making a life for themselves in a small coastal town in Canada. Lily has formed a close bond with several women who meet at her needlework shop. Rose has met a new friend and her mother seems very reserved and secretive. When Rose's chronic health problem requires her to have surgery, the whole town steps in to help--espec...more

The only thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is the fact that I have to read the sequel to learn the rest of the story. I don't mind that if I know before I start the book that I need to read another book to finish the story.

I loved Rice's characters and how she developed them. I was able to predict some parts, but not all. Her characters seemed so real. I wanted to send my copy to the woman who is engaged to Drew Peterson so she could open her eyes.

This was the second time I read this book. I had forgotten how poorly it ends. Too many loose ends, so I have to cry FOUL. Has all the ingredients of a great story. Heart tugging nine year old with heart condition, single mom on the run from an abusive spouse. I had a hard time buying into the concept of the whale following the girl up the shore to the hospital for surgery and then "leading" them back to the grandmother's home. I can usually buy most things, just don't know that ...more

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it was better written than the last two books I read -- Home Fires and Everything that Matters. Luckily, I knew that this was only part 1 of the story, otherwise I would have been sorely disappointed at the ending. I don't need everything tied up in neat little packages, but this book left way too many dangling storylines to be considered a stand-alone novel. I have started Summer of Roses and was very impressed with the prologue.

This was my first Luanne Rice book, but it certainly will not be my last. I have already gone to the library and took out the book that joins this - called Summer of Roses.

I loved this book so much that I went to my computer and looked up everything about Nova Scotia. Luanne Rice writes about people and places like they are real and you don't want the book to end. I want to go to Nova Scotia now and go on a whale watching cruise and learn everything about whales.

Lily Malone lives in Nova Scotia with her daughter Rose. She hides a dark past, which moves back into the present as she struggles to help her daughter with the numerous surgeries she must go through. Rose was born with multiple heart defects. It's a heart-tugging book with mystery and romance that faces difficult issues including abuse and relationships.

Luanne Rice never failed to impress me yet. Even though this book was "spoiled" when I was reading this because I already knew the twist because I first bought Summer of Roses before this, not knowing that Summer of Roses is the sequel to Summer's Child.
I really like it, and I like Edward Hunter's character.

There are so many levels to both this book and it's companion in Summer of Roses. It had all the elements
I love most! Mystery, Love, Smart, Fun and Personal. If that makes sense! Both books together are less than 500 pages. You won't be disappointed! Personally I love the "Women Warriors" theme! You will too!

Summer's Child is an easy read--no grisly murders--but still life's struggles with health issues, marriages, loss of loved ones, & mystery. I enjoyed reading it. Just a good way to pass the time, not gripping like some I have read which I also enjoy.

As far as I can remember, this was my first reading of a Luanne Rice book. Abrupt must be the order of the week since this book, too, ended suddenly and with a predictable, unsatisfying, ending. I choose it as a "quick summer read" but I had to force myself to feel anything for the characters and the plot didn't really interest me. I read it in a few short days, waiting for the story to improve, which, in my opinion, it never did.

How people can develop the support and love to overcome great odds even when they have been beaten down and almost lost the ability to trust. However, the coincidences in this book were a bit much for me to swallow.

I thought this would be an easy vacation read. lucky for me I brought several vacation reads because this book is pathetic. I gave it 80 pages and happily returned it to the library.

I don' expect Rice to become a favorite author of mine, but she makes me want to read the continuing on of these characters and she really made me miss the ocean.

This was a light, enjoyable read. I liked most of the characters and could certainly relate to the aspects of abusive first husbands. I would have given it four stars, but it ended on a cliffhanger which irritates me. It feels like a ploy to get you to buy the next one, not because you enjoyed it and want more, but because the story is incomplete. Luckily the library has plenty of copies of the next one.

This was an interesting book. There were a couple of twists that kept it from being just another romance. I want to read the sequel.

Really liked the somewhat disguised "sisterhood" among the central characters. Also never saw the twist coming at the end. Good story!!

I really like the story. The bad guy has bad language, but it was effective in helping me hate the enemy. It has a mystery, a litle predictable, but still a nice sweet ending.
